LudwigVonMises
S_Plutonium, if I offended you, I'm sorry. I want you to know that I have nothing against your country (I have studied S. African history extensively, and am fascinated by your country), or against South Africans (again, I have many S. African friends, of all races). It was not meant to be a personal diss. Probably much of South Africa is safe, depending on where you live. I've never been there, though, so I can't judge. Where do you live? That might have something to do with why you haven't come across any crime. But again, if you took it personally, I apologize.
pr0nmaster
Moreover, I have many South African friends, black and whites, most of whom have either been victims of crime or know victims of crime. funny that...I LIVE here....so I think I just might know just one or 2 more south africans than you...and have a slighly better idea of whats going on .... to say MOST south africans have been victim to violent crime is pure and utter crap.....of the highest degree... I suppose of the 10 million tourists we get a year and the fact that the Odd extremely isolated case of anything happening to one (when it does...its huge news!!) .....oh that must just be propganda... you must get your info from on of those bitter apartheid era south africans who cant stand the fact that the blakc government is doing an excellent job and the country is thriving economically and siocially like never before.. ******* rascist neaderthal pricks.. khun_lung
When did you go to Somalia? Were you part of Operation Restore Hope? No, it was before that. I went to Somalia three times during the early 80's. There may be worse places on this planet, but the Somalis are incredibly poor and hostile to foreigners. Believe it or not, I went there for business. My Somali host would only allow me to eat my meals at the American Embassy compound for my own safety. Any other times he personally escorted me. As a footnote, I did serve in the US Army but never saw combat. I only saw hostilities after I traded in my Army uniform for a suit and tie! zeusbheld
crime statistics are interesting--not because they are indicative of how likely you are to have trouble somewhere. they are not. they are interesting for how the data is cut. for instance, if you look at crime statistics in any major city you will see that there are a certain number of murders. my god! it sounds horrific. but it's kinda a parts per million thing isnt it? how many people live there? what part of the city did these happen in? someone like robbie36 can give you the rundown on, for example, murder stats vs death rates, but i'm too lazy to look up numbers at the moment. suffice to say, when i lived in new york city at a time when it allegedly was rife with crime, i never got mugged. when i visited the small (allegedly crime free) town where i grew up, i got mugged once. short version on crime stats, is a) it isnt always clear what they are really saying, and good news with no events bores people to death, so the media only report shocking, horrific stuff. why? ideological bias? NAH. they want to keep their jobs. if nobody watches, then they'll be out of work. think about it: how many people will tune into: YOU COULD DIE TODAY FROM BIRD FLU? and then compare: how many will tune into NOTHING HAPPENED IN THE QUIET LAND OF HAPPY SAFE PEOPLE? A) I never said "most" South Africans were victims. I said "most" that I know. None of the South Africans I know are racist. Most supported the Progressive Party (led by Helen Suzman), which was far from racist.
LudwigVonMises
if you not part of the future...get the f*ck out of the way... I agree with that. For what it's worth (not worth much, as I've never been there) I think the new government is doing a great job. Democratizing a country that's been ruled by a minority for 300+ years, and trying to equalize things, is a hell of a task, and though there's still a long way to go, the new government is making excellent progress. Funny, one of the few places I have little interest in returning to is Egypt. Nothing dangerous happened to me. What pissed me off was the extent to which every single Egyptian I dealt with seemed to see me as nothing but a dollar sign. (Only one exception, a journalist with whom I went out for dinner.) People talk about some of the locals in parts of Thailand being jaded by tourism, but it's nowhere near the same level as in Egypt. I was damn happy to leave, to get to much friendlier places like Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. I've also had extremely positive experience in Iran. I've been mugged in Amsterdam, robbed in the USA, mugged in eastern Turkey, but I'd go back to Turkey in a minute. I'll go back to the Netherlands and the USA too, but I can think of more interesting places that I'd rather go. --Ling

LudwigVonMises
Philippines....now thats a country i had some bother in a few times.Being the world HQ of coup' d'etats its quite easy for curious types to end up being a bit of target practice for bored rebels.Still ..it's got some magical beaches there and is highly underrated.I think its reputation scares people off... or perhaps its those darn pain-in-the-derriere Peace Corps . I'd really love to visit the Philippines. The people there are among the friendliest in the world.

ling_dtua_khaao
The Guinness World Records site didn't mention the category of most coups, but I did learn that Thailand has the longest reigning monarch, the current King. I also learned that Latvia has the largest shortage of men, so all you desperate and lonely guys on TF would be far better served chatting up the Latvian girls or booking a ticket to Riga. Similarly, the United Arab Emirates has a substantial shortage of women, so you girls on TF will have your best chances of finding a rich boyfriend/husband there. --Ling
DJTX
We often hear people say "I would never to go 'that' country. It's too dangerous". Most times these are misinformed individuals who got their information from someone who knows someone who knows someone... Or, they saw an incident on the news (the news that is simply trying to generate ratings). Yes, there are times you wouldn't, and shouldn't, go to certain places in the world - war, disease, natural disaster, etc, etc. And yes there are parts of every country in the world you should not go to. You wouldn't walk down a dark alley in Newark New Jersey at night. Neither would you walk down a dark alley in Johannesburg South Africa. Or a dark alley in London England, or Paris France. OR Bangkok... There are probably a lot of reasons you would not want to go to a country but 'crime' 'normally' isn't one (for the most part). Just use your common sense as you do at home... zeusbheld
i'd love to visit every country if i can, but those ones that still have conflicts within their country are down at the bottom of my list. agree. i'd like to visit the countries where i'm least likely to be killed first. that way, if i get killed further down the list, i'll still have visited a lot of interesting countries. I'm pretty sure it's Paraguay that's had the most coups, though. Aside from Stroessner's 35-year dictatorship and the 16 years since the coup that ousted him, Paraguay's history has almost always been coup after coup after coup after (you get the idea). Thailand's political history since 1932 is like that too. Coup, coup, coup. Most bloodless and just a case of one general forcing another out of the high seat. The coups that are remembered are the significant, bloody ones since 1970s. Just because a place has a conflict doesn't mean it has a conflict all over. I've been through several places like that. On the other hand, back when Cambodia had opened up but it was only safe to visit Phnom Penh and Angkor, I wasn't interested, didn't want to go there just to brag that I'd been. I was happy enough to wait until it was safer to have more of a look around. --Ling

Buttie
Been to a few dodgy places in my time. Would not be in a rush to visit Somalia though. marsgold
On the first part, it have some countries that I have visited a day and that I don't want to visit for the moment. The list is short : -USA: Because I need to change my passport to go there and it is quite expensive! -France: Radar and policeman are a pain in the ass to anyone who own a car. -Hongria: Until you know people I find them totally unfriendly so I will wait to know someone from there before to go again. But I have see many beautiful and interesting things there. On the other part, it have the countries that most people don't want to visit for safety reasons like IRAK, SOMALIA,NORTH KOREA, ect... But it is something who can change with the time and as someone said, better to visit first the countries who are safe, like that I can visit much more. If it doesn't kill you, it'll make a great story over a few drinks some time later. Would avoid Iraq at the mo, though ...
