News Travels (Too) Fast!!!

Been a while since I last realized how fast news can travel. Many years ago a few American friends used to joke with me that rumors (news) travel faster among Thais than satellite TV. A couple of incidents back then actually supported the joke.

Today it was almost like a deja vu.

I broke a routine of having lunch alone to having some pizza with an ex-colleauge (but still in front of my computer at work). We chatted about odds and ends, then she said that her company is looking for a position, exactly the same as what I am doing. So I said why not, I'd try and see if I was qualified.

Co-incidentally, around an hour later, another ex-colleague sent me an instant message to ask about the same position, I discussed over lunch. I told her about the position, salary and incentive as best as I could.

At the end, I decided to tell her that I was going to apply as well. Reason is my work experience is a better fit for the position, and I know a few people in that company, so I am somewhat in an advantageous position comparing to her. Just in case I am a successful candidate, she wouldn't think I applied because I knew it from her.

3 hours later, my boss, who was on leave today, sent me a skype message telling me that if I wanted a reference to apply for that exactly the same position that I spoke to the second ex-colleague, feel free to let him know.

I was very surprised to see that message from my boss. So I asked him who he heard it from, but he said it wasn't the second ex-colleague I spoke to. I told him that I knew of only 2 people that I mentioned this with. There might be 3, 4, 5 or even more people know about this now.

It's not a secret. My boss is really relaxed on this, and would be happy to see me move to a better position. It is just a reminder though, that sometimes news travels much faster than one thinks it does.

Have a great night and a great weekend ahead!

Yes I agree with you especially if you have Facebook, you may surprise that a stranger is your friend's friend and sometimes it's not only a person but a few. May be your boss is a friend of your ex-colleaque. Then it's easy to have a fast news or rumors from your friend to other as same as you had an experience ^^
