Kasikorn, OTP Passwords, and Online Banking

The other day I was getting ready to transfer some money from my Kasikorn Bank account to someone and it dawned on me that Kasikorn's online banking requires that you confirm the transaction by typing in a one-time-password that they send to you via SMS.

I still have my AIS SIM card but I'm not even sure if it's authorized for international calls. Regardless, it seems like a pain in the ass to hunt down my AIS SIM every time that I want to do some online banking.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, there's a way around it.

First, you need to put the SIM into a phone. Since I returned from Thailand, I got a new iPhone 4S which is locked to the AT&T network so that means I can't use the AIS SIM in it. Luckily Ked's still using my 3GS phone which I bought in Thailand and is unlocked.

I slapped the AIS SIM in the 3GS and let it acquire a signal. I then went into Kasikorn Cyber Banking and navigated to change my security settings. Before I could proceed it requested to send an SMS with a one-time-password.

The SMS arrived on the 3GS and I typed that into the security settings form. Once verified, you have the option to change from SMS one-time-password to double PINs (2 PIN Authentication). I selected the 2 PIN method and entered in an additional password (different from your Kasikorn Cyber Banking password) and voila . . . I no longer have to use SMS one-time-passwords.

Obviously, if you can do all of this before actually leaving Thailand it's probably best.
