Babbling on and on

It was quite a nice sunny day yesterday over here. So I went for a walk to the closest supermarket, which is about 5 mins drive. My beloved beau gave me direction and we looked at the map online to give me the rough idea of the route that I would take. The route was easy but I took the wrong turn and ended up asking this one girl along the road. The supermarket was just 3 mins walk from where I was, but she sent me to a totally opposite direction!Remembering the map, I knew it wasn't the right way, so I called my beau and asked for the direction again. I found the place with no problem after getting off the phone. He drove to the supermarket to meet me for a breif grocery shopping. Then we head to town for Burger King. (Do you know that Hungry Jack's in Aus is actually Burger King?)Being used to the way it is in Thailand and in the US, I went in and ordered a set menu and asked to substitute the fries with onion rings, normally with a lil additional cost. Speaking with foreign accent and the request I made, the girl at the counter looked at me like I came from a different planet! It was almost like she was thinking to herself, where the hell I got this idea from. This happened after my Starbucks experienced last week, so I kinda accepted it and ordered my sandwich and onion rings separately. I ordered Angus burger, which supposed to be the best of beef available at Burger King, but the meat didn't have any flavor. The normal whopper patty in Thailand has much more taste than the Angus burger here, let alone all the good meat in the US! My bf complained a lot that meat here doesn't have much taste and I never really understood what he meant until yesterday. I guess I have been so spoiled with all the good food we have in Thailand and always take it for granted. >_<A friend of mine called yesterday, she's a British-Chinese, so I told her what happened at Burger King. She said she apologized on behalf British ppl that there was no flexibility in this country! It's almost like there's no choice for people to choose at all. U can only get what's available in front of u and that's it.BTW, if u know anywhere that sells Cheetos in the UK, please tell me! The cheese corn puff by Walkers doesn't have any cheesy taste. :-( We are gonna leave for York later today. It was kind of silly to make a booking before checking the weather. My bf always says that u have to continue living ur life regardless of the weather, otherwise u won't get to do anything at all. So we are going to York, although the forecast said it's gonna rain tomorrow. I am looking forward to visiting York Minster, Castle Howard, The Shambles, and if we are lucky, we'll get to walk the wall of York. Other two things that I am looking forward to are fish and chips and cream tea! My bf got recommendations for the shops that serve the traditional meal and afternoon tea. I'll try to lower my expectation this time!!Better get ready... we are leaving soon. Have a great weekend!

Cream teas are best in Cornwall or Devon.

Make sure you get CLOTTED cream and home-made strawberry jam - not a brand name.

And if you want good beef.... don't go to a burger joint!!!

Find a decent steak house - try Harvilles in York... they have Royal Angus fillet.

Enjoy.

B of D:

Sounds like we have a growing fan of the USA here...! a rare item on TF! You Go Girl!

Rightly or not, food in England seems to always get bad reviews; the weather is beginning to

get very cool here too (USA)---hope you learn to like the seasons---maybe take a trip into the Alps and

get into areas with a complete winter (snow and ice), winter is quite beautiful if you're dressed for it.

You're right thouugh... the foods available / flexability with your selections here and as I experience in the

last couple of weeks in Thailand it's easy to get spoiled by and take for granted.

Don't lower your expectations! Just roll with the punches. They have great pubs, lots of sights and all of the English I have met were witty and pleasent people! You will have a great time as you get more familiar!

there is only one place to go in York for afternoon tea - Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms!!! Accept no substitute!!! 6-8 St Helen's Square, York. (there is also a smaller version near York Minster)

My 2 favourite places in England are York and Bath; both beautiful cities with a rich heritage (Bath for the Romans, York for the Scandinavians - Vikings to the uneducated. I lived just down the road from York for 3 years, and my ex mum in law lives about 4 miles away - so got to visit lots of times.

As to the food; fast food is **** full stop. Get your bf to take you to a really good English country pub for sunday lunch - roast beef, potatoes and veg and home made Yorkshire pudding...yummm.

And as Dave rightly says; get to a decent steak house. Proper Angus comes from Aberdeenshire - again, accept no pale imitations!!!

And if your bf takes you to a few good (and I mean good) restaurants, look for Scottish seafood on the menu - best in Britain and as good as anywhere else!!

I go along with E-Bob.

Even I don't eat Burger King. Thats not beef, thats cardboard!! Aberdeen Angus Beef is fantastic, but at least go to a proper restaurant. Also, you should visit Harrogate. Very nice.

I don't know how you got sunshine yesterday in October in the UK. Consider yourself lucky.:) It rained all day here in London

As for today, it is forecast heavy rain, and strong winds everywhere. Feel sorry for all those poor soldiers and everyone else that have to march in it for the Lord Mayors parade in London. If you have to stay inside, you might like to watch that on TV. Starts around 11 a.m.
