Question

what was it like when you first moved to thailand? or a country in which people dont speak much english.

were you nervous?afraid of having no job? or friends in common? - maybe we should talk about some other places besides thailand -- english teachers everywhere (no offence) and there is thailandfriends to make friends before coming here anyway...

I moved to Thailand after having lived for a few years in India, and I found Thailand dreadfully bland and boring by comparison! My first sojourn in Thailand lasted all but 9 days, after which I fled back to the familiarity and excitement of India.

I HAD to go back to Thailand for work-related reasons though, and on my second trip I discovered the Siamese female species, and I've never looked back!

The language was an incredible hurdle, though (we're talking about the time of around 1990 here). Hardly anyone spoke English then, and though I'm normally very good at picking up languages (I speak half a dozen), it took me 6 months to string a decent Thai sentence together.

Those days are past now, and I get a huge culture shock when I travel to the country of my birth. I've lived about half my life outside home country, and I guess I'm neither here nor there. Not that I care a damn ...
