BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- A Bangkok Airways plane crashed at an airport at a resort island in Thailand, killing the pilot and injuring 37 people Tuesday, aviation officials said.

The plane carrying 68 people and four crew members skidded and then crashed after landing at Koh Samui airport, officials with the civil aviation department said.

The ATR-72 turboprop had taken off from the town of Krabi on the west coast Thailand for its trip to the resort island of Koh Samui.

Air traffic control warned the pilot of volatile winds before the plane landed, aviation officials said.

Seven people were seriously injured and emergency officials were working to free the plane's co-pilot who was trapped in the plane, officials said.

Hope the rest of the injured passengers pull through...

i used to fly bkk/samui twice a month for work for 2 years. And I'd have to say that some of landings were often quite frightening (especially in the jets) .. Is the runway shorter than average or something? I'm sure it is.

I know the airport too. Think the runway is normal, but when i was there it was raining very strong too and the runway was complete under water.

Like it was now, think the plane couldt not stop, was sliding on the water....

This is not really helping and freaks me out....Im flying tomorrow:(((

its still safer to fly than drive. but accidents like this shouldn't happen. if its not safe to land, than the pilot shouldn't land. but greedy airlines means if the pilot didn't land, he would be looking for another job tomorrow. but at least he'd still be alive and 37 people wouldn't be injured.

There is a certain crosswind limitation for all aircraft and if its over the limit we dont land. Its just to wait or go to a different airport.

If the wind, visibility,braking in case of snow or any other weathercondition is below the established limit there is not going to be a landing.

If its above we make an approach and if it gets unsafe we make go around

Pilots want to go home after work as most people,we are pilots not kaminikaze pilots(why did those guys wear helmets by the way)

Zleepy the runway isn't all that short, 2,060 metres (compare that to the London City Airport's single runway of 1,510m, and that is licensed to handle aircraft up to the size of the Airbus A318). Looks like it was the erratic wind that might have caused the accident.

Very similar to crash in Phuket 2 yrs ago. Wind + rain , bad weather conditions, can't stop and overrun/or lost control on the ground. "lucky people", cos plane lost control on the ground, as I remember on Phuket was be wind shear, when plane was "misplaced" and hit the ground on low speed by quickly changed wind direction.

I remember departure from Samui in 2005 in tropical rain condition, I think flights will be cancelled, but we was late only one hour... just realize now how this may be dangerous...

I feel sorry for the pilot and his family. It's sad when people are killed in such accidents.

I hope those injured will recover quickly.

In July 1998 I sailed Kho Lanta to Langkawi about 60 nautical miles, it was cloudy and rainy with winds 15 to 20 knots. I recall sailing though 4 squalls with winds up to 30 knots, off of Kho Tarutao we were hit by 40 knots winds. We made Langkawi by sunset, tired but glad to have made it.
