CocoaBrotha
Really....REALLY f**ked up anime movie!
ling_dtua_khaao
Someone mentioned Wicked City. The Japanese animated version was pretty cool. There was also a live action HK version which was totally hilarious, unintentionally. I find the level of story-telling in anime is not much different from typical (live action) North American TV. Most of it is crap. Some of it is enjoyable as entertainment for the moment, and that's where people's tastes differ a lot. For example, some people enjoy the TV sitcom Friends. I on the other hand enjoy the anime One Piece. In my mind, they're not terribly different taken as entertainment vehicles. As with TV, anime has its classics which are a cut above the rest. Finally, there's little that is truly timeless. I find it funny when some people here balk at anime as being cartoons, or for kids, and at the same time they have no problems with watching the latest Hollywood action movies. There was a similar phenomenon when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a big hit here: people finding the (beautifully done) fight scenes on tree tops and with flying to be ridiculous, and yet these same people have no complaints watching James Bond or Indiana Jones battling a foe on the wings of an airplane in mid-flight, or have no problem finding it believable that Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise (etc.) could survive being shot at with thousands of rounds unscathed, while managing to do away with all of his foes. Just different ideas of what is "acceptable" fantasy I guess. If the bulk of Hollywood movies are going to continue to be as "cartoonish" as they always have been, why bother with second rate substitutes, when you can watch the real thing? Cartoons. But not necessarily for kids, and, at their best, rich visually and in content, in ways that are not possible in live action films. Spirited Away definitely comes to mind (and that one's enjoyable both for kids and adults). Lately I've found that the best comedies in North America have generally been the animated ones. They seem to be able to get away with more thematically than sitcoms. All in the Family, for example, would never be produced as a sitcom today, but would show up on the Comedy channel in animated form. --Ling
ling_dtua_khaao
there was a manga i liked as a kid though--"lone wolf and cub", about a ronin who carries his kid on his back--if anyone knows where i can get some issues of this in bangers, do holler. doesn't have to be in english i just look at the pictures anyway. Zeus you wanted to know about Lone Wolf and Cub. I have the entire manga (good English translation, the one by Dark Horse Comics I think) burned onto DVD if you want it. I can burn you a copy and mail it to you. Of course, you'll be reading it on screen and not in lovely paper form. As I don't doubt you know, it was also made into a series of six movies (got them also, poor quality, only worth watching on a computer screen), and later, a (live action) television series (got two of three seasons, also only good for watching on a small screen). I don't know that it's ever been made into anime - I think I would have heard of it if it had - but instead it has inspired various animes. It has been remade more recently into more films and TV series. Here's a page of more info. I first came across the original TV series as a teenager, late at night on Toronto's new multicultural TV station. It was broadcast subtitled, under the name The Iron Samurai. <warning type="hearsay_for_which_i_can_no_longer_find_a_reference"> Apparently the main character Ogami Itto is (very loosely) based on a historical person. This man survived, quite amazingly, over a thousand fights. When asked to explain his extraordinary success in one-on-one battle, he said that he would judge the skill of his opponent. If the opponent seemed strong, he'd run, or throw a sword at the guy and run. If the opponent seemed weaker, he'd clash to force the opponent back, then throw his sword into him. </warning> LOL. Not quite the image of samurai we have these days from consuming popularizations of Japanese history. But if true, it's not surprising he used such methods to survive. The classic katana, as worn during the Tokugawa period typically by armourless samurai, is essentially an extremely strong, fairly light, and approximately 26- to 28-inch razor blade plus handle designed for the sole purpose of separating human flesh. If you want to survive a fight, you have to be sure your opponent doesn't connect at all. First hit wins. --Ling

Not always about 'that'. (I guess.) Never watched Miyazaki movie? Loburt
Haven't seen any Miyazaki on the porn websites. Looked at the link. Noticed this in the synopsis: "Chihiro and her liminal journey through the realm of the bathhouse of the gods. A spoiled child, forced into the fantastic world, Chihiro becomes completely separated from everything she has known and must find her way back into reality. Chihiro?s experience in the alternate world, frequently compared to Lewis Carroll?s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, ..." Bath house of the gods? I wonder what goes on in there...  And Lewis Carroll ... well we all know about him and little school girls now, don't we? JTHM
Now that all the previous posts cover my favourites as well, I just want to point out that Samurai Executioner Path of the Assassin by the same people behind Lone Wolf and Cub (Kazuo Koike / Goseki Kojima) are also worth checking out. The two latest titles by Kazuo; Lady Snowblood & Colour of Rage; I did not like at all, but hey, that's just me. Kite aka A Kite aka Kaito is also great fun, but highly explicit and violent, so not for the squirmish..
