PM Abhisit Vejjajiva launched a new website, http://www.ilovethailand.org, and called it an online social site which promotes national unity; "What will you do to love your country?" the site asks, indicating that posting photos, chatting and sending SMS messages is a good way, because the activities will always be under watchful eyes.

The term ?nationalism? is generally used to describe two phenomena: (1) the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity and (2) the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to achieve (or sustain) self-determination. (1) raises questions about the concept of nation (or national identity), which is often defined in terms of common origin, ethnicity, or cultural ties, and while an individual?s membership in a nation is often regarded as involuntary, it is sometimes regarded as voluntary. (2) raises questions about whether self-determination must be understood as involving having full statehood with complete authority over domestic and international affairs, or whether something less is required

I think it is the actions you take and the attitude you express that determines whether nationalism is good or bad. You can be proud of your culture and your national identity without expressing negativitiy toward others of different nationalities who reside in your country, or you can use that 'national identity' to express racist sentiments.

There are 2 great examples here in the UK; The Scottish National Party (of which I am a member) who campaign as any other political party, but with an express aim of returning independence to Scotland. But they have no racist sentiments; no ideas of repatriating English (or other nationalities) once this is achieved.

Then there is the British National Party; a collection of racist thugs who now masquerade as legitimate politicians, but who put the well being of those of Anglo-Saxon, Celtic and Norse descent above all others. Who have, until recently, openly advocated repatriation of 'immigrants', even if those 'immigrants' are now into their 3rd generation.

Nationalism is a question of self interpretation. It depends very much on how you personally interpret the definitions given by the Stanford site.

Nationalism is petty and used to divide people in the same vein religion does. It stops us from looking at the things we have in common and tackling the issues we are facing that don't exactly stop at borders.

Btw, because of some video on this website stirring things up regarding the border dispute in the Preah Vihear area the Cambodian government has complaint to the Thai government to remove the video. The site is now blocked and inaccessible from within Cambodia.

But hey, nationalism really moves things forward. :roll:
