Pope bewails 'scourge' of Thai prostitution

Pope Benedict XVI blamed sex in the media for the prostitution of women and children in Thailand, in comments Friday to bishops from the Southeast Asian nation that is seen as a hub of sex tourism.

"Of particular concern to you is the scourge of the trafficking of women and children, and prostitution. Undoubtedly poverty is a factor underlying these phenomena," the Roman Catholic pontiff told the visiting bishops.

"There is a further aspect which must be... collectively addressed if this abhorrent human exploitation is to be effectively confronted," he added: "The trivialization of sexuality in the media and entertainment industries."

This "fuels a decline in moral values and leads to the degradation of women, the weakening of fidelity in marriage and even the abuse of children".

Pope Benedict called for cooperation between different faiths in Thailand, where 95 percent of the population is Buddhist and Christians represent less than one percent -- including around 300,000 Catholics.

"I wish to express my appreciation for the efforts of the entire Catholic community of Thailand to uphold the dignity of every human life, especially the most vulnerable," he said.

Hmmm, what to say about this.

I agree that it is horrible to traffick in women and children. But the demand that generates that traffice should be addressed as well, not just the source.

I am certain that the Buddist monks in the country are trying to uphold the dignity of Thailand also.

with a tint of sarcasm, I must say that the Catholic church in America seems to have employed many clergy who are very experienced in sexual perversity, so maybe the Pope has some solid advice close at hand.

In 1970, Philippine population stood at about 37 million. So did Thailand?s. The twins? growth rate marched in lockstep at 3 percent per annum. Their economies muddled along in tandem.

Then they went their separate ways. Population policy facilitated Thailand?s ?demographic transition,? the process where fewer births mesh with lower death rates to slow population growth.

Come July, Thailand?s decelerating population will be 65.4 million, some international and US offices estimate. In contrast, Philippines population may exceed 92.6 million, given census under-reporting. The difference adds up to six Singapores.

WTF is that senile prick talking about?

This is what he spoke to Bishops of S/E region, I do not know what he said to bishops in German, do you? However, its interesting that he point out to Thailand while we're not the Christian country (or is that a reason?)so now what Thailand's representative will say..

yes, it would seem he might be far more useful considering the situation in the philippines that in thailand. but i suppose that would be very embarrassing in deed. population growth is out of control there most probably due to the policies of the church against birth control. well the catholicism of that country has done little or nothing to curb prostitution and rampant government corruption and it seems criminal mismanagement.
