Yup. Metered taxis out of airport, back you have to find some other way (stupid mafia). The distance is long. And those are the only metered taxis you are gonna see. When you get to the airport, as normal in Thai airports, walk past the first row of "limousines" and see in the distance the taxi stands.

You have "easy case" when you are going just to Patong..:)

My taxi driver tried to screw me over during the trip couple of times when I got to Karon. :( I say you: it got scary at one point, this metered taxi ride, that I was thinkin to say "Stop now, let me out"...At one point he stopped by the road side and was tryin to take two women to "help me and him find free hotel because my hotel is full and he also doesn't really now where the hotel is"! I had already taken the taxi number on paper...crazy thing is that they give out to every customer a customer satisfaction form...:) I definetly filled ready. :)

Middle of Karon Beach was 600 baht (near Phuket Orchid Resort).

I can help you arrange a ride for 500 baht to the driver, a friend of mine. no hassle, no bullshit about stopping at a tour agency to sign his "log book" or ask for directions while the tour guide delays you for an hour trying to sell you a tour package. let me know if you want to use this guy.

even when u insist that the taxi driver take you directly to the hotel he insists on making this stop or needs to get gas. WTF, what is a taxi doing waiting for fares when his tank is on empty? agggghhhhh.

Thanks Dave and Sunsnow for the tips, I suspect it was something like Samui where you haggle for the price but was not sure.

Dave, I will catch up with ya this weekend and we can chat more about the attraction of Phuket.

Thanks Ron, let me get back to ya about the "driver", it will be great not to have a driver trying to take me to the cleaners.... however, at this stage, I am still at the early phase of planning....still doing research on Phuket and other destinations...in any case, I appreciate your offer to help....I will PM you later....and if you happen to be in Bkk, lets get together and have a few beers, buddy.

This is one reason to avoid Phuket like the plague.

There are certain places in Thailand where you are certain to be ripped off at every opportunity.
