Hey guys,

Here is a question. I heard that sticky rice has a higher sugar content than other rices. I was told that eating a lot can lead to someone contracting diabetes. Obviously in later life, when you get older.

Is this true or was I told a lie??

Thanks

Well from the fact I found from this site (sorry but the contents are Thai) said about your question that

Thai to English translation from Google (modified by Sasie):

5. Sticky rice is harmful to the person with diabetes or not. Carbohydrates that are affecting changes in blood sugar levels differently. Dietitian to determine the Glycemic index and recommended not to eat foods with high sugar index over 70. For the index of brown rice 71 and sticky rice 75 classified as high with both type but sticky rice is slightly higher than the rice. However, brown rice of both rice has sugar index lower than the same varieties of rice polishing. Therefore, eat more brown rice than rice polishing.

Don't know but unless your planning to eat a helluva lot of it, I'd stick with the 'everything in moderation' philosophy

That is true. The reason I ask is that I am assuming that Thai people eat it a lot. So I was coming to the conclusion that Thai a lot of people have it but I'm probably wrong. Hmmmmmm I only right once in a blue moon lol

Hmmmmmmm interesting. Western diets are no better though. We tend to eat more fatty foods and fast foods. Everything we eat on a daily basis is pretty much processed food. Very rare we can eat freshly made food. At least in Thailand everything is fresh and you have a lot of street food which must be great. Pity we don't have that in the west.

Thanks for the info. You seem to be the go to person when people need information. I will remember this in the future :D

Interesting that you point out Laos, Querida. According to WHO(?) :)) study in 2010 Lao has 0.4% of overweighed male and 3.0% of overweighed female but their random blood glucose level is consider much higher than neighbor countries (Vietnam and Indonesia for exp). It must have something to do with sticky rice. ;)))

Stop-eating-sticky-rice campaign should be promoted!! ;))

Well my mom who's the local people from the northern part of Thailand -Chiang Mai prefer eating sticky rice. It can see that northern or northeast people rather eating sticky rice than other part of Thailand.

Hmmmmmmmmm all good answers and questions. So sticky rice is good in moderation like Teila said. Whether people from Thailand or Laos eat more than each other is a question for debate. Some research needs to be done on this I think :D

That and quit putting so much damn sugar in the Pad Thai. I was watching someone making a huge serving of it for a party and I was like, "Holy CRAP! That's a lot of sugar, yo!!!"

Well for my experience, eating a lot of sticky rice at time may cause you've gassy for the person who always eat brown or rice polishing. It's no doubt that people at Northern and Northeast and Loas will eat more sticky rice than other part of Thailand. Central, Southern and Eastern people eat more rice polishing. It's the culture.

The Thai food and culture has influenced by the surroundings more than what you can see from the map. May be let read Thai food and culture from below links will make you've a clear view. (Again I always give the info of everything haha)
