New Camera Recommendations?

I think I'm ready to upgrade to a real camera. It's way too beautiful out here to use my iphone camera all the time, and I think I'll be very happy to have quality shots of Jasmine.

I was doing some research online and like the Canon Rebel T2i. Reviews seem great, and it's around the limit of what I'm willing to spend to get a decent camera. Do any of you Shutternuts have camera recommendations for the same price range or lower? I might hit the black friday sales for this bad boy.

i'm gonna buy a sony nex-c3 this weekend ... supposed to give DSLR (or very close to) quality pics on a much smaller body.

saw the camera last weekend and it"s a little beauty !! also cheaper than the nikon D5100

Yea, I was looking at the NEX-C5 a while back after seeing this video.

Does seem good and can't shoot in full 1080 too.

I have the Canon 550D DSLR. I think in the US it's also known as the T2i.

I love it. Your first choice is Canon vs. Nikon. Both are excellent and it's a matter of choice. But once you buy one you're pretty much locked in for life since you'll likely buy lenses and other accessories that you can use on your next camera when you upgrade. You'll end up having too much invested in those lenses and accessories to change brands.

unless u wanna go for the sony nex range or the olympus EP or the panasonic G/GF/GX range .... they r supposed to give at least entry level DSLR quality on a much smaller body (taking out the mirrors and using a DSLR quality sensor) .... nikon have just released their first offering in this range, but it's getting mixed reviews !!

i want something better than a compact, but can't see myself lugging around a DSLR ... also ... these cameras could be the way forward in the next few years !!

Same as FarangFarang. I use the Canon EOS Rebel T2i 550D. I love it. Like yourself I was using either a click and hope camera or my mobile and there are so many wonderful things to capture I decided to look into the DSLR market. The 550D came highly recommended as an entry level professional spec camera, I also consulted friends and a pro photographer. The camera also takes excellent HD video and the sounds not too bad either. My advice is to move away from auto mode and try different settings in different situations...if you are going to stick by auto you might be best looking at the smaller point and click models. If you are new (like me) to photography you might also want to check out Scott Kelby - he does some excellent tuition in laymans terms. He also has some videos on his website.

Good luck !

I bought a Sony NEX-3 earlier this year, does everything I want it to do and takes pretty good photos too, I have no complaints at all..........

I also looked at the NEX-5 which was my original choice, as far as Im aware the main difference is the video quality, the NEX-3 and NEX-5 use the same lens, have the same photo features etc, so I opted for the cheaper NEX-3.

Go with the latest/newest of whatever manufactorer you choose. The T3i from Canon, the D5100 from Nikon (A great camera, same sensor as the D7000), or the Sony NEX-5N. Always get the latest as it has the newest improvements in the software.

A great all-around setup is a D5100, with the 18mm-105mm VR lens to go with it. This covers most anything you want when shooting family, from close to medium distances in a quality you can enlarge to about 20x30 to put on the wall if you want.

i was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo tempted to buy this camera ..... but it's just too big to carry around !!!

it would either get left at home or lost on a drunken night out !!!

I need something semi portable. A few times bigger than the standard point and shoot is fine, but I'm not looking to buy the Nikon EB or anything.

go to a local camera shop .... check out the top end P&S (canon s95, pana LX5 etc) .... check out the compact systems (sony nex, pana and olympus .... the DSLRs (nikon d5100, canon T2i) etc .... see what "feels" right and which one u like .... select the model u want ...

then buy it on amazon !!!

Exactly, lol.

I held the T2i yesterday, but even that felt bulky. I've never had a real camera, so I doubt I'll feel comfortable with anything for less than a week.

Have to disagree. Specialist shops struggle to match sites like Amazon on a straight item for item price. BUT...they know this, so you are more likely to get a better deal with any accessories (bags, memory cards etc etc). Always worth negotiating with the shop to see what they will throw in for total cost. And don't be afraid to mention the basic camera price you saw online. The shop wants and needs your custom!
