"VENGEFUL GERMAN GOES ON ARSON RAMPAGE IN PATTAYA AND BANGKOK

After allegedly being ripped off by Pattaya bar-girls, and bilked by miserly phone booths, a German tourist went on the rampage torching 11 public phone booths in Pattaya, recently. Bangkok police also suspect that he may have been involved in setting fire to numerous advertising billboards at bus stops in Bangkok as well and consider they will need another 3 weeks before they are certain.

Heinz-Dieter Beckers, 64, was apparently extremely angered by losing all his money to unscrupulous bar-girls in Pattaya, and his cash card to an ATM, which was reluctant to return his card when he tried to reclaim it after his failure to obtain cash, leaving him penniless. However, he became totally incensed when 11 miserly phone boxes which he had attempted to rob, likewise refused to disburse cash that he that he apparently felt he had little recourse but to set fire to them.

The German, a frequent visitor to Thailand, who on this occasion had overstayed his visa, was arrested by Bangkok police on Monday, March 16, and confessed to having torched at least 11 phone booths as well as 3 advertising billboards at Bangkok bus stops; the latter due, he said ,to having been rejected by homeless people who were reluctant to share a night with him.

However, Bangkok police suspect the number of bus stop billboard attacks by Beckers could be well higher, as at least 23 have been the subject of arson attacks in the past two weeks. Another source at Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, however, believes that someone involved in a commercial dispute between J.C. Decaux Co, which was awarded the contract to run advertising at the damaged BMA bus stops, and its rivals could have been responsible for the mass arson attacks on bus stops. Police say it may take another 3 weeks to find the truth."

The German guy was arrested over a week ago seemed like a really sad character if he was fighting with homeless people over bus shelter sleeping space. Sounds like he may be a fall guy as the commercial dispute seems more likely with the bus shelter ads.
