Thai General Election

So the Thai General Election is nearly upon you/us and I have a couple of questions.

I don’t profess to have a good (even average) understanding of the in and outs of the different parties and their stand points, but something that has become apparent is that Yingluck seems to be portrayed as Thaksins clone. So will she be the face and Thaksin be the puppet master behind her government should she get in?

Is Abhisit as clean as he makes out? I’m not talking about his hygiene. He seems to be as very little is said about him.

I’m not trying to stir up arguments, just a farang cruising for a bit of edimication on the subject.

Off the topic of parties: Do people really think that bellowing at people from a PA system stapped to a van at 8 in the morning will make people change their mind?

Wastemen.

Firstly, Khun Yingluk isn't portrayed as Thaksin's clone for nothing. He actually called her, 'My exact clone.' A more damning description I couldn't imagine.

Abhisit is clean inasmuch as he hasn't been caught being corrupt. However, he is seen as a bit ineffective as not much happened during the last two years. He is also blamed by the red shirts (unfairly in my opinion) for the bloodshed last year. From my perspective, nothing but martyrs would push the UDD/Peua Thai cause enough. So they continued to pressure the government to act and to use lethal force. When they finally did, Peua Thai could feign shock and horror.

It's not enough for PT to win more seats than the Democrats. They must win an outright majority - enough seats to form a government by themselves. Without that, the Democrats will be able to scrape together another coalition of smaller parties and continue to govern.

PT policies are populist and hinge mainly on giving credit to farmers (again) and bringing back Thaksin Shinawatra to be whitewashed of his conviction - which would lead to even MORE division amongst Thais.

What Peua Thai (and the Red shirts) don't understand is that every successful SE Asian economy moved away from an agricultural economy and more into manufacturing.

Currently agriculture provides 12% of Thailand's GDP, but uses a whopping 42% of its workforce. This hopeless inefficiency is a huge drain on resources as government's continue to prop up this sector with 'free money' schemes.

The way for Thailand to move forward is to improve education and switch from a labour intensive, inefficient system of food production to a more mechanised and productive system. This would free up hundreds of thousands of labourers to become productive in other areas. Also the populace needs to understand that continuous hand-outs are a terrible way to develop the country.

Well, we do see where the looks in the family went to :-)

I have a whole theory on this. I don't think it's accidental or due to poor governance. In fact, I think it's the work of brilliant governance.* I'm no GoodGhost but I do think there's a conspiracy to keep the masses uneducated and dependent on handouts. Think about who it benefits. And those same people are the same ones who run the handout programs and write the educational curriculum.

I mean, successful curriculum models exist. In fact, all of the rich people benefitting from cheap labor and an uneducated populace spend a nice chunk of the money they're making off the backs of poor people to send their children to receive exactly that kind of education. Meanwhile, they keep introducing endless failed changes to the current curriculum that sound good on paper but don't do anything to address the fundamental problems with the educational system thus producing the same failed result.

but uses a whopping 42% of its workforce.

I think you're wrong on that number. Based on my own guesstimates at least 42% of the workforce is involved in doing completely unnecessary tasks. Nowhere in the world does it take six people to ring up my purchase at a department store. At my old apartment they used to post 3 security guards on *each shift* to man a roadblock that was never put in the down position in the entire year I lived there. I'm not even sure who they work for since they didn't work for my apartment and they didn't work for the Four Seasons across the street so WTF?!?

Of course, I'm joking around a bit (but not too much) however, if Thailand's productivity was on par with other nations with a similar GDP they would have one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.

* By brilliant I don't mean good. I mean that they've been successful in pulling this off for so long and making so much money at it without anybody really figuring it out.

This is hypocrisy and falsehood from illegitimate Thai government, who is struggling to retain power. It's a lie, if only because that General Khatiyya was killed just before the start storming of Thai people's rebels camp. It was a logical step from government anti-people forces - to kill the rebel leader of the military, and then begin the assault. So to conduct military operations. First, for eliminating the military leader, to deprive the army (in this case simply Thai people) military strategist who was Savasdeepol. To facilitate further assault and sturm. The opposition had no reason to draw attention to the rally, as claimed Taugsuban, because attention to the opposition rally in Thailand (to be exact - to rally of Thai people) was enough at that time. The clumsy attempt from Taugsuban. However, this is understandable - after the election before him looms the prospect of the court.

Lying hypocrite who has support in the south, where is militants nest of Al-Qaeda.

I hope that the blood and tears of the Thai people will be avenged.

You do sort of realize that having a military leader of a supposedly peaceful protests are two completely opposing ideas, don't you?

Of course he doesn't. He sees the world through the blood stained glasses of Stalin's legacy and the blinkers of Beria's persecutions. He comes from, and is proud of, a nation which has oppressed its satellite states for decades, ruthlessly quashed the slightest sign of revolution or discord, practised semi genocide on Chechnya, been responsible for the upsurge in Islamic fundamentalism through their invasion of Afghanistan...yet can only see and criticise the 'atrocities' of other nations. He is an idiot, a retard and a fool.

It was an insurrection, and rebellion should have a military leader. Thanks to him it's uprising lasted so long. Military aid to the rebellion was justified by the fact that the government of Vejjajiva is illegitimate.

Incidentally, I have no illusions about the other leaders of Thai red - they encouraged people to fight, but they gave up after bloody fight. They have not the charismatic but Thaksin only. And Thaksin, as opposed to Gaddafi, was not left with his people. General Kattiyya was a true leader rebellion - he died fighting.

Listen to Farang. And what a difference you - who will be prime minister - Vejjajiva or Shinawatra? I do not think there will be any radical changes that apply to you. And I do not understand your excitement about this problem. If there will internal changes - it will deal mostly Thais and not Farang. This internally-Thai business. Foreign policy - I think it will remain as before. This is focus on the United States. It is unlikely that the U.S. would damage relations with Thailand - coz is Burma in fact beyond the control of united States. In Thailand are so-called "refugees"-Karen, who at a certain time are ready to begin the invasion of Burma. This invasion will be called "rebellion", as in Libya. So the U.S. is interested in cooperation with any Government of Thailand - will it Vejjajiva or Chinnavat (sister). And America will turn a blind eye to any violation of human rights in Thailand.

The activity of the UN and America against Thailand would depend on China's influence in Thailand. If the Thai-Chinese contacts will increase (regardless of who will head the government of Thailand) - then the U.S. will exert pressure. And these contacts exist at time of Vejjajiva, and there were at Chinnavat time. In this case it is possible to activate bombs in the form of Muslims in southern Thailand. While they were waiting for the order the owner. But if that will not stop Thailand from relations with China - will be used if the conflict with Cambodia. Then - the internal protests. In general, the existence of white Farang in Thailand does not depend on who will head the government, but from that - how will the Thai-Chinese contacts. I think so.

And while Thailand maintains subordinates alliance to the U.S., you will not in danger. It is not depend from Vejjajiva or sister Chinnavata.

I have no hatred for the United States or any other country. There is a certain dislike for politicians and U.S. policy. In the U.S. there are lots of normal, self-critical of people with whom I communicate on the forums. As a rule, the ode to American politics on amerikan forums not sing Native Americans (at least part of them), but immigrants from Third World countries, the so-called "new Americans".

Now about that Khatiyya fought in the American forces in Vietnam. Show me Thai army general, who has not fought in Vietnam, or who are not served the United States. It is logical, since Thailand since 1945 (after it stopped to be a puppet of Japan) is an American stooge. Any Thai general helped the United States. As with Prem, who fought against the rebels, as well as Chang-O-Cha. This was due to the foreign policy of Thailand. But now we're not talking about the past. Vietnam wins, defeated the enemy larger than Thailand - United States. Winners forgive losers.

My sympathies to Khatiye only due respect to the heroism and integrity that he displayed. It does not matter - on which side he fought ever.

Now - if you think I have anti-American illusions about the position of the red shirts. No, it's not, you're wrong. Thailand pro-American country, and I know that America has an effect as in the present government, and in the ranks of red shirts. As with politicians and the media, and lawyers. And naive to believe that foreign policy will change in case change regime of Thailand. That was when Thaksin (better contacts with Russia, Venezuela and Burma), but Thaksin charismatic, these persons are in the country once in several decades, and it does not apply to other leaders of the red shirts which have so far not proved to be bright.

My negative attitude towards the government Vejjajiva due to two factors: 1) his illegitimacy and shoot people, and 2) the illegal issuance of Bout. Everything. That is a purely formal negative, on the facts. This is not some ideological hatred. In general Vejjajiva no different from other Thai politicians.

And in this case, I wish him a defeat on a "friend of my enemy - my enemy," as well as on the basis of its illegitimacy and shooting to unarmed people. No more.

But that's why you all so zealously supporting Vejjajiva - I do not understand. In the event of his resignation, you will not in danger.
