Gary Glitter sues to protect his reputation...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-14185807

Gary Glitter complaint dismissed by Ofcom

Media watchdog Ofcom has dismissed a complaint from Gary Glitter about a 2009 TV drama that imagined the glam rocker being executed for child rape.

Glitter - real name Paul Gadd - said Channel 4's The Execution of Gary Glitter had treated him unfairly.

Viewers might have concluded he had committed "terrible" crimes that had gone unpunished, he complained.

But Ofcom said it was clear the drama was fictional and Glitter had a well-known history of child sex offences.

In November 1999 the disgraced glam rocker was sentenced to four months in a UK prison for possessing images of child sex abuse.

In March 2006 he was convicted for the sexual abuse of two Vietnamese girls and served almost three years in prison in Vietnam.

In his complaint Glitter said he had never been prosecuted in Vietnam for child rape.

But Ofcom concluded that in view of Glitter's "well-known reputation in relation to child sex offences", there was "little scope for additional damage to his reputation". (lmao!)

The regulator noted that the drama did include real facts and said it might not have been clear where fact and fiction overlapped.

But it found the programme as a whole was clearly fictional, including the scenes where the charge of child rape was first raised.

Channel 4, it added, had signposted the fact the drama was set in a fictional Britain that had the death penalty in several ways.

The committee concluded that, as there was no unfairness to Glitter in the programme, the complaint of unfair treatment would not be upheld.

Poll: Majority accept corruption in govt

Published: 20/07/2011 at 03:35 PM

Online news:

The majority of Thai people say a corrupt government is acceptable to them if, in being dishonest, it can also bring prosperity to the people and to the country, according to the results of an Abac Poll released on Wednesday.

The pollsters questioned 2,559 people in 17 provinces throughout the country about what they expect from the incoming government.

Asked about their attitude toward corruption, a clear majority (64.5 per cent) of respondents said a corrupt government is acceptable, just so long as it can make the country prosperous and they too stand to benefit from it. Only 35.5 per cent said was unacceptable.

Those who voiced no objection to corrupt practices included: 71 per cent of respondents under 20 years of age, 71 per cent of those with an average income of over 20,000 baht per month, 72.3 per cent of students, 67 per cent of operators of private businesses, 64.9 per cent of employees of private companies, 56.4 per cent of farmers and workers, and 50.9 per cent of govenrment officials and state enterprise workers.

At a more educated level, a corrupt government with a satisfactory performance was acceptable to 66.7 per cent of those below a bachelor's degree level and to 58.4 per cent of those with a bachelor's degree or higher education.

People opposed to corruption were mostly over 50 years of age and earning less than 5,000 baht a month.

Abac Poll director Noppadon Kannikar said the results revealed a very dangerous attitude which was an obstacle to the country's development and a reflection that, for most people, self-interest comes before the country.

It was alarming that several previous polls by Abac had showed similar outcomes, he said.

Mexican boy beheaded and disembowelled four men

New details have emerged about a teenage boy who confessed to beheading and then disembowelling at least four men in the Mexican resort of Cuernavaca.

Edgar Jimenez Lugo has gone on trial accused of working as a hitman for one of the country's most notorious drug cartels.

The teenager, who is known by the nickname 'El Ponchis' (the cloak), was taken into custody in December, shortly after the mutilated corpses of his alleged victims were found hanging from local bridges. He was 14 years old at the time of his arrest.

Prosecutors now believe that the boy was first recruited by the Beltran Leyva organisation, which controls much of central Mexico, at the age of 11. He turned 15 in May, and is now facing charges of murder, kidnapping, drug-dealing, and the possession of illegal weapons. The trial is taking place behind closed doors because of the defendant's age. It has sparked widespread soul-searching over the so-called "war on drugs", declared by Mexican President Felipe Calderon in 2006.

More than 35,000 people have since died in drug-related violence, including roughly 1,500 children and teenagers. Around 4,000 juveniles have been detained by authorities. Jimenez faces around three years in prison under policies designed to rehabilitate young offenders.

Born in San Diego, to illegal immigrant parents who were also crack cocaine addicts, Jimenez is officially an American citizen. However, he spent most of his childhood in a working class suburb of Cuernavaca, a popular weekend retreat a couple of hours south of Mexico City. When he was 11 years old, he allegedly began working for Julio de Jesus Radilla Hernandez, a representative of the Beltran Leyva cartel widely known as 'El *****'.

In December police, acting on a tip-off, arrested Mr Jimenez and two of his sisters as they prepared to board a flight to San Diego, where their mother still lives. The youth was then paraded before television cameras and claimed responsibility for having slit the throats of the four men, while under the influence of marijuana.

Counterfeit Apple Stores Popping up in China

Update: Wired.co.uk has independently confirmed this to be an unauthorised Apple Store.

Chinese counterfeiters have a long history of cloning hardware from major tech manufacturers, but now they’re going a step further by cloning entire stores.

A US blogger living in Kunming in Southwest China noticed what appeared to be an Apple store pop up in her town, complete with the store’s trademark spacious, airy interior, blue-shirted staff, products to play with, and upstairs seating area.

“We proceeded to place a bet on whether or not this was a genuine Apple store or just the best rip-off we had ever seen,†said the blogger, who hasn’t disclosed her identity but goes under the pseudonym BirdAbroad. It turned out to be the latter — a quick glance at Apple’s website shows that there are only stores in Beijing and Shanghai in China.

Even more curiously, the staff believed they genuinely were working for Apple. “I tried to imagine the training that they went to when they were hired,†says the blogger, “in which they were pitched some big speech about how they were working for this innovative, global company — when really they’re just filling the pockets of some shyster living in a prefab mansion outside the city by standing around a fake store disinterestedly selling what may or may not be actual Apple products that fell off the back of a truck somewhere.â€

Teacher shot in face as students brawl

Teen dies, police raid bus in latest violence

Published: 22/07/2011 at 12:00 AM

Newspaper section: News

A teacher was shot in the face as he tried to stop a brawl among 50 vocational students yesterday morning at a crowded bus stop in Nonthaburi, police said.

Wichian Patchakhiao of the Army Transportation Engineering School sustained a wound below his eye after a student fired a pen gun, a single-shot weapon, during a clash between students from two schools. Police said 17 students from Phraramhok Technology School and Nakornluang Polytechnic College were arrested at the scene of the clash in front of Karun Sueksa School in Muang district. The pen gun attacker escaped.

Police seized 21 knives, an axe and a home-made ping pong bomb.

Nonthaburi police chief Surachai Suepsuk said the current punishment for student brawls, fining those in possession of weapons 100 baht each and informing their schools and parents, was not enough to curb student violence.

In a separate incident, a Phraramhok Technology School student was shot dead and his four friends, including a girl, were injured by a gunman near the Rama VII bridge in the early hours yesterday.

Patiphong Bunthot, 18, died as his friends were trying to flag down a taxi to take him and their injured friends to a nearby hospital.

The group of nine teens was attacked by one of two men on a motorcycle as they were eating and drinking at a food stall they regularly frequent.

In related news, late Wednesday night police stopped a No. 101 bus near the Dao Khanong area after they were informed the bus had been "hijacked" by vocational students. Fourteen male and six female students appeared frightened when the officers raided the bus. An inspection found knives in some of the students' bags.

"If I didn't carry a knife, I would be dead," one of the girls told the police.

The students are from Krungthon Technology School. They got on the bus on Phetkasem Road and told the driver to switch off the headlights as he was driving to Taksin Road, according to police.

The students claimed they wanted the lights off to avoid being targeted by students from rival schools, which would endanger other passengers on the bus, according to police.

Man tries to kill mum w/ Plane

"Are you home mum? I'm just about to drop in."

Those words Konrad Schmidt said over the phone to his mother, Rosemary Schmidt, Sunday were possibly the last ones he ever said. He was calling from the cockpit of a twin-engine small airplane, which he flew into the window of her first-floor bedroom, killing himself, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported.

Rosemary Schmidt survived what police characterized as an attack on the house in Oberhallau, Switzerland. Konrad Schmidt, a qualified pilot, had been feuding with his mother for a long time after his parents' marriage ended, which was followed by his father's death from cancer, the police told The Telegraph.

Konrad Schmidt suffered from depression and also had financial problems, the police said.

The mother's neighbors told the Swiss newspaper Blick that the 47-year-old man flew past the house three times as though he was practicing for his final descent, The Telegraph reported.

Blick quoted one neighbor saying, "It was like seeing a mini rerun of 9/11."

I get the horn from Thai hookers....

Thai hookers paid to smuggle S.African rhino horns: reports

JOHANNESBURG, July 22, 2011 (AFP) - A Thai man hired prostitutes to smuggle poached rhino horns disguised as legal hunting trophies from South Africa to supply the Asian black market, media said Friday.

Chumlong Lemtongthai, 43, who was arrested last week outside Johannesburg, was part of a syndicate alleged to have sold at least 40 rhino horns, the weekly Mail & Guardian and the daily Beeld reported.

The revelation came from a South African manager for Thai Airways, John Oliviers, who worked with Chumlong but then turned whistle-blower and informed the police, the papers said.

Olivier told police that Marnus Steyl, a South African wildlife trader, bought rhinos from auctions and private owners and took them to his farms where the animals were killed soon after their arrival, the paper said.

"Once the rhinos were established on Steyl's farm, he would call Lemtongthai and tell him how many animals were in place for a 'hunt'," read Olivier's statement, according to the Mail & Guardian.

South Africa allows a limited number of legal rhino hunts, but each person is allowed only one kill per year.

Friends, strippers and prostitutes were paid 5,000 rands ($740, 514 euros) to pose as hunters and export the horns, the papers said.

Each horn was taken to a taxidermist, who mounted it on a shield to look like a hunting trophy.

"The trophy is just a cover for getting the horn out of South Africa and into Asia. Once in Asia, it obviously would enter the black market as rhino horn for 'medicinal purposes'. The person allegedly 'hunting' the rhino would never see the animal or its horn again," Olivier's statement reportedly said.

Chumlong paid 65,000 rands a kilo for the horns and sold them for $55,000 (380,000 rands) a kilo, the papers said.

With the average horn weighing five kilos, he made more than $8.9 million in profit on the 40 rhinos shot to date, they said.

South African national parks officials say rhino poaching has risen from 13 cases in 2007 to a record 333 last year and 222 so far this year.

Ulster Unionist Party leader Tom Elliott has welcomed the removal of a T-shirt from Sinn Fein’s online shop depicting people celebrating the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

The former prime minister has been the target of animosity in republican circles since the IRA hunger strikes in 1981.

LadyThatcher, nicknamed "The Iron Lady", refused political concession to the republican inmates.

Not really WTF... More quelle surprise...

Singer Amy Winehouse, 27, has been found dead at her north London home.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that a 27-year-old woman had died in Camden and that the cause of death was as yet unexplained.

London Ambulance Service said it had been called to the flat at 1554 BST and sent two vehicles but the woman died.

The troubled singer had a long battle with drink and drugs which overshadowed her recent musical career. She pulled out of a comeback tour last month.

Last month, the north Londoner pulled out of the European tour after she was jeered at the first gig in Serbia for appearing too drunk to perform. For 90 minutes, she mumbled through parts of songs and at times left the stage - leaving her band to fill in.

Winehouse had won widespread acclaim, aged 20, with her 2003 debut album, Frank.

But it was 2006's Back to Black which brought her worldwide stardom, winning five Grammy Awards.

Rumours of Winehouse's death began circulating on Twitter on Saturday evening. Among those to comment was former prime minister's wife Sarah Brown.

"Sad sad news of Amy Winehouse - great talent, extraordinary voice, and tragic death, condolences to her family," she tweeted.

Singer and presenter Myleene Klass tweeted: "OMG. Amy Winehouse. Exceptional talent and really nice lady. RIP."

BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton wrote: "Can not believe the news. Amy was a special girl. The saddest news."

Daily Telegraph rock critic Neil McCormick said he was "utterly shocked" at her death.

Last appearance He said she had appeared focused when giving an "incredible performance" for a recent studio recording of a duet with Tony Bennett.

"It's deeply sad. It's the most completely tragic waste of talent that I can remember," he added.

The troubled singer made her last public appearance on Wednesday night when she joined her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield on stage at The Roundhouse in Camden.

The singer danced with Bromfield and encouraged the audience to buy her album in the impromptu appearance before leaving the stage.

At the time she pulled out of the tour, her spokesman had said everyone wanted to do everything to "help her return to her best".
