Just curious if anyone knows the best and cheapest way to get to Samui from Bangkok? I checked Airasia but didn't see any airport listed for Samui.  Always wanted to go there so I am trying to book now before I get there in August.

heard its cheaper overland by bus then boat to the island but could be wrong and depends on time schedule whether its worth the time it takes.

when i went i just got a flight at the airport at bkk without booking it but this was in low season so it may not be worth doing that. cant remember what airline I took sorry

Thai Airways has started flying to Koh Samui also. But I don't think they're any cheaper than Bangkok Airways. Flying is an expensive option for Koh Samui and not worth it in my opinion. There have already been some suggestions about bus/van to Surai Thani and you can also take the train, likewise slow.

I've been to Koh Samui once and didn't really like it. Overdeveloped and the island's "nature" has been replaced by coconut plantations. I far prefer Koh Chang!

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions to get to Samui. I will check out the airline prices now. I only wanted to go for the weekend so taking the bus might take too long. Any how thanks again to everyone. Have a great weekend!

I wouldn't recommend flying to surat thani. its only 2 hr flight but once you get to surat thani it will take you about 7 hours to get to samui since the airport is well over 100 km from ferry. Just take overnight bus and first boat in morning. Its only around 1,000 baht bus and boat.

Better late than never, besides I gotta help out a fellow Greg:

I've been to Samui 3 times:

First time I went to Samui it was by overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, Arrive at Surat Thani in the morning and take a coach from the train station to ferry pier, the ferry takes about an hour and a half to Samui. Train takes about 11 hours. More info and train times available here: http://www.seat61.com/Thailand.htm#Ko%20Samui

It was a good experience travelling my train, met some people on the train and shared travel experiences, if I flew I would never have had that opportunity to meet people.

Bangkok airways has a monopoly on flights to Samui, I beleive they own the airport in Samui and they tend to be expensive, flights are frequent though and takes about an hour from Bangkok to Samui.

ur guys so wrong wrong wrong ... :)

the cheapest way to get samui is take the train ( cheapest ticket train ok not the one with the bed )

and then when you arrive to surat trainstation you better looking for bus station ( the public one not the one tht catching tourism you know ) take the bus to go to ferry .. this is the ******* cheapest way to get to samui ( beside walk or swim ok )

i did try it out already .. and **** i never do it again !!!
