What's your impression about Australia?

Looking at the trailers for the new Baz Luhrmann movie 'Australia', I wonder what people think of Australia these days.

For those been there on holiday, I know they will always have a lasting impression, but it would take a life time to really 'know' the country, the people and to see and experience all there is.

But what about those who have never been there. What is your impression or image you have of the country, the people or the life there?

here's the link to the movie trailer for those who haven't seen it yet.

I was there about 12-13 yrs ago for my English summer class with a home stay in Brisbane. It was Easter Break so we decided to go to Sydney for a few days. On the way back the bus was broken down. And there it was, somewhere on the road between Sydney & Brisbane, the most beautiful moon that i've ever seen in my life... The biggest shiniest moon right above our heads in the middle of nowhere... Now, I'm thinking how cool it could be if it was me and my partner in the convertible car, the reality was we were in the bus full of upset ppl, 10 Thai student singing Thai songs and I guess that's pretty much annoying for the Australians in there :P...

Another thing was the accent!!

OMG!!!

one morning i woke up and the mother of my home stay asked me

Mother: Morning Bowling, what's your plan to die??

Me: ??? I beg you pardon???

Mother: What are you going to do to die??

Me: Errrrr...

Mother: (Got a bit annoyed) To die is Fry Die.. What are you going to do to die??

Me: Oooohhhh...

xoxo

hahaha.... i love this. There was a book done many years ago called 'Let stork Strine' (Lets talk Australian) and it was written so that all you had to do was read the words exactly as written and it would make you speak like a real australian.

For example...

gunga din (cant get in)

egg nish ner (air conditioner)

air garn (how are you going? means how are you?)

hem neggs (ham and eggs)

That's funny , reminded when I first visited Thailand .

I was eating in the hotel where I was staying ;

waitress #1:aloi mai ( allo mate )

me : hi how are you ? ( oh she knows I'm Australian and making an effort )

waitress #2 : aloi mai ( allo mate )

me : yeh gidday ( nodding my head and thinking the staff here are very friendly )

waitress #2 : ka ( takes the fork and tries the green curry chicken I was eating )

me just smiling :P

Marc, it is not for a movie. I posted this a week or 2 ago; it is actaually just an advert for Oz, although a very cinematic Luhrmann directed one!!

If I had to live in an English speaking country, Australia'd be my first choice.

(Wales being second.)

They don't speak English....they speak Australian....there are more than subtle differences......and you need a criminal conviction to get in.....fare lick of the sav mate!!!

That's actually English that they speak?!

Used to live in Swansea (for my sins) and the first 6 months I was there got very confused that all the roadside services had the same name - then I realised all the signs were bi-lingual!! Idiot!
