Great Firewall of China

Its my first week in China and I’m already having trouble with the powers that be. Facebook is blocked by the Great Firewall of China. No more trouncing my non-journalist (and journalist) friends in Scrabulous. No pithy status updates. Its true that I have found proxy servers that let me use some of the Facebook features, so I continue the soft surveillance of my friends and see new photos of my little cousin. But still, this is an annoyance.

Leaving for Beijing

It's been wonderful to spend nearly a month in Canada and the United States, touching base with my family, my friends and my roots before heading off to China on Friday.Bangkok seems very far away. Some emails with some friends are the only concrete reminders. I am getting used to the cold, and the high prices.I visited New York, which is still an astonishing city to be in. It is beautiful, vibrant, rich, and full of life. Also, multiculturalism is HOT.My sister asked me if I missed the vibrant

Burning man canceled

Not the event, but the trip. My dad has to work. I could go alone, but the entire point was to spend time with him. Toronto is always changing, but the changes are easier to see after being away for some long. The women here have their own fashion, a kind of thrift shop possibly ironic fifties suburban housewife look. Partly because it looks good even if you are a little not-skinny.This is a great city, but each day reminds me of the two most basic, primal things that Thailand offers: warm weath

Planning a trip to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert with my father. May take weekend road trip to NYC. After taking 12 hour bus trips to Krabi to climb for the weekend, a 36 hour drive for a week of camping and partying seems like an ok deal. Burning Man makes the Full Moon Parties look like high tea.

In Orillia

My visa for China has been delayed. My new supposed employer is being quite vague about the details. I'm in my hometown and its very cold. My father started a fire in the fireplace. Just visited my grandmother. Although we are supposedly a more advanced society, it breaks my heart to see her living in a home away from her family, just waiting out her last days. It is breaking her heart too. Not that I blame anyone. For example, you dont see me dropping everything to take care of her. But still t

I've left Bangkok and am at my sister's house to visit my new nephew. I was afraid he would cry the moment I held him, but instead he loves me and is always happy to spend time with me and play with me. It feels great to be back in my own culture, although the weather takes some getting used to. I grew accustomed to the heat. I ate some delicious peaches today. The local park is run by young parents who are installing a biodegradable toilet. It has an adobe firepit with a pizza oven that familie

In Seattle

I'm back in the US after 2.5 years. I did not imagine how good it would feel to be back in my own culture and among friends.I also forgot how cold it is here and how expensive everything is.What a big and complicated world we live in, full of miracle, like traveling 7500 miles in one day.

Bye bye cat and guitar

I just let go of two of my most valuable possessions, my Ibanez guitar and my cat, although I always thought of myself as my cat's advocate or guardian rather than her owner.I have less than two days in Thailand, and my life has sped up to an incredible speed in a country where the days (or at least people) have always moved so slowly and regularly.I still have six Thai lessons (90 minutes, given at your home or office), and an 18 speed bicycle to get rid of, along with things like towels, beddi

Speak Thai -- Here's how! Stuff for sale.

I have a package of 6 Thai lessons with Jentana and Associates http://www.thai-lessons.com/school.htm that I would like to transfer to someone before I leave. The lessons include the teacher coming to your place of business or home, assuming you live or work along Silom or Sukhumvit. If you are further out, you may have to negotiate an additional transportation fee. I'm thinking 2100 baht is a real deal. Text me at 0898166290 if you are interested. Still trying to sell a professional turntable w

I just found a loving home for my cat, and most of my stuff has been dispatched with.I hope everyone in this online community is aware of what a special place it is and how powerful the evergy is here that can be harnassed. It makes me feel good to see the charity events. But it also makes me feel good that so many interesting people who would have never met otherwise are getting together and having fun.I've had a blast here on TF. This is not my last post.

Ghosts and Sex --> What haunts you

As I reflect on my time here is Thailand before I leave, one of the most striking things is how much Thai people believe in ghosts. From children to elderly, from the uneducated to the university professors, everyone thinks about them. Even Thai people who rationally acknowledge that they don't exist still get frightened sometimes and have to talk themselves out of it.Another striking thing about Thailand in the different attitude toward sex.It seems to me the Thais have a fairly natural attitud

Contest: Winning sex positions

Mallard won! The 64 arts or skills of my clues were 64 things a woman needed to cultivate to be a good lover, according to the Kama Sutra. They also correspond to the 64 sexual positions in the Kama Sutra, portrayed here. How many have you tried?
