I like to write in my own casual style after the necktie comes off. I don't encourage students to use smilies in their essays either. Get the drift .. EDIT: Although I DID do a lesson on SMS abbreviations once. Is that terrible? There's more to learning a language than "By the book". That's why native speakers are preferred.
