Woman takes legal action against YouTube user
A New York woman has begun preparations for a lawsuit against a web user who anonymously called her a "whore" on YouTube.
Carla Franklin claims to have "suffered damages in the form of distress and mental anguish" from the posting, the New York Post reports.
The Columbia business school graduate wants a judge to give her a court order to force YouTube to divulge the poster’s true identity.
A statement submitted to the Manhattan Supreme Court said the post was made "with the intention to harm Ms Franklin’s reputation and interfere with her relationships, employment and livelihood".
Her lawyer, David Fish, told the newspaper the post has made her "very upset".
"People feel bolder and bolder that they can say whatever they want when they post things with anonymity, but there can be consequences," he said.
"If you’re going to post something about somebody, you need to stand by it. It’s cowardly insulting people without justification."
The single-word slur was posted on a YouTube video Ms Franklin recorded during her time at business school.
Mr Fish told the New York Post that he and his client had a "fairly good idea who was doing this".
YouTube, which is owned by Google, has turned over IP addresses and identifying information in the past when requested through a court order.
