Car Bomb found in Times Square

New York City police have defused an improvised car bomb parked in Times Square, one of the city's busiest tourist areas, officials say.

They say propane tanks, fireworks, petrol, and a clock device were removed from a parked sports utility vehicle.

Part of the district - where many theatres are sited - was sealed off.

Both US President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg praised the quick response by the New York Police Department.

"We are very lucky," Mr Bloomberg told reporters. "Thanks to alert New Yorkers and professional police officers, we avoided what could have been a very deadly event."

He said the bomb "looked amateurish" but could have exploded, adding that the incident was a "reminder of the dangers that we face".

Correspondents say the New York City Police Department is on constant alert after a series of alleged terror plots in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

"The NYPD bomb squad has rendered safe an improvised car bomb," said New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

The alert was triggered when a street vendor saw smoke coming from a Nissan Pathfinder parked on 45th Street and Seventh Avenue at about 1830 (2230 GMT) on Saturday.

The vehicle had its engine running and hazard lights flashing, officials said.

Police shut down several blocks of Times Square, as well as subway lines, while a robotic arm broke windows of the vehicle.

Jerry Brown, one of the tourists evacuated from the nearby Marriott Marquis hotel, told the BBC: "Guests are sitting on the street and there is considerable chaos... There is talk about moving us to another hotel but I am not sure how this is going to happen."

The White House said President Obama was being kept up to date on the investigation.

A 90-year-old woman from West Yorkshire has amazed her fellow golfers by hitting a hole in one.

Mary Tattersall made the 181yd (165m) shot on the second hole at Shay Grange Golf Centre in Heaton near Bradford.

The pensioner, who has only been playing golf for two years, said she felt amazed and stunned to have achieved the feat.

She was given a special trophy by the club to mark her success on the par three hole.

'Amazing woman'

"I was going around with friends and on the second tee off was amazed to find that I couldn't find my ball and it was in the hole," Ms Tattersall said.

"I was quite amazed really, and stunned, and so were my fellow golfers at the same moment."

Ms Tattersall was 88 when she took up golf to get some exercise and make new friends.

Jordan Gibson, owner of Shay Grange, said she was a natural at the sport.

He said: "It's very rare to get a hole in one. Mary is a real natural with excellent hand and eye co-ordination. She loves golf and plays in all weathers.

"She is an amazing woman, when you see her getting in and out of her car I always feel I should go and help her, but she just jumps out, swings her clubs on her back and she's away."

Ms Tattersall said: "I'm not a competitive person, I only come up to the Shay because it's a very good exercise, better than going to the gym."

Spammo, get some facts straight. The Swat Valley is in Pakistan and is the geographical location of more US plane strikes than any other location in the world in the last few years. War wasn't officially declared due to politics and the US armoes iunability to deal with small gurilla groups in Iraq and the Big stan, but it's on you fool. I'll take back that I tried to lead that it is a full on declaration situation.

A Hells Angel who was shot dead in a gunfight has gone for one last ride on his beloved Honda - his destination beyond the grave.

Friends helped Puerto Rican David Morales Colon from San Juan David Morales Colon fulfil his last wish - to be buried with his bike - after the 22-year-old lost his life in a shootout last week.

Funeral directors embalmed the body, dressed him in jeans, shoes, a jacket and a hat and put sunglasses on him to cover his eyes.

They then used hidden supports to put the corpse on the bike for the wake - with his hand gunning the throttle and body crouched over the fuel tank, to mimic his stance when riding at speed.

Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album was played at the funeral.

His uncle Jose Torres said: "He went out as he wanted."

A video of Mr Colon, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on his bike has become a viral web hit, with nearly 1.5m people clicking on the bizarre sight.

Asian men and BNP candidate Bob Bailey clash in Barking

A fight broke out between a British National Party parliamentary candidate and some Asian men as party members were out campaigning in east London.

Some men earlier swore at leader Nick Griffin and threw fruit at him and he was taken away from the scene.

The candidate for Romford, Bob Bailey, was filmed shouting out to men in Ripple Road when one of them swore and spat at him and Mr Bailey punched him.

Police were called after 1500 BST to the fight between the two groups.

'Campaign of hatred'

At the time Metropolitan Police said they were called to the incident but no-one had been arrested at the scene.

Later however, police said an 18-year-old man attended Barking police station and alleged common assault against another man.

The Barking Community Safety Unit is to look into the matter.

When asked about the fight Mr Griffin told BBC London the fight was the result of a "campaign of hatred and dehumanisation against any group of people, in this case us".

He said: "I think people have to realise that the people have spoken, this is a democratic vote and everyone has to go along with that, whether it's us, our opponents or people on the streets, and if there are a few crazies or thugs on the streets I'm sure the police will deal with them quite quickly.

"The more people in the media talk this up as an issue, the more silly kids on the streets will be inclined to take the law into their hands."

So the Marin Funeral Home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, organised for Colon's body to be dressed in biking gear and placed on top of his Honda CBR600 while friends and families paid their respects.

After being embalmed, Colon's corpse was kitted out with blue jeans and a riding jacket, sunglasses, and a black baseball cap. He was posed leaning forward on the bike, as if he was riding at speed down a long, straight stretch of road.

The result is surprisingly life-like.

During the wake, young children took photographs of Colon and his bike, according to reports.

"He loved his motorcycle. It made him feel free from his worries," one mourner said. "We all know he will be happy riding for eternity."

Before he was murdered earlier this month, 22-year-old David Morales Colon had told his family that he didn't want a traditional casket.

So the Marin Funeral Home in San Juan, Puerto Rico, organised for Colon's body to be dressed in biking gear and placed on top of his Honda CBR600 while friends and families paid their respects.

After being embalmed, Colon's corpse was kitted out with blue jeans and a riding jacket, sunglasses, and a black baseball cap. He was posed leaning forward on the bike, as if he was riding at speed down a long, straight stretch of road.

The result is surprisingly life-like.

During the wake, young children took photographs of Colon and his bike, according to reports.

"He loved his motorcycle. It made him feel free from his worries," one mourner said. "We all know he will be happy riding for eternity."

Court upholds jail term for 'slave' boss Bangkok Post 7/05/2010

The Court of Appeal has upheld a conviction against a Bangkok businesswoman sentenced to jail for keeping a girl from Buri Ram as a slave. The girl's lawyer has hailed the decision as giving hope for better enforcement of the little-used anti-slavery law.

The court yesterday upheld a 2007 decision by the Criminal Court to sentence Wipaporn Songmeesap, a 53-year-old businesswoman, to 12-and-a-half years in jail. She was also told to pay 200,000 baht in compensation to the girl, whose name was withheld. Siriwan Vongkietpaisan, a human rights expert and the girl's lawyer, said the verdict sends a message to employers that they should treat their staff fairly.

"The anti-slavery law was enacted in 1956. Yet until this case was lodged, no prosecution or lawsuit had been filed under it," Ms Siriwan said. "Some believe slavery no longer exists, so police do not know how to deal with crimes of this nature. "But the verdict in this case will give an example of how the law works, and how anti-slavery provisions can be breached.

The law punishes people who keep others in "slave-like conditions", though their victims do not have to be kept in chains for the law to apply. The maximum penalty is seven years in jail, but for those keeping children under 15 in such conditions, the maximum sentence is doubled - as it was in this case.

In 2006, the girl's family sued Wipaporn for inflicting severe physical harm on the girl. The girl, who was 14 at the time, worked as Wipaporn's maid at her Bangkok home from December 2003 to December 2004. She was forced to work from 4.30am to midnight and had to eat leftover rice with chilli powder, or food left over by Wipaporn's family. She rarely received her 2,000 baht monthly pay.

The court was told the girl was hit repeatedly with a wooden chair, belts and metal rods to the head, chest, back and knees. The girl suffered severe head and body wounds. Wipaporn sent the maid to a hospital in Buri Ram in December 2004 after the girl collapsed.

Doctors had to drain blood from her back to save her life. Her employer claimed the girl was in an accident. Wipaporn was bailed after sentencing and refused to talk to the media.

Sorry to harp on, but this story is really niggling me.

It's so reminiscent of past events where people have dehumanised other people to free themselves of any moral or ethical constraints about how they treat others.

Once someone has convinced themselves or has been convinced by others that other people aren't really people, then they have carte blanche to do whatever they wish. Such people would treat animals better.

Absolutely nothing could be as horrible than this. I'm utterly disgusted with the "woman".

This abhorence of a human being should be made an example of to bring people to their seemingly lost senses.
