Calling a cop a 'prick' is OK: court

A NSW magistrate has ruled it is acceptable for a police officer to be called a "prick" because the word is part of everyday language.

Waverley Local Court magistrate Robbie Williams made the ruling yesterday when clearing University of NSW science student Henry Grech of an offensive language charge over an altercation with a police officer at Bondi Junction last year, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The court had heard Mr Grech called Senior Constable Adam Royds a “prick” after the student was confronted about jumping a barrier.

"I consider the word prick is of a less derogatory nature than other words and it is in common usage in this country," Mr Williams said.

"A police officer on a number of occurrences would hear words like this used on a much worse scale ... police officers would be used to this type of language."

A spokesman for the NSW Police Association slammed the ruling and said it was effectively approving the use of bad language against police officers.
