Now that Pokemon Go is available in Thailand it is only a matter of time before stories begin rolling in about death, injuries, and random acts of stupidity resulting from people playing the game.  I mean, what could go wrong with a game where players can lure other players to locations and where staring into your phone while ignoring everything else going on around you?

This discussion thread is being devoted to capturing those news stories.

Catch them all!

Officials Want Pokemon Go Developer to Restrict Pokestops

Quote

After weeks being widely misrepresented as the company bringing Pokemon Go to Thailand, True Corp. has been summoned by the authorities for a meeting Tuesday to carry their concerns to the developer.

Quote

Seeming to know little about the subject, Thailand’s telecom regulators said Monday they’ll ask the conglomerate to take a message to the developer of the ferociously popular location-based game: Keep your “monsters” out of our sensitive areas.

Quote

Takorn didn’t seem particularly well-informed about the game, its workings or partnerships.

Quote

Despite lacking knowledge on the subject, Takorn said the phenomenon may not be a good fit for Thailand.

Quote

“The developer may think it’s fine in their country, but it needs to be adjusted when arriving here,” said Takorn, expressing his belief the locations used in the game were chosen through Google Maps by Japanese gaming company Nintendo, Co. Ltd. “For example, our sidewalks are a lot smaller compared to Japan.”

The game’s developer, Niantic, Inc., is in San Francisco.

Pokemon no-go in Thailand

Great quotes from this article:

“As for entering Buddhist Monasteries or historic sites to catch the [Pokemon] dolls [sic], I know Thai people have the common sense to know what is proper and what it is not,” he said.

Thailand’s Culture Minister has warned people against playing Pokemon Go, especially in religious and historic sites while the Tourism and Sports ministry is seeking to use the game to promote the very same.

Thailand going bananas for Pokémon Go!

Quote

In latest developments an online lawyers’ page has warned drivers to be on the lookout for people dashing across roads staring obliviously at their phones.

The “Khoo Jai” page has warned that according to section 32 of the Thai Highway Code the onus of responsibility falls on drivers to look out for pedestrians.

Even if those pedestrians are acting irresponsibly it seems.

The law allows for a ten year prison sentence for a driver killing a pedestrian with three and one year sentences for pedestrians injured badly or slightly.

Hunters of Pokémon need to stare at their phones constantly to avoid missing their cartoon targets, the lawyers noted adding that it was not just kids that drivers need to look out for – adults are playing the game as much as anyone.

Police Colonel Supiranat Sattathanachaipat, a deputy metropolitan police chief, said Bangkok's Bang Khunthien Police Station had been informed of a suspicious "Poke Stop" (a place where Pokemon can be located) in its jurisdiction on Sunday night near Ekachai Road. There, unscrupulous Pokemon players had released a lure module to attract players, he said.

Once police arrived at the scene, a group up to eight adults ran away as they were understood to be waiting for unsuspecting Pokemon players to catch monsters in the remote area.

Police ordered to load Pokémon Go on their phones to help protect public!

Quote

Region 9 top brass responsible for Bangkok have ordered officers throughout the capital to load Pokémon Go on their phones and find out what it is all about.

They hope this will help them identify potential threats to the public and increase security.

Officers have been told to watch out for criminals who might take advantage of people playing the game in secluded areas. Theft and attack could occur – as it has abroad – as opportunistic criminals find new ways to break the law.

So if you have trouble getting help from the police in Region 9, you now know why.

Pokemon Go nannies for hire

Quote

After launching the app in Thailand, the game was an instant hit and people went crazy. Some people immediately swooped in on the opportunity to make money off of the game by offering ‘trainers’ to level up their character for them in exchange for money. You can mostly find these poke nannies on facebook, such as PokemonGoLevelupThailand. Depending on what level you want your character to be, standard prices range from THB100 to THB1,000 but can go much higher depending on your poke needs.
