Relatives of the girl, identified as "MM," carried out an "honor killing," reports The Guardian.

Police discovered the girl's remains — in a sitting position, her hands tied — under a chicken pen.

The Turkish paper Hurriyet reported on its Web site that police were tipped off by an informant.

The girl's father and grandfather were reportedly arrested, but it is unclear if they have been charged. The girl's mother was also arrested but later released.

The Guardian's Robert Tait writes that, according to local media reports, a postmortem exam showed soil in the girl's stomach and lungs.

The father had told relatives he was unhappy that his daughter had male friends, Tait writes.

Official figures indicate that approximately half of all murders in Turkey are "honor killings." More than 200 such murders take place each year.  **************** "honor killings." my ass!!!!!!!!!!

Horrible story.....Yet, I don't know whether this honor killing or selling a daughter to become a prostitute like in many countries in Indochina region is worse.

About that news.... I am not sure if she married to the rapist or the other guy. Coz if she and her parents arranged her to marry to another guy, then I think that's the reason why they were punished. If not, then they r probably worse than the countries in the middle east!

I don't think that's right mate. Would appreciate input from our Turkish expert on this but am sure Kahta is not a Kurdish area. Although the Kurds do have a history of honour killing too.

Doesn't change the horror of the story and exemplifies the continue oppression and denial of basic human rights for women under some parts of Islam.

Iain_D, it was a Kurdish family as was reported in a more detailed report on Spiegel Online. And yes, this is one particular barbaric and grisly murder.

There are dozens of those killings (and I really can't bring myself to use the H-word for this) happening every year in other European countries like Germany. What really get's me when they are caught is that some lawyer tries to get them off the hook pleading for manslaughter instead for murder...beggars belief.

in around year 2007 it was infamous news "one Arabian girl stoned to death" not even one person help her because the leader was her own father same this case

Turkey is actually a secular country and what these people have done will get them life under Turkish law too. Not much different what one expects form our home countries.
