In perhaps the most amusing effort to discredit US President Barack Obama's plan for nationalized health care - if not the most ridiculous - US financial newspaper Investor's Business Daily has said that if Stephen Hawking were British, he would be dead. "The controlling of medical costs in countries such as Britain through rationing, and the health consequences thereof, are legendary," read a recent editorial from the paper. "The stories of people dying on a waiting list or being denied altogether read like a horror script... "People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the UK, where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless." The paper has since been notified that Hawking is both British and still among the living. And it has edited the editorial, acknowledging that the original version incorrectly represented the whereabouts of perhaps the world's most famous scientific mind. But it has not acknowledged that its mention of Hawking misrepresented the NHS as well. "I wouldn?t be here today if it were not for the NHS," Hawking told The Guardian. "I have received a large amount of high-quality treatment without which I would not have survived." The best you can say about Investor's Business Daily is that unlike US radio talk host Rush Limbaugh, it has not compared Obama's health care logo to a swastika. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/12/hawking_british_and_alive/

(probably should've done this as a blog but ah well ) Considering that at the moment TF doesn't have many western women I do realise that maybe this isn't exactly the right place to say this but I need to get it of my chest. The main question is..... How do you get used to your friends leaving? I've been feeling a bit down as most of my friends are leaving Thailand in quick succession. For instance: 1) Rakhee went back to South Africa 2) Randy went back to London for a while (she was meant to go for 3 months but she's no longer sure whether she's coming back) 3) Chris went back to the states 4) Ashley went back to Colorado 5) Chelsea has moved to Chumpon & will stay there until she visits England then will go back to South Africa 6) Mariza is travelling with her bf & is gonna decide whether to go back to South Africa afterwards 7) Annabel & Jasmine are going back to England in about a month 8) Linn (my closest friend here) is going to Sweden (but it's only for a month ) 2-6 happened in the same month! 8 is happening tomorrow! None of them were tourists either (except for Jasmine) They all had been living here for quite some time, had jobs, apartments, etc... I've got a friend in Laos who has decided to go back to England as he can't deal with making friendships & seeing them leave shortly after anymore. Mind you, the bar he was working for got burnt down but I still think the options for him in Laos are far better than in England, what with the unemployment situation. lol. So yeah, I know I need to grow some balls & stop being a moaning sissy but still, any thoughts or comments are much welcomed
