In Thailand, use of natural gas is mainly limited to electricity generation and in some industries, according to Termchai Boonnak, vice-president at PTT Plc.

PTT, the national energy flagship, has been expanding its city gas pipeline network to support the use in commercial, industrial and power sectors including Suvanabhumi airport and the Government Office Centre in Chaeng Watthana. The projects are expected to serve as a model for city natural gas usage in a cogeneration system. The company plans to expand to the National Energy Complex and hotels, and to hospitals near the pipelines.

However, Dr Termchai says bringing natural gas into household use in Bangkok is still a difficult task.

"Part of the problem is that city planning does not facilitate the expansion of natural gas pipelines," he says.

As well, Thais would continue to consume electricity as prices are relatively cheap.
