World's first 'ladyboy' airline!

Question

A new Thai airline is hiring transsexuals as flight attendants, aiming at a unique identity to set itself apart from competitors as it sets out for the skies.

Known as 'katoeys' or 'ladyboys,' transgenders and transsexuals have greater visibility in Thailand than in many other nations, holding mainstream jobs in a variety of fields.

They are especially common in cosmetics shops or health stores, which almost always have a ladyboy shop assistant.

PC Air, a charter airline set to start operations on Asian routes in April, originally planned only to hire male and female flight attendants.

But it changed its mind after receiving more than 100 job applications from transvestites and transsexuals.

Four were chosen, along with 19 female and 7 male flight attendants.

While the airline strives for equality, PC Air president Peter Chan, who chooses the transsexual cabin crew himself, said he needed to spend longer with interviews for such applicants.

'For male flight attendants, if I don't want to hire them, it's because of their attitude or their characters, like the way they walk and smile.

'When I knew that I got this job, I burst into tears because I'm very happy,' said 24-year-old Chayathisa Nakmai.

'I had sent many applications to different airlines.'

The airline said that the qualifications for the ladyboy flight attendants were the same as for female flight attendants, with the additional provisos that they be like women in how they walk and talk, and have a feminine voice and the right attitude.

Though there is very little discrimination against ladyboys in Thailand, they are not officially recognised as women and their identification cards will always say 'male'.

'For female flight attendants, if they have no patience and their character does not qualify, we won't hire them,' he added.

'For transsexuals, we can't just spend five or 10 minutes with them, we have to spend the whole day with them to make sure they have feminine characters.'

The airline said it may hire more flight attendants from the 'third gender' in the future since the Department of Civil Aviation has no objections.

Though excited by the opportunity, the transsexual flight attendants said they were aware they needed to prove themselves.

'People will keep their eyes on us... There will be more pressure,' said Dissanai Chitpraphachin, 23, who was crowned as Thailand's most beautiful transvestite in 2007.

'We have to prepare ourselves more than the women.'

The airline is initially set to fly to South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and China.

When I book an airline ticket, I want low-cost and good service.

And I want to arrive not dead.

I would happily be served by a gimp in a mask if I got a slightly larger seat to sit in.

a decent seat, decent food, plentiful supply of drinks, good in flight entertainment and i don't care who serves me .... although i would prefer it NOT to be a gimp in a mask !!

Just curious why the airline aimed at this market. I'm one of those people who believe that gays and katoeys don't have a choice. They are just who they are. So why not the Lazy Eye Airline? Why not focus on any particular characteristic like big boobs or hair color or whatever and creating an airline out of that too? I have ingrown toenails. Maybe they can create an airline aimed at my demographic.

i guess you aren't a ladyboy or you'd know.

an old TF friend of mine who happens to be a thai ladyboy and now lives in australia has tried to get jobs since he/she arrived there. but what sex do you put down in your application? male or female. if you put male down and you turn up in a dress, you're not likely to be hired. if you put female and you turn up not quite looking 100% female and with a deep voice, you're not likely to get the job also, especially if your birth certificate/licence etc says your a male.

you ask "Just curious why the airline aimed at this market." aimed at what market? flying people to where they want to go to? thats a market all airlines are in. the article says they are going to hire ladyboys. thats not a market, thats an employment strategy aimed at equality....thats what the article is about

But to be fair, the airline industry is overcrowded and highly competitive. Why you would aim at this market without having a compelling diference in your business model . . . wait, your difference is that you have ladyboy flight attendants. See how that works? The fact that they're promoting themselves in the press as having ladyboy flight attendants means they are targeting a certain type of customer. Otherwise they would just advertise cheap fares or the quality of the seats or the fact that they have better peanuts than Air Asia.

flight attendances are overrated, they are just waitresses in fancy outfits. they ain't saving your life for shit.

It makes me laugh that in Thailand it's considered a prestigious job that many women pay agencies to help them get the job. Everywhere else they recognize it for what it is, a glorified waitress. Then again, the flight attendants on British Airways are a bunch of old hags. Even the gay dudes.

lol many ppl said that, and I'm agree...

However, it's a dream job for many girls (in Thailand) cuz it's a chance to take trips all over the world.

So what's next? the airline for overweight flight attendances? I will prepare my resume'.
