i think it's f**king despicable what those guys do ... all because small dicked asian guys think it improves their sexual ability !! f**king pathetic !!

don't want to go on a rant on ur journal, but they don't even use the sharks as food. just cut of their fins and most of the time chuck them back in the sea. to either drown or be eaten by other sharks !!

It is a disgusting trade, Every year Australia stops illegal fishing boats in our waters. The boats are seized the crew imprisoned and the catch destroyed. In just abot every instance they are after sharks and most have a haul of fins onboard.

Not trying to be rude here, but about 100 million sharks are killed each year for food.

For example, Fish and Chip - the "Fish" comes from Shark meat - in Victoria, we call it "flake".

The fact is, many in my country and in other places around the world, eat shark meat almost every day with almost every meal - in Australia alone, we have thousands of Fish and Chip shop!!!

Yes, the VDO is highly emotive and made many allegations, but you should check the facts for yourself about the number of sharks killed each year.

Having said that, it would be great that these commercial shark hunters saved the meat for others to consume, instead of throwing it back into the sea. It would have saved many more sharks being killed somewhere else for food.

And to Ciaran, you must have a serious issue with Asian guys - one stole your ex girlfriend perhaps?!?

i don't have any issues with most Asian guys ... but i do have issues with anybody who kills wild animals because of their own complexes. i eat meat myself, so wouldn't criticize others for eating shark meat. it's the pricks who only eat the soup made from shark fin i have issues with .... and obviously these guys have issues with the size of their dicks and sexual performance !! likewise guys who eat tiger penises, bears bile etc etc !!

and not that it's any of ur f**king business, but to the best of my knowledge most of my ex thai gfs hooked up with another farang guy after we broke up and NOT an asian guy !! although if u know any different fair enough !!

This journal is about saving the Sharks. Not about Tiger Pernises or Bear Biles - that is another journal and another day!!!

As to why Asian people consume shark fins, well, it is mostly for status symbol - the "hi-so" image. The other myth is that it has healing properties for "cancer"....nothing about sexual performance.

The only one who has made such an association - Shark Fins, small dicks and Sexual performance, has been you.

Where did you get your facts from?!?

Another point: can the West really say to the Chinese...oh you shouldn't kill and eat Shark meat (fin), but we in the West can and should continue this practice?!?

I don't see a difference - regarding consumption.

Both could compromise by selling the by-products (either fins or meat) to the other party - that way, less sharks will be killed each year.

Afterall, both are consumed as food!!!

Why we need to keep sharks in the oceans and out of our soup bowls.

Sharks play a very important role in the oceans in a way that an average fish does not. Sharks are at the top of the food chain and keep populations of other fish healthy and in proper proportion for their eco-system.

Where sharks are eliminated, other bad events result. The fish that sharks used to eat become more plentiful. For example, no sharks means there will be more skates and rays which then eat more shellfish. The result would be no shellfish for humans, and shellfish won’t be able to filter and clean the ocean water. This is not mere speculation: there are already several studies indicating that the elimination of sharks results in loss of other desireable species and major disruption of the ecosystem.

Sharks have survived for 450 million years and yet we are on course for killing them off within a few years. Then, there will be no more shark fin soup, other seafood species will disappear, and the oceans will no longer support the healthy balance of sea life that we need to survive. Even from the perspective of self-interest, shark fin soup is problematic.

That's all good cos apparently eating shark fin soup (and whale meet) may cause sterility in males but also harm young children and pregnant mothers due to the high content of mercury.

Sharks x 100 million per year. Even the chinese couldn't sustain that loss.

Gain and biachung: the Asian (Chinese) are not the only ones eating shark meat.

Westerners do it every day - it is called "fish and chip".

The VDO was so hypocritical - did you see him visit factories in the West where they process shark meat for "fish and chip"??

There are hundreds like that in western countries too!!!

If the Asian (Chinese) stop tomorrow from eating shark fin soup, do you think Westerners will stop eating fish and chip???

Moreover, shark fin soup is expensive, they are not regularly consumed like "fish and chip".

Caviar is more endangered, do you see Westerners stop eating caviar?!?

Is Caviar not a status symbol?

The issue of waste is legitimate point to make, but not the others!!!

You should ask your friend; why did he not make a similar VDO about the West killing shark for meat or lobby Western countries to outlaw eating shark meat first, before he goes preaching to Asian (Chinese) on why they should stop eating shark meat (fin)?

A bit hypocritical, don't you think?!?

As a final point on this issue, the buying and selling of shark fins are not illegal in any country that I am aware of - and shark fin soup is legally sold in restaurants (mainly chinese) all over the world - Europe, Americas, Australia and Asia.

The ISSUE is illegal fishing - where the fishermen either did not have a licence to fish in that area or was fishing in marine parks/conservation areas.

Sadly, ILLEGAL fishing is not isolated to sharks alone - chai mai?!?

Even though I'm a scuba diver and love diving with sharks, my issue is that they waste most of the shark. It would be like they killing cows just for the tongue. If you're going to catch sharks for the fins then find some use for the rest of the shark. It's such a waste.
