A good day

Hi,

Well I just felt like writing, as I found out some great news today. Let me start a little ways back first. My mother has been having some problems for some time with her knee and hip, when it was further examined it was found that both were in bad shape and she would need a hip replacement as well as a knee replacement.

I arrived back in Canada from Thailand in late April of this year, and my mother was scheduled to have the surgery in May. The surgery was postponed several times, for different reasons. One of those reasons was she needed to strengthen the muscle in her leg first, part of her post-operation procedures. She ended up finally getting scheduled for Sept 5th. One week before the surgery my mother had some problems when urinating, so I told her to see the doctor right away. Unlucky she ended up with a bladder infection, and had to take pills to clear this up. If it was not cleared by the end of the week, then it would be once again postponed. Well she managed to get it cleared and the day of surgery arrived.

On this morning, my mother was very nervous, as she has never had any major surgery in her life, and that morning, the family was there with her and reassuring her, that all would go well and this was now a common surgery. She was getting her hip replaced first. Well the time went by and it was time for her to be taken inside. We all kissed and hugged her and said we would see her in a little while. The surgery is about 1 1/2 hours. So at this time we all went and had a seat and waited. Well after about 2 hours, I was a bit concerned, so I asked them about her status and they said she was still in surgery. Ok then. Well this went on for a few more hours, and we were all very worried at this point. Almost 6 hours later, we got to see the surgeon and find out what happened. Turns out during the surgery when they were attaching the femur replacement the other bone split in two. Later we found out that her other bone was so soft it split open so easily (like butter was her exact words). The doctor had 4 other surgeons in there with her to try and help my mom. She told us in 15 years of surgery she had never seen this before. Well at this point she reassured us she was stable and everything would be ok.

We got to see her and she was in rough shape. In the next week she had two blood transfusions and then a third another week later. She has been in the hospital for 3 months now. She was in critical care for a very long time, and when finally out and in intensive care we thought all was ok, but then she developed pneumonia and fluid in her lungs and back in the critical care again. For close to two months, it was a tough time, and we did not know what to expect. Finally much later she was stable and her appetite was back and things looked better. Because of the severity of her surgery, she had to wear a brace the whole time and was not allowed to put any weight on it at all and was put in a wheel chair when needed.

Well to get to the good news. The surgeon has seen my mother three times since the operation, and would take x-rays and make sure everything was healing properly and in place, keeping me informed. Well today was the forth visit, and she told my mother everything looked good, and the brace could come off now. She would now start to rehabilitate her leg by applying pressure and working with the physiotherapist. She said if all goes well, she can come home in the next few weeks.

To hear this news, was the best thing for me in a long while. It's been a very hard time with my mother like this, and other things that have happen. So this was a great relief. My mother was in tears of course, but happy to hear the good news. What a thing for her to have to go through at 77 years old. She is one strong woman. It's still of course going to be a long slow road to recovery, but for her to be able to come home will make such a difference.

Everyday, I just prayed that she would come home, and be ok. That is all I wanted. Also I'm grateful as some of my friends had very kind words, and some were praying for her as well. So it looks like she will be able to be home to spend Christmas with her family.

Well that's the good news of my day, that I decided to share with all of you.

Till next time
