Perhaps it would be worthwhile to the reader to summarize my 4 years on TF. I live in California. After a 16-year marriage and being divorced for another 4 years, in 2006 I felt it was time to begin anew. A friend of mine had been recommending TF to me for over a year, but I didn't feel like I wanted to explore a relationship, and frankly an internet site seemed just plain weird. After joining in February 2006, not much happened in the first month. I didn't comment on a journal, I didn't vote much. But after a while I started commenting, voting and chatting with a few women. I met one good friend; she is no longer a member-- she is now married to a very nice man she met here on TF and subsequently moved to live in the Netherlands. I then had a brief relationship with someone who also is no longer a member.*

And then a magical thing happened on August 4, 2006. A very young woman contacted ME. It was an exceedingly shy and polite friendship at first, but after the first few months we were chatting weekly, then daily, then twice daily, and at one point we were talking 20 hours per weekend, and as the months went by the friendship changed. Don't ask me why. We met in December 06 in BKK with the intention of seeing each other for part of a day, but it didn't work out that way. We spent the entire time together. On New Year's Eve, about five o'clock we got her a ring. The fact a small hand-held explosive device detonated some 500 meters down the street did not deter us. We had a truly miserable New Year's Eve dinner at the Dusit Thani, but that's ok, 'cause we were in love.

In January-March 2007 we continued the long-distance communication and met again at the end of March 2007, this time meeting family and friends for a few engagement celebrations. We were together next for 23 days in June-July 2007, for 16 days in Bangkok and Chiang Mai iin September-October 2007, for 23 days in December-January 2008, during which time we also visited Hong Kong, 4 days in March 2008, 4 days in May 2008, 15 days in June-July 2008, 4 days in August-September 2008. Finally on November 17, 2008, she had her interview at the Bangkok Embassy and got her K-1 fiancee visa. She arrived on January 7, a week after I moved into a 4-storey townhouse 2km from my office. On March 2, we picked up the marriage license in Beverly Hills (and had to hurry back for Jan's English class!). We got married on March 7, 2009, at the Thai Wat in North Hollywood, California, with nine monks and 45 friends in attendance, and afterwards celebrated at my friends Andy & Mina's Mexican restaurant, the Talpa, in West Los Angeles. On August 12, 2009, at 4AM (BKK time) Jandevil was approved for her conditional Permanent Resident Alien status at the Federal building in downtown Los Angeles...

We are still a work in progress. We have a few significant issues to deal with. Often I will say something that means one thing in my culture, and something entirely different in hers. But we also have a commitment and a growing trust. We'll keep you informed of our development. I can already tell you I've never met a more noble, intelligent, kind and beautiful person.

Among the many things to admire about Jandevil is that she took care of herself, on her own, ever since she was a tiny little girl, without parental support of any kind. She was (and is!) brilliant, industrious and persevering, and she earned the best governmental scholarships to attend a preparatory school, college (where she majored in biology and published her senior thesis in a science journal), and graduate school (studying physiology). She is a completely self-made woman. By comparison, my little journey from the streets of Tijuana to Yale and Stanford was but a walk in the park. . .

I do have a little advice for the guys: Wait for her to find you. Become friends first. Recognize you will not understand everything (indeed, sometimes hardly anything!). Read up on cultural differences. Have patience. Don't be rash, but don't be afraid to take risks. There may even come a time when you might find out something that will absolutely crush you and make you think initially that you simply cannot go forward: This is Thailand, not Kansas City-- what happened in the past did not involve you (I know, I know, easier said than done!) -- Do yourself a favor and get over it! And be ready for the ride of your life. If you fall off the Thai friendship rollercoaster, pick yourself up and try again.
