Marriage and Dowry...

I find the people who really have questions about sin sot are the ones who really don't understand the culture and probably shouldn't be getting married in the first place. But everyone has to make their own mistakes.

Sin sot is not dowry.

Sin sot is given from the groom to the bride's family.

Dowry is given from the girl's family to the groom.

Traditional chinese betrothal includes negotiation for betrothal gifts from the groom's family to the bride's and the dowry from the bride's family to the groom.

Practice is much different in India.

In Thailand it seems to be more chinese (middle class and up) where discussions of sin sot take place and a concrete number is arrived at but often enough in Thai settings, the bride's family returns the sin sot to the couple in the form of gifts. How well the bride's family trust the groom can be seen by whether the gifts are bought in the bride's name only or given to the couple. Lots of nuances too about the gifts given blah blah blah. But old biddy's will gossip about anything.

At the poorer levels of society it's more likely to go one way.
