It's a good question. The only thing I can think of is that Thailand's rather loose enforcement of intellectual property laws somehow changes the economics of bands playing here. For instance, some popular bands may not care about promoting their music in Thailand since most people will simply buy pirated copies of it. Whereas in Tokyo or Seoul they might see a better return on investment.

The older bands are simply looking to make money from the shows and think less about selling more albums.

Just a guess. Would love to hear someone with some industry experience take a shot at this one.

i would guess it's the cost .... although i've seen some decent relatively modern bands in thailand over the years, but u tend to only get a few touring each year.

You are bang on with this one Bill. Most tours do not make much money these days when you take into consideration lighting, transportation etc etc

Where the bands tend to make their cash is on merchandising at the gigs as well as the album sales. (and merchandise these days tends to be expensive)

Thailand therefore does no present itself as a particulalry lucrative market to many acts and will often be bypassed on any world tours.

What it maybe needs is some savvy promoters to bring in the mid level and rising new bands for gigs on stop offs on their way to Australia or other parts of Asia (same as started happening with dj's a few years back)

Well, i did see a lot of "street copy CDs or DVDs" in many countries like Turkey, China, Thailand and... Italy... But Thailand seems to be well organised for that: they have shops in all electronic markets when you order any copy of music, films or softwares, and you come back 20 min. later to buy it. So, in case of control, they just have no fake copy in the shop, just books where you can choose the one you desire. Very clever...

I also think the copy industry exists because the companies takes too much profit on CDs and DVDs... No need to buy houses of millions of dollars in LA for their boss or for the performers... If the prices where more democratic, nobody will take the risk to copy...

While I am no fan of the music labels I am also not a fan of the socialistic market you're describing. It doesn't matter what the people do with the money. Since when has the consumer cost of any product been set by whether or not you think the owner of the manufacturer needs to buy a nicer car or bigger house?

The copy industry exists because people don't want to pay the cost of the product and it's easy to duplicate. I mean, give any human being the choice of getting something at little or no cost or paying the market rate and . . . most people are going to choose free (or low cost).

The question of costings for a cd album is a bit of a minefield. People who oppose what they see as a high price per unit never think about all the hidden costs to make it; studio time, session musicians, engineers etc etc.

This will all depend on the deal a band has with their label. A record company advance will usually include many of these costs so the band in effect pays some of these expenses.

Smaller bands may not have all these opportunities but can take advantage of modern technology; selling their songs as MP3s, file sharing etc etc.

The profit margins in album sales are not as big as they used to be; much of this is down to the copy industry, and much is again down to tech advances.

Where both bands and record companies tend to make a lot of their cash now is what was previously regarded as 'peripheral' merchandising; t shirts, mouse mats, mugs, posters etc etc etc

You attend any concert these days and it is these items which the punters spend most cash on. On the Depeche Mode world tour last year t shirts were GBP 35, sweatshirts were GBP50. When you consider the unit cost to produce these items you can see it is a highly lucrative money spinner.

What has to be remembered is that the situation vis a vis Thailand, is not down to the bands, nor indeed the record companies. It is down to promoters. Perhaps some promoters see Thailand as a difficult market to work in. And perhaps the home grown promoters (outside the dance musci scene) do not possess the vision or indeed cahones to regularly bring big Western bands to the Kingdom.

i remember a conversation with someone who worked for a promoter a few years ago. they were trying to bring bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes here, but the bands wanted too much money. i suspect the demands were not out of line with what they'd command elsewhere. likewise, i'd expect that the Eagle gets paid what he gets elsewhere.

if you listen to mainstream Thai pop, it's pretty much all whiny ballads with screechy guitars, Thai pop songs are generally bastard scions of either the Eagle or the (ack) Scorpions, which would go a long way toward explaining why only dinosaur bands tour Thailand--there's not much audience for western non-fossils.

too bad they put in all the fluff....and the added expense

just give me the music & good quality sound

if I want the "show" I would go to an amusement park

the better performances I saw generally had the performers, their instuments, simple lighting and a stage...

most of the very best were in small clubs that held less than 300 people

 yeah I know ---- cranky old-timer!

How come the Eagles will perform again in BKK after their Farewell concert not too long ago?? ( we brought the VIP ticket that time)

or becoz im a muppet? lol

 ... I joined their Farewell concert also as I thought I should have memorized the world best band performance into my life and they did the good job very impressed me.

I giggled when I heard that the Eagles is coming back. But sorry, I took their Farewell concert as a farewell already I dont interest to see another farewell again. ( I think the organizer / promotor were run out of money and wanna make some more)

Anyway, a year later I went to see Maroon 5 concert, played on the same stage same location (while their 'Make me wonder' 'I wont go home without you' were hit hot top chart ) but totally diffirent charms to attract the audiences. I stopped follow Maroon5 since then.
