Last night Ked and I went on a river diner cruise. I am still shaking my head at the complete lack of any sort of common courtesy some people exhibit. And they do it with absolutely no shame whatsoever.

Dinner was buffet style and you had people blatantly throwing elbows forcing their way ahead of others. But then you had people like this one guy who completely filled his plate with prawns. No, not just filled his plate, he took every single prawn that was in the serving dish. My guess is he had about 50 large prawns on his plate. Was he done? Hell no. Then he went to the opposite side of the buffet line which was a mirror image and kept topping up his prawns out of the other serving dish.

There is absolutely no way he could eat all of them. There's no way even his entire table of family could eat than many prawns.

Another guy basically lifted up the serving tray and put all of the watermelon they had on his plate. My guesstimate is about 20 large slices of watermelon.

One guy tried to elbow ahead of me in the line. He started throwing the elbow in and I wouldn't budge. He made a second try throwing some body weight into it. Again, I wouldn't budget. When he came back for a third try I told him, "Listen, I'm not moving, dude. Get behind."

Then there was the guy who just ate there in line and kept refilling his plate as he was eating. There was also the lady who reached into the serving tray with her hands and tasted whatever it was and then spit it out AND PUT IT BACK IN THE SERVING TRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF is wrong with people like this?

Just a note . . . all of the people described above were tourists.

Actually they were speaking, from what I could tell since I don't speak it myself, Arabic. Lots of women with scarves on their head but they seemed to be too light skinned to be from The Middle East region.

I know exactly what you mean... It's other people's culture and it baffles me / us.

I watched Chinese tourists swarm over a breakfast buffet once - JUST like locusts but shouting at the tops of their voices.

it's something i use to see very often around bkk, fulfill the table with dishes and orders which won't be finishes. it happen even more often at Buffet style restaurant. filling the plate with a large amount of the same kind of food, then, after the first bite...MAI AROI.

It's a shame what money does to people. The guy taking all the prawns will eat them all, just not today....lolol.

So many people in all cultures think that money gives them the right to do whatever they want. The hardest people I had to deal with when I was in the casino business, was first generation Arabic women in the USA. In their native country they had absolutely no rights being a women, and thus being second class to the men, but when they got to the USA, and had the freedom to be equal, they went overboard. They didn't understand the concept, and thought it ment they were better than everyone else, and could do, and act, how ever they wanted....lolol. Those were the hardest people to deal with, and still be curtious.

Cutting in line (the que), no matter where you are at, seems to be a common Thai trait also, so they actually were adapting to the culture.....hahahaha.

@KB: Yes, it does sort of remind you of the ghetto person who gets a random free upgrade to first class and tries to steal everything that isn't nailed down and at the same time is complaining about the quality of everything.

You're right, it comes from a mentality of poverty. When they get their shot at the top of the pecking order they treat everyone like dirt.

But at a certain level it sort of makes me laugh. Not the cruelty or lack of manners but the fact that Thailand is going overboard trying to attract people like this.
