Bangkok bombed by America!

Well, it's actually true! During World War II Thailand was occupied by the Japanese and as a consequence, America at that time considered Thailand to be an ally of Japan.

So American bombers needed some target practice before flying to Japan to do bombing runs, and Bangkok was chosen as the target.

The Americans were "polite" enough not to bomb near any royal residences or historic places but Bangkok was, nonetheless, bombed and yes property was destroyed and people died.

Almost no Americans know this fact and likewise, most Thai people are astonished to know this. But ask your grandparents and I'll bet they remember very well!

If you don't believe any of this, Google it! It is, sadly, fact!

Though it happened a long time ago, my apologies to Thai people for what happened then!

sushi_romance: Yes, Americans are polite even during war.

Hollywood_bkk: I'm surprised!

thanapawn: But did you knkow this before?

ohioalex: Strange. I've never met any American who knew about it!

chowny: Uhhhhh...not exactly!

Thailand was occupied by the Japanese there were military targets and bombing missions throughout the country. It wasn't like the Allies used Bangkok as practice as you said. It was a war not a dinner party.

There is absolutely nothing to apologize for.

WanderingKev: Well I, for one, feel ashamed that the Americans bombed Bangkok and an apology is appropriate, even if I was far too young to have been involved.

alexbkk: Don't forget that when this happened there was a Democrat in the White House. Not George Bush!

Many awful things happen in the name of war, many people die for a reason that we believe is right........but what about the things that were wrong? Forgive, but never forget.........

This hardly comes as a surprise, considering that the US of good old A, has ALWAYS shown that it shoots / bombs before it thinks.

Take the 1999 bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The Americans classed it as 'Nato Bombings'

When, however, a successful British (for example) bombing takes place in, oh, let's say Baghdad, it's classed as a 'successful bombing by the American LED coalition forces.

ohioalex, do you know what interests are? americans (american govt. to be precise) don't give a rat's ass about others. Business comes first, that's one of the first things you get to learn about capitalism and americans were the pioneers in that. Democracy, well, I'd tend to argue on that. The only freedom one enjoys in america is being able to take everybody in court for pretty much anything and being free to eat all them hamburgers.

You're mentioning London and Hitler, well, now London is helping the USA, USA has the dosh and UK has the skills, the only bad thing is that brits are helping some kind of Hitler disguised in Bush, but with less brains. I'm romanian so I'm not taking sides here.

Please don't get me started, I have lots of american friends and I have nothing against people like you and me as long as they don't live under the impression that the USA is some kind of superhero trying to care about people and the rest of the world.

Sorry for getting off the topic guys. Yes they did bomb Thailand and if they'd do it again if they would need to.

Oh yes, if only the biliiant Brits were still the preeminent power instead of those barbarians the Americans, then the world would be all straightened out. A right perfect place, now. Seems you guys had a few hundres years in that role. Should we recount the many horrors and atrocities of your colonial rule? Oh, none of your (or substitute any nationality you like here) bombs ever went astray, none of your soliders ever killed an innocent civilian or one of his own in friendly fire. No, of course not, that wouldn't be cricket, would it?

Khun_Lung, why don't you ask the Thais to apologize for allowing 100,000 people to be murdered building the Death Railway through their country?

As they were allies of the Japanese, and this took place in Thailand, they bear responsibility.

France was not "bad" too in the colonies it had: Algeria, Vietnam (who began the war?)...

I have no respect for those who are able to begin a war for their power, nor for the ones who support them, what ever nation they are from.

Unfortunatly, any country with power has done it in its time; more power, more atrocity.

Loburt, what was the Death Railway built in the first place anyway? :) It all fires back to you, that's the way it always was and it will always be and americans are still not going to learn.

They've helped the muslims to defeat russians and tthan they got screwed over by their own allies. I have a quote in my profile, it's "A lie told often enough becomes the truth", americans believed the mujahideens bought it in really believin that americans were helping the afghans LOL americans were helping americans to defeat the russians with the mujahideen's hands and then the plan would go on by taking some (all) of their oil. It didn't worked out, the russians were gone and the americans were left to fight with the afghans. So much for the "americans actually do care of others" sh1t.

Vietnam was the same with the Ho Chi Minh's guerrillas, they've raised them to destroy the communists and then they've backfired. The only good thing coming out of that war were the hippies :)

Shall we speak about how many people were killed or had there life destroyed because they were considered communists. How many black people were killed and tortured just because they had a different colour. Americans done enough, wars, slavery, bombings, nuclear bombings too, not mentioning the slaughter on the american indians, a country created from murder. If I were an american citizen and somebody would mention about my history, I'd shut the f*ck up. No heroes there.

Alex,

Seems the Death Railway was built so the Japanese could more easily fight the British in Southeast Asia. Are you going to blame that on Americans too?

Viet Nam? No excusing American actions there. But shouldn't we also talk about the couple of hundred years of French colonialism? Shouldn't we mention the 20,000 Viet Namese who died working as slave labor on the Michelin plantations?

Shall we speak about the untold millions of people in Asia, Africa adn the Americas who were made slaves and slaiughtered by the British, French, or whatever strain of Eurotrash you are. And all the loot you guys stole from them too.

Slavery? The Brits and the French, and the Muslims, were all involved in the slave trade. As for the Afghans, they don't have much oil to speak of. The Americans didn't stay in Afghanistan after the Russians left. You don't have your facts straight, and you don't even appear capable of writing a sentence in English that makes sense.

Until you can, it's YOU who should shut the **** up.

I thought that the Kingdom has never been defeated in battle ever (So Thai people say)! So then how about the Japanese during the war! Many Thai's were forced to work on the River Kwai Project and Burma Railroad and ofcourse they were worked to death...

Did Japan push through Thailand or did Thailand side with the Japanese?

"Did Japan push through Thailand or did Thailand side with the Japanese?"

Both.

Gen. Pibul, the Thai leader of that time, issued a declaration of war against the United States. He wasn't forced to do that. But he thought the Japanese would win.

Seni Pramoj, the Thai ambassador in Washington, quietly refused to deliver it.

Nonetheless, with its declaration of war, the government in Bangkok considered itself at war with the United States.
