She is currently in a Sudanese jail cell.

WTF ? A rape victim is sent to jail and whipped for being alone with a man, now a teacher is under the threat of being lashed for the actions of her students.......

There is something seriously wrong with the fundamentals of any religion that allows this practice.

If there is a God, no way will he allow this practice in his name.

I hope you all burn.

I saw this on the BBC news last night.

Shouldn't it be the children who are lashed? After all, THEY are the ones who chose the name. Or maybe the children didn't like their teacher and they were clever enough to know that they could get rid of her like this.

Muslims are not winning themselves any friends by doing such stupid things. You almost get the feeling that they are looking to make enemies.

Here is the complete article from the BBC website.

And by the way, don't Muslims name their children Mohammed? Shouldn't that be considered blasphemous?

'Muhammad' teddy teacher arrested

Gillian Gibbons is described as "a talented and able teacher "

A British schoolteacher has been arrested in Sudan accused of insulting Islam's Prophet, after she allowed her pupils to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, said she made an "innocent mistake" by letting the six and seven-year-olds choose the name.

Ms Gibbons was arrested after several parents made complaints.

The BBC has learned the charge could lead to six months in jail, 40 lashes or a fine.

Officials from the British embassy in Khartoum are expected to visit Ms Gibbons in custody later.

"We are in contact with the authorities here and they have visited the teacher and she is in a good condition," an embassy spokesman said.

The spokesman said the naming of the teddy happened months ago and was chosen by the children because it is a common name in the country.

"This happened in September and the parents did not have a problem with it," he said.

'Very sensitive'

The school has been closed until January for fear of reprisals.

Fellow teachers at Khartoum's Unity High School told Reuters news agency they feared for Ms Gibbons' safety after receiving reports that men had started gathering outside the police station where she was being held.

The school's director, Robert Boulos, said: "This is a very sensitive issue. We are very worried about her safety.

"This was a completely innocent mistake. Miss Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam."

Mr Boulos said Ms Gibbons was following a British national curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and this year's topic was the bear.

Ms Gibbons, who joined the school in August, asked a seven-year-old girl to bring in her teddy bear and asked the class to pick names for it, he said.

"They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad," Mr Boulos said, adding that she then had the children vote on a name.

Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad as their favourite name.

Mr Boulos said each child was then allowed to take the bear home at weekends and told to write a diary about what they did with it.

He said the children's entries were collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover and a message which read, "My name is Muhammad."

Book seized

The bear itself was not marked or labelled with the name in any way, he added.

It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammad.

Mr Boulos said Ms Gibbons was arrested on Sunday at her home inside the school premises after a number of parents complained to Sudan's Ministry of Education.

I know Gillian and she would never have meant it as an insult. I was just impressed that she got them to vote

He said police had seized the book and asked to interview the girl who owned the bear.

The country's state-controlled Sudanese Media Centre reported that charges were being prepared "under article 125 of the criminal law" which covers insults against faith and religion.

No-one at the ministries of education or justice was available for comment.

Mr Boulos told the BBC he was confident she would not face a jail sentence.

One Muslim teacher at the independent school for Christian and Muslim children, who has a child in Ms Gibbons' class, said she had not found the project offensive.

"I know Gillian and she would never have meant it as an insult. I was just impressed that she got them to vote," the teacher said.

In Liverpool, a family spokeswoman said Ms Gibbons' grown children, John and Jessica - both believed to be in their 20s - were not commenting on her arrest.

Gillian Gibbons had been working in Khartoum since August

"I have spoken with her children and they do not want to say anything and aggravate the situation over there," she said.

Rick Widdowson the headteacher of Garston Church of England Primary School, where Gillian worked for ten years, added: "We are an Anglican school and I know for a fact that Gillian would not do anything to offend followers of any faith.

"Certainly she is also very worldly wise and she is obviously aware of the sensitivities around Islam."

Cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad printed in several European newspapers sparked violent protests around the world in 2006.

And from the NY Times

A British primary school teacher arrested in Sudan faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy after letting her class of 7-year-olds name a teddy bear Muhammad.

Gillian Gibbons, 54, from Liverpool, was arrested at at Khartoum's Unity High School yesterday, and accused of insulting the Prophet of Islam.

Her colleagues said that they feared for her safety after reports that groups of young men had gathered outside the Khartoum police station where she was taken and were shouting death threats.

The Unity school is a Christian-run but multi-racial and co-educational private school that is popular with Sudanese professionals and expatriate workers.

Bishop Ezekiel Kondo, chairman of the school council, told The Times that the school was in dispute with authorities over taxes, and suggested that Gibbons, who arrived in Khartoum in August, may have been caught up in that.

"The thing may be very simple but there are people who are trying to make it bigger. It's a kind of blackmail," he said.

Teachers at the school, in central Khartoum, a mile from the Nile River, said that Gibbons had made an innocent mistake by letting her pupils choose their favorite name for the toy as part of a school project.

Robert Boulos, the Unity director, said Gibbons was following a British National Curriculum course designed to teach young pupils about animals and their habitats. This year?s animal was the bear.

In September, she asked a girl to bring in her teddy bear to help the class focus and then asked the children to name the toy.

?They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad. Then she explained what it meant to vote and asked them to choose the name,? Boulos said.

Twenty out of the 23 children chose Muhammad. Each child was allowed to take the bear home for weekends and asked to keep a diary about what they did with the toy. Each entry was collected in a book with a picture of the bear on the cover, next to the message "My name is Muhammad."

Boulos said that the bear itself was not marked or labeled with the name in any way, adding that Sudanese police had now seized the book and asked to interview the 7-year-old girl who brought in the bear.

He said that he had decided to close down the school until January for fear of reprisals in Sudan?s predominantly Muslim capital.

?This is a very sensitive issue. We are very worried about her safety,? he said. ?This was a completely innocent mistake. Ms. Gibbons would have never wanted to insult Islam.?

The British Embassy in Khartoum said that it was still unclear whether Gibbons had been charged formally. ?We are following it up with the authorities and trying to meet her in person,? it said.

Under Sudan's Sharia law, blasphemy could attract a large fine, 40 lashes or a jail term of up to six months.

I dont think its such a big deal .

When I was 7 years old I got the strap ( belt ) from the principal just for laughing constantly in the classroom . I know the strap isn't as harsh as a lashing but he did hit me about 20 times .

The point I want to make is ; at the time it was considered normal , now the principal would be charged with child abuse . So Sudan is a Country that is more backwards and primitive than most . So what .

You dont need to go far back in time to find some of our laws that would belong in the same basket of being barbaric and primitive .

Of course God won't lift a finger in either direction so it's probably up to the UK and the US to make sure it happens, not the lashing, just the burning.

Don't forget to enjoy the high moral ground guys.

Burning's vastly superior, ethically speaking.

........Everybody looks over the neighbour's fence and mocks their vegetables....

......obviously the story about the "lashings" is a hard story......do we know if she actually got them? It would be good to get a link and see the full story...

......A 19 year old from Manchester was given the death sentence in Thailand about 4 years ago...........he didn't get it......he got worse..

...Is she going to get the "lashings?"..........or is it propaganda....in a world where every British newspaper feels inclined to demonize any country outside of it's "Sceptered Isle".

.....Does everybody really feel comfortable criticising Islam like this? Are you not doing exactly what you are criticising, by vehemently criticising what you think isn't right?

...I'm a lover of only one religion...'my family, my friends and my life'

.........but isn't it a bit hypocritical to say what's been said as if your **** doesn't stink?

Whatever you say does not deter from the fact this lady, as of this moment is in a Sudanese jail because of someone's weak-minded, out of date religious beliefs. I think mohammed would be more insulted by causing a 54 year old woman pain and distress than by having a teddy named after him.

You can mouth all you want, calling me an idiot, am i supposed to be impressed at your debating prowess ?

I think I'm old enough and educated enough to form my own opinion without having the thinking done for me by an English rag.

Let me reiterate.....I HOPE THEY FCUKING BURN....

All they are doing now is holding the world to ransom with THEIR beliefs. People TOO scared to have even a reasonable debate without the threat of violence or worse.....

Actually Dan mate, I think that's quoting.

I think paraphrasing might run more along the lines of...

"Opinions? Assholes. We all got em."

(Fancy nipping round to Jackie's?)

wouldn't you leave the quote marks off if you are paraphrasing? i wouldn't know for sure, though, as i'm not an english teacher.

Rules are broken all the time. Haven't listened to any native speakers recently?

Live a little mate. Maybe capitalise once or twice. You might find you like it.

what are you doing, peeing on the pedant tree? are you the only allowed near it?

Danny i don't think anybody is saying she deserves it on here and i'm sure most decent minded, educated muslims wouldn't say she deserves it either. i've worked and socialised with muslims both here and in sri lanka (buddhist countries with muslim minorities) and they ain't that much different from us in what they want from life. i would also sugest that a lot of muslims don't want to live under strict sharia law and would prefer their countries to have a more relaxed and liberal regime, but with the current leaders they have that will take time.

and for ppl who say why can't they change things in their own countries, how could britain, spain and italy (as 3 examples) send troops to iraq when the over whelming majority of the ppl were against it !!! democracy anyone ???

nowhere did i say the old broad deserves this. what i am saying is that what she is caught up in has NOTHING to do with religion. religion is being used on both sides to grind other axes

1)by some Sudanese to get at the school for SOME DISPUTE OVER MONEY

2)by people that want to lead gullible Gussies to war and need to make Muslims look bad to do it... IN ORDER TO MAKE MONEY

DANNYBOY, you take the bait hook line and sinker. U SUCKER!!!

keeping the musician formerly known as Cat Stevens out of amerikkka as a "security risk"... that made sense?

and if youre so passionate about BURNING Muslims, get yor ass on over there and get your hands dirty. F**IN EASY to talk about it. the criminal/insane thing is that it is being done in your name, AS WE SPEAK, to REAL PEOPLE, REAL WOMEN AND CHILDREN... EVERY F**IN DAY

because of MUSHEAD BRAINDEAD DONKEYS that are happy to open their mouths and swallow what ever is fed them... long as it's wrapped in a flag with a crucifix on top.
