It's going to be Avatar by a mile. While Up is a good for kids, it doesn't have the appeal of Avatar and literally has no chance at all of best picture.

:)

but but but. there is a but. Avatar's script is nothing new, basically retold old story like Pocahontas. Would Oscars overlook that.

depends how much the studios spend to help them overlook that !!!!!

i thought avatar was massively over-rated. enjoyable film to watch, but mostly because of the excellent special effects ... and as Tonia says nothing really new in the story line !!! the good guys always win in the movies .... well nearly always !!

The concept behind the story is unique though: humans interacting with another species by inhabiting avatar bodies, while the actors are doing the same thing in the vfx studio, by inhabiting the CG avatar bodies of their characters using motion capture.

That and a really big tree.

Bridges and Bullock both won the awards in the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild----

many of the same vote in the Acadamy... they are very likely to sweep...

Hollywood does love a Glitzy money maker ---------read Avidtar here ...

(Titanic certainly was not a landmark film - and won)

but often will go another way. I might take some good odds against those Blue guys

Hurt Locker --- since it is a bit unique

Christopher Brooker put forward a very credible theory that there are only seven basic story themes;

1. Overcoming the monster

2. Rags to Riches

3. The Quest

4. Voyage and Return

5. Comedy

6. Tragedy

7. Rebirth

Stories, and by default films, will range from a simple use of one of these story types, to an overlapping and interweaving of two or more. Lord of the Rings, for example, probably contains elements of all 7.

There is no true originality in movie making; the originality comes in how a story (or combination thereof) is told and how it is presented.

Avatar was groundbreaking for the effects, not for the story, and for that reason I do believe it will win best film.

I agree with Neo that 'The Hurt Locker' is a good bet for director, and I would probably slip a fiver on Freeman for his portrayal of Mandela in 'Invictus'.

Other than best film, Avatar will probably take some of the technical awards.

:)
