Grange Fair II - Let's Eat!
The second edition of my Grange Fair 2009 journal series deals with fair food so of course it's dedicated to AAA!As I mentioned in volume I, fairs are a great albeit corny tradition in the summer and fall here. The Central Pennsylvania Grange Fair is probably one of the most traditional, running 135 consecutive years. My grandmother's brother took my mother there as a girl in the 1930's and I have cousins who camp there all week long now. I try to go there for a day or two to see them (it's about a 3 hour drive for me) and walking through the exhibits and tent rows is a great nostalgia trip.Of course, one of the top physical pleasures in life is food (as one ages and/or lives an isolated life as I do it moves further up the list) and fairs are an excuse to gorge on the worst: fair food!So..... as AAA says...... Ready????.................... Let's go!.........................Ok, it's morning and I spy the place from last year:< An American cannot start the day without this tradition. The girls take my order and start to work:< And... here it is - scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, toast and coffee!< Ok, I'm awake now and ready to get serious about eating bad things. Hmm, maybe....< Dang, it smells so good!< What to do, what to do...< Ah - here we go. You expats will recognize this immediately. Cake batter drizzled into hot oil, deep fried and covered in powdered sugar. They are so sweet and filling I can eat only half before I need to puke. Here is the funnel cake!< Ooof, ok, now I waddle along to the next place.Um....< Wait, what's that smell?< Fresh roasted peanuts! Still warm! < Ok, that was just a tease..... Now what - it's getting a little hot.... did I see any ice cream?Oh, yes I did: < Williamsport Pennsylvania's famous Sunset Ice Cream! They make their milk shakes the old-fashioned way - with real ice cream.< Oh, baby. Come here and let me ravage you.< Ahh, was it good for you too? Ok, it's getting supper time....I remember this place from years past:< Yes, yes, YES! Char-grilled and marinated chicken breast, onion, lettuce and ranch dressing in a freshly-baked pita:< Ok, now I'm hungry. What about some dessert?I think I can afford a little sweet food. And here it is:< This may be a local thing too.< Apple dumplings. A peeled apple wrapped in dough, cooked, sweet cinnamon syrup drizzled on it and to add a little flavor they heap cinnamon ice cream atop that:< Ok, that's the end of the day.Sorry I missed a few of the things I ate because in my hungry zeal I forgot to take photos of the cotton candy, chocolate-dipped ice cream cone, steak sandwich, hot dog and fresh lemonade. There will be a next time.
