Life as a younger guy in thailand - First forum post

I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself to the forum as I will be posting frequently in the future. My name is Toby Vise and I'm a 25 year old american who has decided to make the big move. I'll be in Bangkok on Sept 23rd.

One of my biggest questions before my first visit to thailand last year was in regards to what it's like being a younger foreign guy in the land of smiles. I noticed when I joined a year ago there wasnt very much information on the topic. I kinda felt like I was walking into a tunnel without a torch. With all due respect to the more mature generation, I didnt think I was getting the need-to-know information about the party\nightlife scene for someone who is not in thailand for holiday\work\sex\retirement\exile. It's alot different being a young guy that lives out there versus being on the tourist end of things. There's so much about the pure vibrance of the culture that really gets overlooked when you are studying it with a magnifying glass, as opposed to living in it first hand.

I'm no self-proclaimed guru, but if anyone has any questions about what the life is like for a younger guy(the light and the dark side), what kind of work you can do that will pay decent money, where to go and how to party it up in thailand proper, i'd be happy to help out. Let me know what I can do for the forum. I don't know much about living in BKK except for the club scene, but I spent ALOT of time in Samui and Phuket - Just hit me up if you have questions.

Nice to meet everyone!

Toby,

- "Younger foreign guy"??? I've always thought that the it isn't the age. It's how you take the age. I've seen guy's younger than you and they are ready to be burried and also seen men that are 60 who are like 30 (mean the good way).

- "what kind of work you can do"??? Nothing legaly, if you don't start a company or have friends.

- "decent money"??? How much is it?

Nice to meet you Toby

ps. let's give Toby a chance ;)

ok, let's see if I can make an another question clearing up...

If I were a young foreign professional, working in not-normal-local but not on full expat salary package either, so lets say with 50 - 60 000 bahts a month. If I would like to go out on some weekends and enjoy my life...where would I go as Suk 11 bars and many others are actually hi-so expensive places to go to. And with the local salary, they would not be places I would go at home either in thinkin' things in comparative salaries. But then one runs to the problem, as I understand: Bangkok lacks middleprices western style night life. There is the places where thai life bands play and music is thai, without dancing, if you are and want to stay "western"...:) Bangkok ain't no SG nor Hong Kong. :-(

It is quite often mentioned as the sum that without less, unless u really are a teacher, and want to keep part of your western habbits (eat western food from home etc), that's the amount u could consider moving out from your home to Thailand for work. Remember that expats who are sent to thailand get atleast 2,5 times more than that (according to for exmaple one Finnish study)...(So we are talking about jobs in economics and engineering, IT)

Woa, you guys are relentless! lol, this will be fun.

"for someone who is not in thailand for holiday\work\sex\retirement\exile"

Isnt it possible just to hang your hat somewhere without doing anything of any importance? Afterall, i'm too young to retire, but why waste a moment in such a wonderful place working your asses off teaching english and such?

In samui and phuket i sold timeshare - 4 days a week with easy hours that facilitate late nights. It pays very well, if you are the kind of person that others can stomach being around for a couple hours. As far as other high paying jobs, selling real estate to farangs also seems to be a healthy niche if your looking for the 100k+ spectrum.

BTW, what's up with most of you being so apprehensive? I was simply trying to introduce myself on the forums and shed some light on a couple topics that i may be of some use on.

Personal adds that indicate wealth, youth and being a good time boy are usually reserved for journals and profiles, but hey your so smoooth I figure no ones noticed.

How original. And this is just a taster of your worldly knowledge is it?

We experimented with "**** on a fish" already, not only were they of no ******* use the fish hated them.

Timeshare salesmen - the scum of the earth.

Honestly, I have had some sort of bad image of time share ppl too. Can anyone give good word of their business? Second group: boiler room folks. Pretty damn sure there is guys from that trade here too. And making damn good money too out of it.
