The conversation was about a guy who wrote a ridiculous letter asking why 7-11 staff don't greet him in English not Thai.

Immediately a bunch of expats attacked him but tarred every farang with the same brush - 'pompous', 'arrogant', 'unable to adapt'.

These guys piss me off because they act like they are the only farangs who know Thailand and they resent other white people being here, invading their kingdom.

Your letter makes a good point and it has been a tad farcical reading the letters in the last few days.

Why would i care if i am greeted in thai or english ? its thailand i should be talking in their language if i am in in 7-11 at 2am all i care about is that the microwave works so my cheese tostie is piping hot !

I demand all people speak thai to me in following locations: 7-11, supermarkets, street vendors, restaurants

(otherwise I feel like an alien and not integrated enough)

I demand all people speak english to me in following locations: government offices, service related businesses, clinics and pharmacies

(otherwise I don't understand them)

I find farangs who 'know' all there is about Thailand delusional and annoying.

But I don't think the staff in 7-11's need to greet any one in English, if they do it's a bonus.

Most of these stores would still churn out a great profit without any foreigners, quite different to hotels, bars and restaurants that rely heavily on foreign income.

i wish the 7/11 staff would shut up. say nothing everytime someone walks in the door. the sound of their SHOUTS are annoying, disingenuous, and pretentious.

and i find the letters to be a source of entertainment, english bob's included. some are more entertaining than others. this works better if you dont take things seriously
