probably a combination of size and their experience.

There's a chance some Thais had one bad experience or heard about rude African dude in a nightclub.

(I've seen some guys behave quite uncouth)

and project that unto any person with dark skin.

Like the same way when there will be 6 people walking down the street and the tuk tuk drivers ask only the farang whether they want to "boom boom"... what every farang sleep with the notorious "boom boom" lady? or the Thai guy that passed in front of me doesn't want some "boom boom"?

I also get that impression sometimes. But then I'm wider than most thais, and while I shower monthly ( whether I need it or not) it doesn't take too long wandering around in the hot sun to be somewhat less than fresh.

It's not you...its them.....we just have to get used to the fact that there will always be people who are uncomfortable around foreigners - they see dark skinned folk and assume Nigerian scammers... and they see white skin and assume German or Brit sex-tourist....ho hum...

The good thing is that we are lucky that NOT all Thais think this way - enlightened people all over the world accept us each as they find us, and the locals are just the same.

actually, I like the extra room. you wanna great tip for getting it during the rush hour? Carry around one of those little hospital pharma bags filled with any medical looking packages. Then throw in a cough here and there. With H1N1 scaring the bejeezus out of everyone, you'll have plenty of elbow room in no time.

This just happened to me the other day. I had bursitis in my elbow and it became infected. I went to see the doc for meds and afterwards, headed off to work. It was the first time ever on the skytrain that I wasn't mashed againts a wall or trying to avoid stepping on the feet of someone sitting down.

We afraid and not familiar with stranger expats who speak English, no matter you are farang, indian, african... If we know you, you won't have feeling such we afraid at you. It's is our normal habits. I work with 62 indians, some are smelly. they are just like other race, few are selfish while most of them are good or really good people. I'm happy to work with them because I know them :)

Never been on a Thai bus, but on the trains I always stand. I figure I take up too much space.

But maybe it's a "be careful around men" thing. Because thinking back, I often see foreigner men have a seat open next to them if they sit. That didn't seem to be the case with foreign women. And Thai people sit next to my wife with no problem.

Hmmmmm. Interesting observation Big D.
