... no one should be without.

1. Open Office

Perhaps not as shiny as MS Office, but every bit as good. Also fits excellently in with my life strategy to never, ever give Microsoft and the bastard Gates any of my money.

2. Avast Anti Virus

As good as anything you'd fork over some of your hard-earned for.

3. Ultimate Defrag (V.1)

0% fragmentation and choose where your files go too. Version 1 is free and beats any and all competition hands down.

4. GOM Player

Plays 99.99% of anything you throw at it. More features and options than you can shake a bucketful of sticks at.

5. CCleaner

Fuss free basic maintenance and cleanup.

6. Tracker PDF-XChange Viewer

Sick of Adobe's umpteen updates a week? This PDF viewer is even better than Foxit.

7. Stardock Object Dock

Give yourself another reason to laugh at Mac geeks by installing Stardock's Object Dock for that funky shortcut bar along the bottom of the screen.

8. Picasa

Organise all those home made porn pictures.

9. Skype

Keep in touch with the fambo with free video calls and chat.

Any other gems you know of?

I have skype and Avast, but this morning, Avast could not prevent a 3hr-long trojan horse (called itself System Tools) from getting itself into my system and infected the whole thingy within mins until no executable files could be run until I fork out money to 'System Tools' to clean up the virus (it even lied that Avast was infected to try to get me to stop the quick system virus scan once I realized I was infected!). My housemate quickly downloaded Malware for me and it did the trick.

So, I will say on top of Avast, free Malware and Spybot Search and Destroy (it found spyware Malware n Avast always could not detect).

Was thinking about it but as I have a re-usable Office 2007 pack now, it's ok!

2. Avast Anti Virus

As good as anything you'd fork over some of your hard-earned for.

Better than Avira AntiVir?

3. Ultimate Defrag (V.1)

0% fragmentation and choose where your files go too. Version 1 is free and beats any and all competition hands down.

Might be worth a try!

4. GOM Player

Plays 99.99% of anything you throw at it. More features and options than you can shake a bucketful of sticks at.

I have VLC and I am very happy with it

5. CCleaner

Fuss free basic maintenance and cleanup.

Sounds interesting!

6. Tracker PDF-XChange Viewer

Sick of Adobe's umpteen updates a week? This PDF viewer is even better than Foxit.

My Adobe doesn't want to update very often - and according to Secunia PSI*) it's up to date

7. Stardock Object Dock

Give yourself another reason to laugh at Mac geeks by installing Stardock's Object Dock for that funky shortcut bar along the bottom of the screen.

Maybe I'm too old for that... ;)

8. Picasa

Organise all those home made porn pictures.

I do it either with Microsoft picture manager (if it's only for batch renaming), IrfanView**) or Nero9

9. Skype

Keep in touch with the fambo with free video calls and chat.

Got yahoo Messenger and happy with it

Any other gems you know of?

*) 10. Secunia PSI or OSI: Checks your computer for outdated programs, missing security patches etc. I find it very useful!

**)11. IrfanView: Gives you a lot of options to work with your pics: Organizing them, renaming them and even convert them. Supports a huge amount of formats!

oh, firefox, but I suppose that is taken for granted these days.....

just DLd that stardock, I like it ....

and a quick word on OOffice. It is possible to call OO programs from the command line (in Linux). This makes it possible to create macros in say Excel (calc inOO), and call the macro on the comand line in a script. This is very handy for batch executions of the program. I had to convert 100s of excel files to text files recently, and did it over lunch with a script ...

I could "be without" all of those -- I do have most of them, though. ;)

The top two for me aren't on the list.

1. Firefox, from Mozilla. I won't touch Internet Exploder anymore.

--1a. NoScript extension for Firefox

--1b. AdBlockPlus extension for Firefox

2. ZoneAlarm from ZoneLabs. In my opinion, the best free firewall on the market.

Prevention being better than cure, avast should never have to find a virus or a "3 hour long trojan horse," whatever that is, if you use your computer more defensively.

Hey, I missed that Firefox was already mentioned. And you do command lines in linux? rather daunting for me. I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu now, because Korea is IE crazy. No IE, no internet (not that simple, but when the technician comes to set it up, he will never have seen linux or apple OS. guaranteed.)

If y'all haven't played with linux, give it a try. Latest releases are easy and fun to play around with. Get it here: Ubuntu... Click the Orange button!
