Bangkok emissions 'worse than London'

Bangkok Post

Bangkok residents produce as much of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide as New Yorkers, and more than Londoners, a UN-sponsored study has found.

The more carbon dioxide is released, the warmer the climate could become, which could put the city at increased risk of natural disasters, the study said.

The likely consequences for the city, already prone to flooding and land subsidence, will be "severe", according to the Bangkok Assessment Report on Climate Change 2009, released yesterday.

"Land subsidence (sinking), when combined with a rising sea level, could leave Bangkok under 50-100cm of water by 2025," the report said.

"Rising temperatures could also affect the flow of water in the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong rivers."

Both Bangkok and New York emitted 7.1 tonnes of CO2 a head in 2007, the report found.

Bangkok's emissions were higher than those of London's residents, who produced 5.9 tonnes a head.

The transport sector, responsible for almost 38% of CO2 released annually, is the largest contributor, particularly passenger vehicles.

The report was produced by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Bangkok-based Green Leaf Foundation with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Greenhouse gas emissions, such as CO2, are primary contributors of warming temperatures.

The report says a warmer climate in Bangkok could also lead to increased heat-related diseases and the spread of diseases such as dengue fever. The city must take action to reduce the impact of climate change, said Park Young-Woo, regional director of the UNEP's regional office for Asia and the Pacific.

Options for making Bangkok a "climate-proofing" city include improving the public health infrastructure and disease surveillance and prevention programmes, creating early warning systems for extreme weather events, and implementing stricter zoning and building codes to minimise damage from storms and rises in sea levels.

New York City's per capita income in 2000 was $22,402; men and women had a median income of $37,435 and $32,949 respectively.

GDP New York City USD $ 1133 Billion

GDP Bangkok USD $ 89 Billion

New York City has a GDP more than 100 greater than Bangkok, yet the Carbon Footprint per head is the same for Bangkok and New York City.

More trains.

They say they're workin on it...

When looking at property here, we took into account the areas of Bangkok that are supposed to be underwater in 20...definitely cuts out all the prime areas of the city. Scary to think about, but 20 years isn't that far off.

One solution they had was to build an entire wall around the city...HAHAHAHAHAAA.

Sorry, had to get that out.

I am working in the sector of sustainable development and my hair would turn grey over night if it was my task to work for a change to a better climate in BKK.

Only a dictatorship with billions of Baht behind would be able to make such a change within a reasonable period of time.

You cant change in ten years what has been neglected or ignored for so long.

Damn right more trains in BKK!!!

The BTS Silom line ext to Wong Wian Wai has taken 10 yrs to build! All for 2.2km exst (2 stations) which was originally due to open in Dec 04! Thankfully, the BMA took over this project but still it will finally open 2 yrs late on 15 May!

The On Nut- Bearing ext was orignally planned to be completed a few years ago but will open early next year. (Again the BMA took it over to get it done). The ext to Samut Prakan is planned to be done in 3-4 yrs.

The BTS Mo-Chit to Saphan Mai was originally a priority that was planned ot be done by BTS by the mid 2000s but we have still yet to see a tender.

The MRT Blue Line ext to Bang Khae, and Circle Line, is going nowhere even though the Blue Line has been operating for some 5 years.

Good news is that the SRT Red Line, Bang Sue to Taling Chan, has started construction (it was originally due to be finished in 2008). The Rangsit Red Line will be awarded later this year and finsihed in 5 yrs (originally 2010). The wouthern section to Rama II and Mahachai is maybe 10 years away.

Half of the truncated Purple Line (only a 1/3 of it is being built now) has been awarded but no construction yet (It was originally planned to be completed in 2009). The Purple line is a big gravy train of kickbacks for PPP/PT/Newin pollies who have land deal interests (hence the current Transport Minister being a Newin man).

And the Airport Line will finally open on 5 Aug, offfically, but more realistically on 5 Dec as the SRT has yet to appoint an operator! (The original completion date was Dec 06).

All of the TRT plans from the 2005 election which would have been completed by 2009 (Orange, Purple, Blue and BTS exts) were never prioritised. Though most of the plans were subsequently adopted by the Coup govt, the Samak govt (he stupidly and infamously said it would all be done in 2 yrs) and the current coalition govt all plans progress at the pace of Thai Police anti-corruption campaign!

But everyone in BKK seems to accepts these delays because *** and all accept such poor planning and bad project management is the norm in Bangkok!

Although everyone complains about the traffic and air quality no one seems prepared to publically question why the Transport bureaucracy and pollies who never actually catch public transport don't get their act together.

I'll be a grandfather before I can get around this city quickly and efficently on a metro system.

Whew! Got that off my chest.... :D

(Happy to post a map of the planned lines if anyone wishes.)
