Can anyone teach me more Thai?

Meet educated women who speak good English and is willing to learn of western culture, the problem solves.

Well, this may be the solution for a native english speaker, but what about people that aren't?

My english is far from fluent (even if it still be much better than my thai) but I would hardly find a thai girl that speak my mother language... so a relationship where both can never express ideas and feelings in their own mother tongue would be frustrating after a while, or at least that's my impression.

My interest in learning thai started the first time I have visited the country... I grew up in a country where we have to learn 4 languages in school and it was the first time of my life I was visiting a country where I couldn't understand what local people were speaking about, and that was frustrating.

Then a friend of mine who was living there took me to visit the country side and there I was lost... everything was amaisingly beautifull and peacefull, but there was no way I could have a conversation or even an information from the people living there.

It was then that I decided that I would have visted Thailand again but with at least a basic understanding of the language.

I know, as other mentioned if a guy speaks thai he will be looked with suspect from thai girls... it happened to me many times, and I bet it happend even on this site when I write something in thai, but I don't really care that much.

If a person judge other people only for some commonplace and is not opened enough to try to really know who I am, then I have no interest in having any kind of relationship with that person.

As for learning from watching Thai news, find it a bit hard when you just don't know what the words mean. Thai TV with English subtitles is worth gold though, i tend to pick up a lot when listening and reading at the same time.

I have a pile of Thai DVD's for just that purpose. It's not hard to find ones that have english subtitles.

Hate the game, don't hate the players.

Good luck.

Oh sure, I don't hate the players and even don't hate the game.

I'm just not interessed in playing it with that kind of rules ;)

Subtitles: NO.

If it has subtitles you won't learn as fast. You have to approach a language as a child would. Without translation. Otherwise you will probably never become fluent. It doesn't matter if you understand anything at all, at first. It will come naturally just as is does for a child. If you compare a language to another, it will quickly become tiresome and you won't learn it properly as well. I agree with Riga on many points, along with Neo too.

But sweetbabie is the most correct, I believe. :)

Watching TV or movies with no subtitles is natural but not fast. It takes a child years to learn a language that way, and all the people I know who've learned a language that way took years too. So while it may be the ideal it's not fast, and probably not suitable for people with full time occupations.

Actually I admire it that you are learning Thai. I have friends here that have lived here for 20+ years and don't know more than a few words. I speak 6+ languages, all learned by full exposure. I have 7 years experience with Thai. At first it seems to be almost as difficult as Chinese, Finnish and Hungarian. I don't speak either of those three languages.

Meet thai women (or thai gf) who don't speak to u in English so that you have to learn & understand what she/they speak in thai .

Then the problems solved. (the result depends on your effort & patience ) 8)

Yep :) I think that's the best and most enjoyable way to learn.

That works fine unless you are like Wallace and Grommit, when you find out she doesn't like cheese. :P

As you have already learned some thai (I guess far more than basic in 9 years) what you probably need to improve is a qualified teacher who should be able to evaluate your level of knowledge and suggest you a method to improve your learning process.

The problem here is to choose the method that works for you. I've seen differents approaches from differents schools and teacher, and all of them works for some people and not for others.

You know yourself, so you should contact different teachers and schools and they should let you know their teaching methods and which books and materials they work with, then you can choose the one you think suits more your way of learning

There was a Thai lady on here a while back that was a Thai language teacher, and was offering lessons. I can't remember her name, but someone else might.

Or try the Job Offers and Small Goods forum. Might be something in there.

I believe Funky House refers to Faycyber, Check her profile as she mentions teaching Thai.

True, i have looked into the 'Walen School of Thai' online, i find their "repeat-repeat-repeat"- method interesting, maybe worth looking into in the future.

Do you want to learn Thai for general purposes or to meet girls?

Because if you try to use it to meet girls, it's nowhere near as attractive as the simple lack of communication. And knowing Thai will make you less attractive to girls that are looking for a real boyfriend, because it will make you look like you have a bit too much experience. (Just a tip). :)

It's cute, once you speak Thai, you learn about the culture, but It has pros and cons. Speak fluent Thai meaning you are well experienced a.k.a. ⪡⪹ = been through a lot and possibly with a lot of Thai women, that's not a good thing. Speaking Thai, knowing Thai then You become somewhat a sold out.

Mmmmmhhh wait! I found something interesting.

It seems that if you speak too much Thai it will not make you look like you have too much experience... You will look like you have not enough money :lol:

Although I am one of the afore mentioned 'TF Farang Idiots' who deserves to be screwed over as much as possible, I agree with this point.

However, there is a balance.

In my 4+ years in Thailand, I have had Girlfriends ranging from a flight attendant who can speak Fluent English, and Girlfriends who can speak NO English whatsoever. Neither is good.

The the first one, she just found it too bloody difficult to take the time and teach me Thai so we only ever spoke in English. The year we were together, I learnt NO Thai whatsoever.

The latter is no good. Yes, all you hear is Thai, but she cannot actually explain to you the meaning of a word or phrase you are unsure of and you can quite often end up saying something you think means one thing which means another. With Thai being an exactl language due to the tones, this is NOT what you want.

So, as far as having a girlfriend, a balance is needed. OR, an even better option would be to find a girlfriend who speaks perfect English and who WILL take the time to sit down and teach you properly.

As for reading and writing, and am 95% self taught. I started by writing all the letters on one side of a small flash card, and the name and sound of the letter on the other side. I carried these cards with me in my pockets wherever I went, and would pull one out at random, look at one side, and try to remember what was on the other side. I had the whole alphabet memorised in about 10 days.

My spelling sucks now, but I can read well enough to be able to have a pretty good conversation in Thai, on msn for example. I have one friend who ALWAYS types in Thai even though she can speak great English (she just likes to help me learn), and it gets better day by day.

A great place to learn individual words once you have learnt the Alphabet is www.thai-language.com

If I had my time again, I would WITHOUT A DOUBT, learn to read and write Thai before I learnt to speak it and I urge anyone learning to do the same.
