Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

More than 10 people have been killed after Israeli commandos stormed a convoy of ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says.

Armed forces boarded the vessels overnight, clashing with some of the 600 protesters on board.

The exact location of the interception is unclear. Israel had warned the ships not to enter its territorial waters.

The ships are carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid to try to break a long-standing Israeli-led blockade.

Israel says its forces were attacked by activists when they got on board.

"The people on the boats were very, very violent toward the soldiers," Israeli military spokeswoman Lt Col Avital Leibovich was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Organisers of the flotilla said at least 30 people were wounded in the incident.

Condemnation

An Israeli government minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, was reported as expressing regret for "all the fatalities".

Turkey, one of whose charities is a main organiser of the flotilla, said it "strongly condemn[ed] these inhumane practices of Israel", AFP said.

Turkish TV pictures taken on board the Turkish ship leading the flotilla appeared to show Israeli soldiers fighting to control passengers.

The footage showed a number of people, apparently injured, lying on the ground. It is not clear whether the fighting is continuing.

Al-Jazeera TV reported from the same ship that Israeli navy forces had fired and boarded the vessel, wounding the captain.

The Al-Jazeera broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, saying: "Everybody shut up!"

'Provocation'

The six-ship flotilla left international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday and was expected to arrive in Gaza later on Monday.

Israel has said it would stop the boats, calling the campaign a "provocation intended to delegitimise Israel".

An economic blockade was imposed by Israel after the Islamist movement Hamas took power in Gaza.

Israel says it allows about 15,000 tones of humanitarian aid into Gaza every week.

But the United Nations says this is less than a quarter of what is needed.

-------------------------------------

Details still sketchy but so far definitely seems another case of over reaction by the Israeli troops.

Thoughts?

Israel stations nuclear missile subs off Iran

Three German-built Israeli submarines equipped with nuclear cruise missiles are to be deployed in the Gulf near the Iranian coastline.

The first has been sent in response to Israeli fears that ballistic missiles developed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah, a political and military organisation in Lebanon, could hit sites in Israel, including air bases and missile launchers.

The submarines of Flotilla 7 — Dolphin, Tekuma and Leviathan — have visited the Gulf before. But the decision has now been taken to ensure a permanent presence of at least one of the vessels.

The flotilla’s commander, identified only as “Colonel Oâ€, told an Israeli newspaper: “We are an underwater assault force. We’re operating deep and far, very far, from our borders.â€

Each of the submarines has a crew of 35 to 50, commanded by a colonel capable of launching a nuclear cruise missile.

The vessels can remain at sea for about 50 days and stay submerged up to 1,150ft below the surface for at least a week. Some of the cruise missiles are equipped with the most advanced nuclear warheads in the Israeli arsenal.

The deployment is designed to act as a deterrent, gather intelligence and potentially to land Mossad agents. “We’re a solid base for collecting sensitive information, as we can stay for a long time in one place,†said a flotilla officer.

The submarines could be used if Iran continues its programme to produce a nuclear bomb. “The 1,500km range of the submarines’ cruise missiles can reach any target in Iran,†said a navy officer.

Apparently responding to the Israeli activity, an Iranian admiral said: “Anyone who wishes to do an evil act in the Persian Gulf will receive a forceful response from us.â€

Israel’s urgent need to deter the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah alliance was demonstrated last month. Ehud Barak, the defence minister, was said to have shown President Barack Obama classified satellite images of a convoy of ballistic missiles leaving Syria on the way to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, will emphasise the danger to Obama in Washington this week.

Tel Aviv, Israel’s business and defence centre, remains the most threatened city in the world, said one expert. “There are more missiles per square foot targeting Tel Aviv than any other city,†he said.

Maybe they should drop a few nukes about before anyone else nearby gets any.

Take all of that and add this (if true)...

Mon, 31 May 2010 7:15p.m.

Palestinian children are being sexually abused while in Israeli custody, says an international children's rights charity.

Defence for Children International, based in Geneva, has collected 100 sworn affidavits from children who say they were mistreated by their captors in order to extract confessions.

At least 14 of these children allege sexual abuse or threats of sexual abuse.

The Israeli military has dismissed the claims.

Middle Eastern news organisation Al-Jazeera reports there are currently 340 Palestinian children being held in Israeli prisons, most on convictions for throwing stones – which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years under Israeli law. Children as young as 12 are tried in military courts, which Israel says is in accordance with international law.

I read the news this morning.. really frustrated..

Who do they think they are.. ******* irritating!!

There are some Sweds on board also..

Sweden calls on Israel to clarify aid convoy attack

"If Israel has used extensive violence and killed people then it has to be seen as very serious. And it is important that there are strong reactions from both Sweden and other countries," Eriksson told news agency TT

Israel's international policy is "We really couldn't give a ****."

They obviously have no intentions of even trying to placate anyone, including the West, in order to achieve a peaceful co-existence with their neighbours. Mind you, their neighbours don't want that either.

They'll no doubt claim "Intelligence reports found that the aid included arms destined for Hezbollah."

The Jews seem so entrenched in their "Jewish persecution", that they can no longer see that the rest of the world couldn't give a fk what religion they are, but are just sick of them just because they're total tossers.

If Iran achieve a nuclear strike capability Israel will have to strike first. Iran's' just too freaky and unstable to be left to decide for themselves whether to annihilate their ancient adversary.

So, give them all nukes and let em get on with it.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.5eaf6bbb255b23063c3b3635bd5f7c52.161&show_article=1

Washington's unprecedented backing for a UN resolution for a nuclear-free Middle East that singles out Israel has both angered and deeply worried the Jewish state although officials are cagey about openly criticising their biggest ally.

The resolution adopted by the United Nations on Friday calls on Israel to join the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and urges it to open its facilities to inspection.

It also calls for a regional conference in 2012 to advance the goal of a nuclear-free Middle East.

Israel is widely believed to be the only nuclear power in the Middle East, with around 200 warheads, but has maintained a policy of deliberate ambiguity about its capabilities since the mid-1960s.

The document, which singles out Israel but makes no mention of Iran's controversial nuclear programme, drew a furious reaction from the Jewish state who decried it as "deeply flawed and hypocritical."

But it was US backing for the resolution which has caused the most consternation among Israeli officials and commentators, who interpreted the move as "a resounding slap around the face" which has dealt a very public blow to Israel's long-accepted policy of nuclear ambiguity.

Publicly, the Israel government has not criticised the US position but privately, officials expressed deep disappointment over the resolution, which Washington backed despite intensive Israeli efforts to block it.

According to the top-selling Yediot Aharonot daily, the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was "furious with the Obama administration for having failed to prevent the resolution from passing... and for choosing to support it."

"The American support for the resolution, after decades in which it supported Israel on this issue, came as a complete surprise," the paper said.

"In the secret talks that Netanyahu held with Obama's men... Israel was promised that the resolution would not focus on Israel and that if it did, the Americans would vote against."

The left-leaning Haaretz daily said Israel had been "sacrificed by the US on the altar of a successful conference" in what constituted "a diplomatic victory for Egypt" which has campaigned against Israel's nuclear arsenal.

Five years ago, the paper recalled, Obama's predecessor George W. Bush, refused to accept parts of a draft document calling on Israel to join the NPT and dismissed the idea of holding talks to create a nuclear-free Middle East -- even at the cost of the conference's failure.

The controversial resolution was passed just days ahead of a key meeting between Obama and Netanyahu aimed at restoring friendly ties between the two allies which had been soured over a dispute about Jewish settlements.

But the Maariv daily said that Obama's 'last minute' invitation for Netanyahu to visit the White House had clearly been planned with the NPT review conference in mind.

"It is reasonable to assume that the Americans knew they were going to deliver a blow to Israel's policy of nuclear ambiguity and that Obama wanted to try to minimize the damage," the paper said.

The move draws a line under a long-held "agreement" between Israel and Washington dating back to 1969 under which the Jewish state was permitted to keep silent on its country's nuclear potential while holding back from any nuclear test.

In return, Washington agreed not to exert or allow any pressure on Israel over its nuclear capabilities.

"It is an undeniably negative change to US policy" with regards to Israel's nuclear programme, said Eitan Gilboa, an analyst from Bar Ilan University near Tel Aviv.

Pointing to contradiction between Obama both applauding the resolution and criticising it for singling out Israel, Gilboa said Washington was "losing its leadership role because of the naive and unrealistic" outlook of its president.

The thing that strikes me most, maybe you too, about all these conflicts, is that there's always just a few, be them terrorists, activists or politicians, who control all the ****, but there's like 95% of just ordinary people who have no strong opinions either way, but who just want to get along with everyone else and get on with their own lives.

Whenever anyone with radical views rears his head, just kill him.

The Israelis are extremely arrogant toward anyone else - dont forget that to a Jew, all other humans are actually not human at all, but almost on the level of animals...thats where they get their attitude from...its instilled in them.

Why is it a surprise to anyone that when Israel suddenly and arbitrarily decides to increase its land area by taking over Palestinian homes and tossing the owners out on the street, the people get annoyed. Israel needs a good kick in the arse and told to stop its expansion, as that is the only wa the area will ever have a chance at peace. They have to give back the land they have stolen.

Being a Jew then isn't so much a freaky religion, as a business practice.

Before anyone assumes anything btw, I pretty much despise any group who attains to being a group (by any name) and who feels the need to force their own outlook on others.

I for one wouldn't miss Israel. Not Iran for that matter.

I have to agree. Surprised at your comments GG. While I would agree that Israelis always seem to display a certain level of arrogance, to expand that to all Jews is a little off the mark. I know Scottish Jews (no jokes about the ultimate stinginess here) who are opposed to many of Israel's actions over the years and who are appalled at this latest barbarism.

Back to the debate however...

As the day has worn on, as well as increasing condemnation of the commando raid, there has been a decreasing level of credibility in Israel's claims. What this morning were reports of their soldiers definitely being shot at, have by this evening diluted down to 'a report of gunfire'.

The fact that the ships were carrying aid, aid sorely needed when Israel only allows one quarter of what is needed every week, makes this even worse.

On this subject, all aid should be cancelled to Israel until they allow the required amount of aid in every week and stop all further settlement expansion by their own extremists.
