Contrails...

Atmospheric conditions for producing contrails were really good on this day, so I took a few vids. You can see them form immediately behind the engines of this oncoming A-340 and then gut sucked into the wingtip vortices leaving a long wispy tail. I think we were somewhere over Russia...can't remember.

What are contrails?

@aNDERS. Depends on the country. In the USA, Europe and others, it can be as little as 1000ft of altitude in RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minima) airspace. Russia, China and Mongolia use meters for altitude assignments instead of feet. I don't know of any other countries that do this and it's a pain in the assss. Russia doesn't have RVSM airspace so there is more than 2000' of vertical separation as was the case in this video.

I can tell you that on clear days and nights, at over 1,100 mph rate of closer, 1000' feet looks a little close to us too. ;)

Nice vid mate.

Erm, shouldn't you have been, like, flying the plane or something?

You've done your fair share of chemtrail seeding I'm sure mate come on you can tell us we won't hold it against you, you bastard.

@Teddy. Yea the weather in Europe has been pretty messy this winter (global warming). Makes our days a lot longer having to go through the de-ice process and it's not a quick process at airports that are not used to it. I go back to work next week so I'll probably miss ya. So enjoy the warm weather. See ya next time. Cheers!

PiAnt...Thanks biker dude. Those inflatable Autopilots like the one in the movie Airplane give us (soft on the outside, crunchy on the inside) kind of pilots time to do other important things...like eating, sleeping and taking videos for our friends. And no, I haven't done any seeding in a very long time...A Dr. took care of that. ;)

This one was pretty close...

200 feet

It's very very rare that this happens and we have a nice little box in the cockpit called TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) that serves as a back up to air traffic controllers responsibility of keeping us from running into each other in the air.

In the past an ATC instruction overrode any instruction that might have been given by TCAS like "climb" or "descend' date='" but there was a case a few years ago over Europe where there was a conflict between 2 large aircraft, one being a cargo plane, the other a passenger airplane, where both airplanes were given instructions from their TCAS to maneuver to avoid a potential collision, but the ATC guy gave the pilots of both airplanes opposite instructions and the planes collided at high altitude. Both aircraft and all onboard were lost. Since this accident the rules have been changed and now TCAS overrides any instruction given by ATC. So if we receive an instruction from our TCAS to climb or descend...we do it immediately and inform ATC after the Resolution Advisory (RA) has been complied with.
