a good friend of mine is a Thai cardiologist who used to work at Paolo but just moved out to Samitivej on Srinakarin. Its a dump. he said he took a hit on his take home salary and the step down in facilities because the old hospital was full of old doctors who would not enter into constructive discussion and debate about cases. while his new teammates were all under 40 and progressive and continuously challenging each other on procedures, reading a lot, etc.

It is the single biggest hindrance to development in the country: graeng jai and like kowrop pu yai.

New army chief weeding out senior watermelon soldiers.

[q]Army chief takes aim at 'red' officers, Bkk Post 19/10/2010[/q]

New army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has wasted no time in wielding his power by ordering a reshuffle of 229 senior officers.

The rejig has led to the transfer of regimental commanders reportedly linked with the red shirt movement. Among them is Col Natthawat Akanibut, son of Gen Pat Akkanibut, who is a close friend of Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh.

He has been removed as commander of the 1st Infantry Regiment (King's Guards) and becomes deputy commander of Kanchanaburi Military District. "His transfer can be considered as a promotion although it's a bit off the track [to the force control unit]," an army source said. Col Pongsawas Phanchit, director of the Operations Division of the 1st Army, was appointed to replace Col Natthawat.

A source said the reason for his transfer was that Col Natthawat had been in charge of the Bangkok-based 1st Infantry Regiment for three years. Gen Prayuth was not confident Col Natthawat could carry out his work any longer. Also, he was connected to Gen Chavalit. "Gen Prayuth is still concerned about soldiers who are close to the red shirts," the source said.

Col Apirat Kongsompong, commander of the 11th Infantry Regiment (King's Guards) which played a key role in dealing with red shirt demonstrators, remains with the regiment despite the fact he has been at the helm for four years.

Other intriguing transfers include the promotion of Col Kiat Srinaka, commander of the 2nd Infantry Regiment (Queen's Guards), one of the influential military clique called Burapha Payak. He is to become deputy commander of the 2nd Infantry Division. Col Kiat played a key role in the clash with red shirt demonstrators at the Khok Wua intersection on April 10.

The latest transfers are viewed as a move to ensure Gen Prayuth has reliable subordinates who can follow his orders to the letter. It was reported some military units did not deal with the red shirt protesters as he wanted.

Perhaps if there was more opportunity for Free Speech, there would be less motivation for tossing hand grenades.

Bollocks.

Bollocks tossing!

Combat log:

English_Bob casting Bollocks

Bollocks tossed you and caused 5K elemental dmg.

You died.

I think EB should attend the next red shirt rally and start swinging his bollocks around in order to disperse the crowd. Much cheaper and more efficient than using poorly trained riot/border police.

We discussed the attacks on Sala Daeng station and the Zuellig building on Silom road (one woman died) at length in this forum.

Seh Daeng associate arrested Bangkok Post 23/12/2010

A former paramilitary ranger suspected of firing grenades at the Sala Daeng skytrain station and other locations in May has been arrested.

Former paramilitary ranger Gems Singsith, 29, is questioned at the Department of Special Investigation about claims that he fired grenades at rival demonstrators on Silom Road in May. TAWATCHAI KEMGUMNERD

Department of Special Investigation director-general Tharit Pengdit said yesterday Gems Singsith was apprehended on Tuesday in front of Thailand Post Co on Chaeng Watthana Road in Bangkok. He was the subject of an arrest warrant to answer terrorism charges. Mr Gems, 29, was taken to the DSI headquarters where he was questioned by officers from the police Special Branch, the army and the National Security Council. The former ranger is from tambon Nam Kham in Muang district of Si Sa Ket. He joined the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protests and became a member of a group working for army specialist Khattiya Sawasdipol, also known as Seh Daeng, as guards for the red shirt rallies in Bangkok this year.

Mr Gems is suspected by the DSI of being one of Seh Daeng's men who fired grenades using M79 launchers at the skytrain station and at rival demonstrators on Silom Road near Sala Daeng intersection in May. He has denied the charge. Maj Gen Khattiya was assassinated in May while giving an interview to a foreign journalist near Sala Daeng intersection.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said the government was helping along attempts to seek the release on bail of red shirt protesters now in detention. Mr Suthep said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was worried about red shirt supporters who violated the law unintentionally during the past protests.

He said this group had not received any assistance from red shirt representatives and so the government had assigned the Rights and Liberties Protection Department to support their bail requests. UDD chair Thida Thavornseth and the group's lawyers yesterday filed letters from seven detained UDD leaders with the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, seeking its support for their bail requests.

The seven are Natthawut Saikua, Weng Tojirakarn, Korkaew Pikulthong, Kwanchai Praipana, Yoswaris Chuklom, Nisit Sinthuprai and Wiphuthalaeng Pattanaphumthai. Ms Thida, the wife of Dr Weng, said she hoped the department would write to the court to seek their bail in two days. Mr Suthep said the court might set conditions for the release of the UDD leaders to ensure there were no breaches of public order.

Mr Natthawut said he would accept all conditions set by the court and would take part in reconciliation efforts if he was released, Ms Thida said. DSI chief Tharit said his department opposed the bail of certain red shirt protesters who were suspected terrorists and believed to be behind the red shirt movement.

It was report here - USA- that the state of emergency had been lifted....it made me wonder what the restrictions there had been, since it sound as though there had been no disturbances nor complaints about the police for sometime....

not a sound about Mr. TS and his schemes

hummmm.... ....as if March through May hardly happened

There have been regular (albeit smaller) protests by the UDD.

With most of their leaders in jail or hiding, life has been much quieter and safer.

Thaksin raised his head after being invited to speak at a Human Rights Conference in USA.... I know, I know... Someone has a wicked sense of humour.

Here are some quotes from Thaksin... "We will continue with our policy of killing drug dealers... Don't worry about human rights." And, "The UN may not investigate these deaths... The UN is not our father."

UDD has a new leader - a woman named Khun Thida. She is the wife of jailed leader Dr Weng. His name became a slang word for gibberish after some disastrous interviews, including the classic, "See this picture of a Red Shirt with a gun? This is only a defensive gun. It cannot be used for attack." (it was a Magnum 45)

She was a member of Red Siam communist party. But she DOES renounce violence - which is a first for UDD.

Jatuporn is currently quiet - he is on trial for defamation of the PM. He tried to sue the judge for failing to hear all his 100 witnesses. His case was dismissed.

His MP's immunity ran out after parliament convened.

An election is expected early next year - as indicated by the sudden generosity of government policies. Peua Thai is furious... Imagine using populist policies to curry favour with voters!

More from UDD... getting increasingly fragmented and desperate.

Got to love the picture of how the new schools are going!

http://www.pattayamail.com/news/red-shirts-cycle-sing-raise-funds-in-pattaya-1086

About 500 supporters of the “red shirt†anti-government movement welcomed 20 red bicyclists from Bangkok, sang songs and listened to a call-in speech from a fugitive leader during a fund-raising rally in Pattaya.

The United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship’s “Pattaya Love†chapter organized the Jan. 10 event to welcome the “Two Legs for Democracy Team,†a group of red shirt cyclists who biked from Bangkok to raise funds for the struggling movement.

Teaching them young - children of the red shirt movement play with toy guns during the fund-raising rally in Pattaya.

Local red shirts followed the bikers down North Road, along Beach Road to Walking Street and up to Soi Khopai, where they joined the rally stage at Khum Thappraya.

Speeches started with calls for the government to suspend taxes on liquid petroleum gas and freeze its price. While there’s nothing the Thai government can do about rising international oil prices, the red shirts are using the increase as an excuse to grouse about taxes.

Later the demonstrators joined in song and general anti-Democrat Party speeches before stopping to hear a call-in speech from leader Jakrapob Penkair, who launched the violent “Red Siam†splinter group and fled for self-exile overseas in 2010 after being charged with lese majeste.

Just so you can identify them when you see them walking down the street. All but 2 of them are now in jail. This was from a day at lunch. The woman is Khun Theda.

The one standing is Dr. Weng I believe.

And I don't know how he is staying out of jail, other than he is a MP.

Seems that a few more PT members are about to jump ship to the BMJ. PT are leaderless and all over the place where they deserve to be........

Very interesting that Banharn and Newin put the past behind them to form a post election alliance to entrench the BMJ & CTP as the king makers.

For a mid year election, I expect BMJ to make inroads in some PT Isan seats, PT to lose nearly all their BKK seats (except for strongholds of Minburi, Bang Khen etc) and BMJ & CTP, along with most of the other minor parties, to stick with the Dems to form a new coalition govt. The new party list formula will assist the Dems.

well they both took a break... but NPR here (in the US) report there were big demonstrations (Yellow shirts I am guessing) against the PM this Saturday and Sunday. so it seems a good time to bring this topic back.......seriously I learned a lot from the posts the last time.... yes there were some irresponsible posts and maybe most were predominated by one side or thought but it was a very interesting read Besides this is the kind of current topic that needs a discussion(s) --- I think............ so what is really happening in Thailand and why?
