Nervous about travelling alone!

Hey everybody!Well, some may know, I will be going to Thailand in July, which I can't wait to do, although I'm actually really nervous about it as well. The thing is, I've been to Thailand before, but I have never travelled to another country alone, so this is a real first for me, which does kind of scare me. I will going to see someone, as you can gather from my profile, and even though it will be great spending time with her, I'm not really sure what I'll be doing while she's at work. Plus I'm a shy guy, so that doesn't really help me much in terms of going out alone in a foreign country, where I can't speak the language and I totally stand out.We have both already talked about this and she understands, but I was just wondering if any of you guys can relate to what I'm talking about here and perhaps have any advice or whatever. I went and bought a travel guide, which is a start, but I'm just a bit worried that I'm only going to want to go anywhere while she is with me, which is not how I want to spend my trip! It also doesn't help that I really don't know very many people over there! As I said, I've travelled plenty, but never alone, even once! I might be making too much of a big thing of it, but with only seven weeks to go, I wanted to post this and get some advice, or even perhaps if any of you might feel like meeting up for a few drinks or something while she's at work.Anyway, thanks for reading, guys, and hope to hear from you!Regards,Alex

Don't worry about it!

Get out and see the sights.

See if there are any bif TF partys going on while you are here.

PM a member or 3 and tell them your situation, that maybe you want to join, but don't know anyone personally, and might not be able to find the group.

I think any member would be more than happy to walk out and meet you close by, and walk you back into the party group of TFers.

JackyB - I don't know what I'm scared about. I suppose I'm just fearing it because it's an unfamiliar situation for me. I'm so used to following others rather than being in the situation of having to make my own decision. I've been to Bangkok before, but I don't know it all that well. I don't know the names of all the streets, which areas are more dangerous than others, etc.

I'm probably making this into a bigger deal than I need to, I guess I'm just fearing the unknown.

I traveled alone inThailand since i was 14 yrs and when i was 19 yrs i went alone to Cambodia.

Nothing to scare or worry if you go to tourist places and you carry mobile phone to call your girl incase of any problem.

I'm sure she will come to great you at the arrival gate on the first minute that your flight just arrive at the airport ;)

I travel a lot by myself. What I do to not get the feeling of being alone, and isolated, is to take pictures, a lot of pictures. It gives me a reason to go places alone, and I have something to share with my friends when I get back.

There are so many places to go, and things to see in Bangkok, and with a camera, you have something to share with your gf of what you did that day. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this can work in the reverse. Showing your gf the pictures give you a thousand words to talk about what you did that day.

I have also found that with my digital, when I take someones picture, and then show it to them, it makes them feel comfortable with me around, and the smiles, and laughs, get contagious.

When you get there, get a Nancy Chandler's map. It will give you so many ideas of what to do, and places to see, you won't get bored.

There is nowhere that is not safe in Bangkok, even if you don't know the street names.

On the other hand, everywhere is unsafe if you don't know the ropes, or keep on your toes.

I go where angels fear to tread, but I have also stepped on lots of broken glass, and have jumped out of many pans into the fire.

But I like it that way. ;-)

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your advice. I don't see the need for JackyB's sarcasm, as I feel this is a totally reasonable post, but whatever. Actually, I used to be on ThailandFriends ages ago, and I do remember some of the older ones, but same as now, I've never been a big poster on this site. There is actually an event on the day I arrive, which I might attend, if I am not too jetlagged! Thanks guys, for your help!

chockdee: If you want the truth...I carry two!

One for each hand

Using one, by the right man ( a Philippino or Indonesian knife fighter is deadly enough.....but when they get GOOD...they use 2)

(then it is time to run!!!!! VERY FAST!!!!)

unless you have a gun! :-D

***

I will be posting some serious training drills on knife fighting soon (clips)

Most people will NOT like them, but there are also some serious martial artists, fighters, military here on TF, that will apreciate them, and will be able to respect the skill that is needed to use a knife with SKILL.(not just a moron waving a knife in the air)

disclaimer: They are only to be used if your life is in danger.... ( I mean that!)

you will be very safe here..

the only thing to watch out for is people that "approach you" in tourist areas trying to seel you something, take you for a ride, sell you a suit, take you to a massage parlour.....

basic stuff...people just wanting to earn their living....but danger? not really.

part of traveling alone is an adventure in itself....then it is no more "follow the leader"

you will have a great time!
