Dear fellow TF members and guest readers, I'd like to bring this to your attention:

Adam Pickles, an English Teacher working in Thailand, was brutally attacked last week and left in a coma, fighting for his life.

'Our aim is to raise awareness of Adam's plight and raise funds to help cover his medical expenses and repatriation.'

I am not trying to be a jerk but the numbers quoted on the website seem a tad high. £70,000 just for medical repatriation? I did a quick Google search and the average is around £25,000. Perhaps £50,000 if there are complications which require that the airplane fly at sea level or some other sort of very specialized transportation.

Also, in the BBC article about this his mother says that the medical costs in Thailand are very high.

"Everything is really expensive over there."

With Thailand being one of the leading medical tourism destinations in the world, I'm surprised to hear someone saying that the cost of medical treatment is high. Medical treatment isn't cheap but I can only guess that the cost would be much, much, much higher if this happened elsewhere.

BTW, typical ICU costs, per day, in the US are around $10,000 - $20,000 USD. So, really, £2,000 is a bargain.

Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, just trying to point out some aspects to this appeal which might present some problems for some people. They should better explain why his repatriation is so expensive compared with other repatriations and-or phrase their comments like, "Yes, the ICU costs are much cheaper than they would be somewhere else, but they still run £2,000 a day."

Do you know Adam? Just wondering if there was any way we might get some clarification.

Nope, i don't know him personally, just helping to spread the word. Today in the Wakefield Express was written:

We need to fly Adam home

'But those close to the 40-year-old father-of-one fear they will need almost £100,000 to bring him home and they are calling on the government to do more to help.'

Well, if it's all legit, I wish them the best but I'm guessing a lot of people are going to be a little cynical considering the numbers being thrown around.

I wish the best for this guy, if he really is in the condition that is stated. But I am afraid that this once again is a kind of scam just in order to raise money for nothing. Sorry to say, but this is my two cents. For me, it seems to be a bit like this one:

Trust me... if You are sick... as in "really sick"... in Thailand... then 5,000,000.- THB is not going to get You very far, what I do not understand is : he is a teacher, so he should have an insurance from the school that employed him ?? as that is part of being an employee in Thailand... That insurance would pay the hospital bills, at least until the limit of coverage...

But I have to say that over the last 2,5 years, I, my insurance company and especially my wife and thai family has paid way over 5 mill for my hospital bills, and we are not finished paying yet, please make sure - if You live out here - that You are insured as well as possible...
