anenglishman
Arriving at the Gare du Nord from Geneva, taking a bike through Place de la Concorde and up the Champs Elysees......makes my heart quiver. City of romance, city of dreams, city of beauty, city of men....pity about the Parisians. Got to be in my top 5 cities but Rome and Barcelona still win for me in Europe. alexanderdream
as a french, i'd say : good thing : everything (monuments, museums, sightseeings, restaurants, shops, theatres, cinemas - there's no city in the world with so many movie theaters -) / bad thing : the parisian people (i was born in paris suburbs and lived there for 33 years) and the expensive cost of living. Guest
the origin of the word "french fries" is supposed to come from the World War 1. American and English soldiers had eaten this meal with the belgium army who speaks french. That's why for american and english it's supposed to be french. Cause american and english thought to have eaten with french people ? Ok, my explaination is not clear but it's all what i have found on a website. French fries are supposed to be from belgium

The Belgiun called it Frites The french call it frites too But the fact is ..Franch fries is from Belgium How come ....It's called FRANCH fries  perhaps cause of tourists who thought it was french and not from belgium ? I heard this weird story about the Americans going through France in WW II. They crossed the border with Belgium without knowing it and then they bought some fries to eat. Because in the south of Belgium most ppl mainly speak French, the Americans thought they were still in France and called it French fries. I don't know if this story is true, but it's a nice one. PS In French they r called 'frites' (also in Walloon), in Flanders they say ''fritten' and in Holland they say 'patat frit' or 'frieten'. But forget about the last one . to make good 'fritten' take first old, big potatoes. For excellent 'Belgian fries' the potatoes have to be quite dry and not too juicy anymore. Bake them 2 times, one time on 150 - 160 C to get them done. The second time shortly on 170 - 180 C to get them brown and crispy. Try too use the fat of ox's to get the best result.
