PHUKET: -- A couple who moved into their new Phuket home in a quiet neighborhood yesterday have already reported their house being burgled – and losing valuables totaling about one million baht in the process.

They had not spent a single night in their new home before they were robbed.

Lars Gustav Torsten Lindgren, 57, told the Phuket Gazette today that he and his 35-year-old Thai girlfriend bought their new home, located in Chalong's sleepy Soi Baan Klang, off Chao Fa West Rd, just two days ago.

“We spent Wednesday night next door and we left the house to get some food at about 5pm yesterday,” said his girlfriend.

“We came home about an hour later and found a wooden stick lying at the front door. Lars unlocked the security door and rushed inside to find his bag was missing,” she added.

Gone with the bag were a gold necklace, a gold bracelet, three gold rings, a mobile phone and Mr Lindgren’s passport.

The mosquito screen on the security door was broken open.

The couple believe the thief used the stick to break through the mesh and reach through the door to retrieve the bag, which was sitting on a counter just a few meters from the door.

They also found that the girlfriend’s handbag, which was sitting beside a window, had been emptied of her ATM and credit cards, some “important documents” and cash, and her bank book.

The mosquito screen on the window, which had security bars, had also been broken open.

“I’ve been in Phuket three times and I really like it, so I bought this house,” said a downhearted Mr Lundgren.

The couple transferred the money – 10 million baht – to buy the property on Wednesday.

“The house is very nice and quiet; that’s why we chose it, but somebody was probably watching us. It’s just bad luck,” he said.

“I lived in Australia for 32 years and I was supposed to run a property business in Phuket as I used to work in real estate, but now I have to stay in the house for awhile to organize everything as we will sell this house,” Mr Lundgren said.

The couple now plan to move to Bangkok.

“He sold everything in Australia to move here. Now we’ve lost heart and we’re planning to move. I quit my job in Bangkok. Now I have to go back and ask for my old job back,” she said.

Mr Lindgren said he had not had time to take out home and contents insurance.

Chalong Police are continuing their investigation into the robbery and the embassy has been notified of the passport loss.

Next-door neighbor Sujintana Roll, 49, told the Phuket Gazette, “My house used to get broken into, but that was many years ago. This area hasn’t had any robberies since.”

Blind man sued for illegally downloading porn he can’t watch  - Geek.com story link

California porn studio Imperial Enterprises, Inc. is suing 3,500 people for illegally downloading the company’s pornographic content. However, one of the defendants claims there’s no way he would have downloaded the illegal snuff. So what’s his proof? Imperial Enterprises has his IP address, which is reason enough to believe that he downloaded the porn, right? John Doe, as he has chosen to be named, is actually blind.

Though some of you may be thinking “maybe he downloaded it to have something to listen to;†Doe claims he has been falsely accused. The legally blind man said he was too busy to password-protect his WiFi connection, which resulted in someone else getting on his network and downloading the porn, entitled “Tokyo Cougar Creampies.â€

Doe told the Seattle Weekly that the whole thing was a little ridiculous as his movie-watching ability is nonexistent. He said his kids watch movies, but they’re 4 and 6, “so they don’t watch porn either. Well, hopefully they don’t.â€

Unfortunately, Doe will likely have to settle since he doesn’t have the money to afford a lawyer to counter the lawsuit, nor does he have the money to pay if he loses the lawsuit. Going in front of the judge would cost thousands of dollars, and it would cost hundreds of thousands if he lost the case.

So if neither Doe, his wife, nor his two small children downloaded the porn, who did? The Does apparently live in a densely populated area, which means there’s a lot of people in close proximity that are able to hack or just connect to Doe’s WiFi.

We’ve seen this happen time and time again, and this is certainly a wakeup call to protect your WiFi password. The big companies will not take pity on who they sue. If they have your IP address and they have proof of something being illegally downloaded from your address, that’s all they need to bring you to court. Back in April we told you about one man who was arrested by seven armed officers for allegedly downloading kiddie porn. Of course, it was another case of an open WiFi network that some other guy was piggybacking off of.

The moral of the story (once again) is to password-protect your WiFi network

Thailand to shed 'sex tourism' tag soon

Arguably called the sex tourism capital of the world, Thailand is now deliberately using the family tourism label to shed the sex destination tag, a Thai diplomat said here Friday.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event organised in Panaji to promote Thailand as a tourism destination, Tomwit Jarnson, the Thai consul general in Mumbai, said family tourism would eventually edge Thailand away from the slur of 'sex tourism' in the years to come.

"We are trying to project Thailand as a family tourism destination. We are slowly changing the perception of Thailand to the rest of the world," Jarnson said.

Jarnson said the Thai food and dance festival in Goa, in association with the Vivanta by Taj hotels and resorts, was just such an attempt to project Thailand as a place steeped in culture, which is quite similar to the culture of the Indian sub-continent and tradition and a rich and diverse culinary palette.

"Destination Thailand is an annual event organised by us which helps us reach out to the people of India through our food, music and dance. We are very happy to have the festival in Goa this year where the people of this city will experience the unique characteristics and rich cultural heritage which our country has to offer," he said.

"We are slowly developing facilities in Thailand which will attract family tourism. We have a lot of Indian families who travel to Thailand," Jarnson said.

He further said that the Thailand tourism authorities were trying to project Phuket - which, along with Bangkok and Pattaya, is regarded as the prime sex tourism area in Thailand - as a family tourism destination.

Although banned by law, prostitution is common place in the tourism districts of Thailand, which nearly 14 million tourists visit annually -- a large chunk of these are single males or male groups of tourists seeking sex or sex-oriented fun.

A recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report has pegged the number of female prostitutes in the country at 2 lakh.

I'll get me coat

Not because I need Thai hookers, but if the country is full of Indian families...!

Man goes in for circumcision, ends up getting his penis amputated...and sues his "KY doctor."

"SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The dispute between a Kentucky man and a surgeon over the necessity of amputating the patient's penis during surgery in 2008 is set to go to trial this week.

The doctor maintains he found cancer in the man's penis during surgery and that it had to be removed, according to the physician's attorney. The patient claims the surgery was supposed to be a circumcision and he never authorized the amputation, nor was he given a chance to seek a second opinion.

Jury selection begins Thursday in the lawsuit brought by Phillip Seaton of Waddy and his wife, Deborah, against Dr. John Patterson of Louisville. Attorneys hope to start opening statements that afternoon.

The Seatons sued Patterson in Shelby County Circuit Court in 2008 after an operation that resulted in the amputation.

Seaton, now in his 60s, was having the procedure on Oct. 19, 2007, to better treat inflammation.

Neither Kevin George, the attorney for the Seatons, nor Clay Robinson, the attorney for Patterson, would comment on the case. George said Shelby Circuit Judge Charles Hickman asked the lawyers to refrain from making public statements. Robinson did not respond to phone and email messages left at his office in recent weeks.

The lawsuit alleges Patterson removed Seaton's penis without consulting either Phillip or Deborah Seaton.

George said during a pre-trial hearing on Aug. 2 that the case comes down to whether jurors believe the amputation "was a necessary part of the surgery.'

"This is really a fact-driven case," Shelby Circuit Judge Charles Hickman said during the pre-trial conference.

George has said that the doctor's post-surgical notes show Patterson thought he detected cancer and removed the penis. But, George added, the situation was not an emergency.

"It didn't have to happen that way," George said in 2008, shortly after the lawsuit was filed.

Robinson has previously said that Patterson, a Kentucky-based urologist, had permission to perform any medical procedure deemed necessary and that the doctor found cancer in the organ during the surgery. Robinson has said that Patterson "had no reasonable option" but to remove the cancer.

"Mr. Seaton's problem was not the surgery, it was the cancer," Robinson said in 2008.

The trial had initially been set for January, but Hickman delayed the proceedings because of pre-trial publicity.

"I'm optimistic we can seat this jury," Robinson said during the pre-trial hearing.

The Seatons are seeking unspecified damages from Patterson for "loss of service, love and affection."

The Seatons also sued Jewish Hospital, where the surgery took place. The hospital settled with the Seatons for an undisclosed amount.

The Seatons' suit is similar to one in which an Indianapolis man was awarded more than $2.3 million in damages after he claimed his penis and left testicle were removed without his consent during surgery for an infection in 1997."

Ouch!! Really makes me want to gerd my loins... :)

7 of Thailand's strangest magazines

Locally produced mags cover almost every niche you can think of: And some you probably haven't

A glance along the shelves of any Thai bookshop is an experience in itself. Titles appear and disappear almost weekly, and while there are no official numbers of exactly how many magazines are being published at any one time in Thailand, I’d estimate the number to be close to 800.

There are around 60 licensed Thai language editions of overseas magazines –- and that number has grown by five already this year. The next to appear will be a Thai language version of the global Lonely Planet magazine, which is set to make its debut next month.

But for every high profile overseas invader, there are many more locally produced magazines covering almost every niche you can think of –- and some you probably haven’t.

Here’s a selection of some of the more unusual Thai-language magazines, available on the shelves of bookshops in Bangkok.

1. Lottery Numbers Guide Book

If you need help picking your numbers for the Thai government lottery, grab a copy of the twice-monthly "Lottery Numbers Guide Book."

At just 18 pages it’s small, but at 25 baht it’s also cheap and is probably the most professionally produced of the magazines on this list.

The magazine provides advice on what numbers to choose, looking at a wide variety of weird and wonderful topics including a cat with different coloured eyes, a lucky turtle, the latest film releases and a deformed coconut tree with apparent healthy powers.

Current affairs are also put under the spotlight, and recent helicopter crashes are analysed to produce the lucky numbers 316 and 317 (three helicopter crashes which killed 16 military personnel and one photographer).

2. Buddhist Land

A rough count last weekend indicated there are more than 30 magazines on the shelves devoted to amulets, some of which have made it into 7-Eleven stores around the country -- an indication of their massive popularity and appeal.

Some of the leading titles have even started to develop tablet editions of their print titles, something many mainstream magazines have yet to do.

The monthly "Buddhist Land" is one such publication that falls in this sector. Magazine covers are, in many cases, identical in that they feature images of a selection of amulets.

This magazine sells for 60 baht, and many of its 56 pages contain adverts for ancient and rare amulets.

The fact there are more magazines devoted to amulets than women’s’ lifestyle tells you all you need to know about the popularity, and ultimately the profitability, of these titles.

3. Red-Whiskered Cages

"Red-Whiskered Cages" focuses solely on the art of making cages for the Red-Whiskered Bulbul, a popular songbird in Thailand -- especially in the south.

This monthly magazine, which sells for 120 baht, contains pages of intricate and delicate cages, many of which are antiques.

There’s also a feature looking at the process of using teak and rosewood to create a masterpiece cage from scratch.

A "My Favorite Cage" photo feature, with owners holding their prized possessions, is an obligatory part of this publication. Advertising is limited to just a handful of the 78 pages, so one can only assume the publisher is making decent revenues from single copy sales of this magazine.

4. Lurelover Magazine

A niche magazine if ever there was one, this title is focused almost exclusively on fishing lures.

Priced at 85 baht, there is a decent amount of advertising within "Lurelover's" 92 pages –- indicating the publisher has found and developed the niche very well.

Believe it or not, there are no other magazines devoted purely to lures. The editorial concentrates on fishing trips and what lures were used to catch different species of fish, as well as recently released lures.

There’s even a "Lure of the Month" feature. "Dog Tooth" and "Sexy Impact" are just two of the lures you can learn about in the August edition of this three-year-old title.

5. Fighting Fish

Maintaining the fishy theme is "Fighting Fish" magazine. This 110-page monthly sells for 55 baht and is one of a rare breed of titles whose adverts come close to outnumbering editorial.

Fighting fish are clearly in demand, with prices to match. As well as features on fish and fish people, there are adverts for various potions that are likely must-have liquids for anyone wanting their fish to be an ultimate fighter.

This magazine is also a good example of how advertising is sold as part of the cover. Sometimes it's obvious, but I’ve seen examples that, for the right price, indicate advertisers can buy the cover story of a high profile magazine.

6. The City of Fighting Cocks

There are a lot of amulet magazines, but magazines devoted to the "sport" of cock fighting are equally popular. I’ve counted more than a dozen in one shop alone.

"The City of Fighting Cocks" magazine is one of the more interestingly named, but as with all others it proudly displays a picture of a champion on its August edition cover.

This magazine sells for 50 baht, runs to 96 pages and is well advertised with cocks for sale, stud cocks, cock-fighting equipment and drugs to make your cock the best.

Editorial is not for the squeamish as there are pictures of cock fights, some of which carry prize purses of more than 1 million baht. There’s also the "Man With His Favorite Cock" picture feature.

7. The Police Variety

"The Police Variety" magazine is a relatively new title -- August is issue number 11 of this monthly publication, which aims to inform the public about the good work being done by the Royal Thai Police.

There are features about individual members of the force, the work they do, their hobbies and life outside work, as well as a small amount of advertising from the likes of Marks & Spencer, Air Asia and Toyota.

At first I thought this was a magazine for the police, but it’s actually for the public at large. It’s difficult to know how many copies of this 70 baht, 92-page title are sold, though I suspect it’s not a huge amount.

Licence plate costs a trifling B6.75m

It's taken five auctions, but the Land Transport Department has finally been able to hand over Thailand's most expensive licence number plate.

Department deputy director-general Asathai Ratanadilok na Phuket said four auctions in the past five years had failed to see Sor Sor Bangkok 9999 sold off when the bid winners could not come up with the money to pay for it.

Mr Asathai said the licence plate number was finally sold for 6.75 million baht and the winning bidder had paid over the money.

The department first put the licence plate number up for auction in 2006. At that time, the highest bidder offered 8,111,111 baht but failed to pay up.

Three subsequent auctions of the plate took place in 2008, 2009 and 2010 with highest offers of 4.61 million baht, 5 million baht and 7 million baht respectively. Again the winners failed to pay.

Mr Asathai said the previous bid winners had caused a big problem for the Land Transport Department as it needed the money for its road safety fund.

Under department regulations, the defaulting bid winners are required to pay the difference if the highest bid in the next auction for the plate is lower.

In this case, the winning bidder in the first auction must pay the department 3,501,111 baht and the winning bidder in the fourth auction must pay 250,000.

Mr Asathai said the road safety fund helped people left disabled in road accidents. From February to April this year, 1,854 people with accident disabilities had sought 100 million baht for wheelchairs, prostheses, canes and crutches. The fund has budgeted 70 million baht for medical aids this year, up from 50 million baht last year.

The winning bidders for rare licence plate numbers must pay 10% of the bid on auction day, 40% within 30 days, 30% within the following 90 days and the remaining 20% on the day the licence plate is fitted.

Those who fail to pay up are blacklisted from future auctions. If subsequent auctions produce a higher bid, then their names are deleted from the blacklist. But if subsequent auctions result in lower bids, the blacklisted bidders must pay the difference to get their names removed from the list.

when somebody is TOO ******* extreme/nutty for FOX .... well it's really saying something !!!

Glenn Beck tells Jerusalem: 'Evil is growing. Darkness is falling'

The temperature may have dropped a little in Jerusalem on Wednesday night, but it was more than compensated for by the heat produced by Glenn Beck as he brought his "Restoring Courage" rally to the Old City.

The former Fox News presenter and devout Mormon stood at a podium beneath the gunmetal grey of the dome of the al-Aqsa mosque to direct a tirade of invective at governments, human rights organisations, the United Nations, Europe and Arab states – and sometimes just "them", whoever they are.

Despite a strangely subdued start, the rightwing polemicist finally roused his audience to whoops and cheers after a strangely subdued initial response with his trademark preacher's inflection. But all the while, the distant noise of anti-Beck protests provided a backdrop to a 90-minute programme of declamation, music and presentations.

Dressed as though attending a funeral, Beck stood in sharp contrast to the casual attire of his overwhelmingly white American Christian audience, many of whose baseball caps and T-shirts denoted their state of origin, their church or their adherence to the US Tea Party movement.

But the surprising number of empty seats belied the organisers' claims that demand for tickets had outstripped availability at the 2,000-capacity Davidson Centre.

Beck, who was deemed too extreme even for Fox television after 400 advertisers pulled their commercials from his show earlier this year, had come to Jerusalem to "restore courage" to the Jewish state and salute Israelis as "people who stand against the entire tide of global opinion". "The world is burning," he said. "Whatever we've grown to think is solid and strong and durable is under siege. The threats are mounting. The evil is growing. Darkness is falling."

After many impassioned references to God's covenants to return the Jewish people to their land, Beck turned his attention to what he saw as a legion of enemies that Israel and its God-fearing supporters faced.

Referring to the UN, he said: "In New York, so-called leaders are talking about human rights. But what they do is abuse the very meaning of this phrase. They condemn tiny Israel, democratic Israel, free Israel – Israel which values human life above all others."

He said western governments focused on criticism of Israel instead of condemning countries such as Syria which was "slaughtering its people". "In some countries it is a crime not to condemn Israel. The diplomats are afraid. They are cowards and so they surrender to falsehood. The truth matters not."

Even some Israelis, he said, were beginning to doubt themselves. "My friends, do not lose hope. You must not lose confidence in yourselves. You must draw courage." Always remember, he added, that they were "led to this land by God. He promised that Israel would rise again. We have seen this promise fulfilled. Israel, we have witnessed the dawn of your redemption."

Israel's steadfastness was especially important given "what the world describes as the 'Arab Spring'. I said, are you mad? Behind many of the revolutions is a familiar force which I said would come to the borders of Israel and bring death. And so it has in the past seven days."

The reference was to last week's attack on the Israeli-Egyptian border in which eight Israelis were killed.

Human rights organisations, he said, had become "grotesque parodies of the principles they pretend to represent. They denounce nations like Israel and America and leave alone nations which have no freedoms at all. Whatever moral force they once had is spent."

The audience reserved its most fervent responses and standing ovations for its familiar enemies of big government and liberal institutions. It included representatives of Christian Zionism whose ardent support for Israel is derived from the belief that the Jewish people's return to the holy land is a prerequisite of the second coming of the Messiah.

But the accompanying belief that Jews must then convert to Christianity in order to be saved has prompted widespread opposition to Christian Zionism – and Beck's rally – within Israel. Some rabbis denounced the broadcaster and called on Jews to boycott the event.

From the left, opposition stemmed from Beck's rejection of a Palestinian state on the basis that it would cut off the holy sites of Jerusalem "from the rest of the world".

But protesters were kept well away from the rally, whose venue was itself controversial. The podium, a choir and orchestra, and rows of plastic chairs were sited at an archaeological site below the Temple Mount, revered by Jews, which is also known as Haram al-Sharif, the third holiest site for Muslims. The Muslim call to prayer rose above the al-Aqsa mosque as the audience awaited their hero.

For Bonnie Wimsatt, 59, from Washington DC, part of a group of Christians on a 10-day tour of which the rally was the climax, her reason for the 6,000-mile trip was simple. "We're here to support Israel‚ a peace-loving nation surround by people who want to harm them," she said. "They're always fighting a battle – they can't go outside their front door without someone shooting at them."

At the overflow venue a few miles away, where around 2,000 people gathered to watch the rally on a large outdoor screen, Michael Novatka, a born-again Christian and "self-proclaimed Jew" from Florida, said: "Glenn Beck tells the truth, but the rest of the world doesn't want to hear it. I've been watching him for years, and agree with what he says. Now that he's left Fox, he's stepping it up."

the guy is really a certified looney !!!!

Police own big casino in Bangkok

Published: 25/08/2011 at 02:09 PM

Online news:

The chief of the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) has confirmed MP Chuvit Kamolvisit's claim that senior police officers own a big illegal casino in the heart of Bangkok.

PACC secretary-general Ampol Wongsiri on Thursday confirmed that his staff had found the casino on Ratchadaphisek 18 Road in Bangkok.

He said it was the same gambling den that Rak Thailand list MP Chuvit exposed in parliament on Tuesday. It was was overseen by local police and allowed in only high-stakes gamblers.

Mr Ampol said the casino was moved from Rama IX Road, Bangkok. There were also medium and small gambling dens in apartment buildings on Lat Phrao Road.

He also confirmed Mr Chuvit's remark that illicit drugs were available in toilets of almost all entertainment venues.

Mr Ampol said he questioned Bangkok police chief Pol Lt Gen Jakthip Chaijinda's insistence that Bangkok is free of casinos. He said taxi drivers could comfortably take gamblers to their favourite casinos in Bangkok.

According to a PACC source, senior police officers at two police agencies own the big casino on Ratchadaphisek 18 Road.

There was also an order to close illegal casinos in Bangkok prior to the July 3 general election, intended to force Thai gamblers to visit Thai politicians' casinos in neighbouring countries. Those politicians used their profits to fund their election campaigns, the source said.

Really? LOL

What is it with the Austrians? Do they think imprisoning and impregnating daughters is a future Olympic sport?

New incest case with Fritzl echoes shocks Austrians

_54827157_54822457.jpg Police are investigating the alleged abuse at a house in the village of St Peter am Hart

Police in Austria have arrested a man suspected of imprisoning and sexually abusing his two daughters in his village home over 40 years.

The man, now 80, denies the abuse, which allegedly began when one girl was aged 12 and the other four.

Police say the case was reported in May, when the daughters escaped after one reportedly knocked over the father as he tried to rape her.

Now aged 53 and 45, they were both found to have "mental deficiencies".

Austria's Die Presse newspaper says there are echoes of another Austrian case, that of Jozef Fritzl, who is serving a life sentence for imprisoning and raping his daughter, having fathered seven of children with her.

There was no mention of any children being fathered in the new case.

'Threatened with pitchfork' A social worker found the alleged abuser who had been lying on the floor for two days, incapacitated by his fall.

He received hospital treatment but is said to be mentally alert, and on Thursday he was arrested and moved from a nursing home to prison.

He is suspected of imprisoning, beating and sexually abusing his daughters in the village of St Peter am Hart, near the north Austrian town of Braunau.

Police believe he repeatedly threatened to kill them them with a pitchfork and a stick.

The women were apparently allowed limited contact with the outside world but intimidated into not speaking about their alleged ordeal.

They were kept in the kitchen and made to sleep on a bench.

They are now receiving help from the authorities.

The mother of the house, who died three years ago, was allegedly also abused.

Residents of St Peter am Hart spoke of their shock at the news of the alleged abuse to the Austrian newspaper Krone.

"It is appalling that a person could do such a thing," said one 83-year-old man.

Think this is the first case to be overturned to test the water. Then they will warm up to bringing Toxin back. They will say the most basic reasons like "it wasn't him, that is all" then we are supposed to say "oh, well that clears that up then"

We used to do this joke on Belgians about 15 years ago, but now, we can do it on ourselves, I'm afraid: How many children does the average Austrian have? - Five. Two on the Internet and three in the basement.....

Sad enough, but we are not the only ones, as news all over the world show. Anyhow, if this once might become an Olympic sport, we will be among the top three :(

New body 'liquefaction' unit unveiled in Florida funeral home

By Neil Bowdler Science reporter, BBC News _54556160_resomation_shell-1.jpgClick to play

Resomation founder Sandy Sullivan explains how the machine works

Related Stories

A Glasgow-based company has installed its first commercial "alkaline hydrolysis" unit at a Florida funeral home.

The unit by Resomation Ltd is billed as a green alternative to cremation and works by dissolving the body in heated alkaline water.

The facility has been installed at the Anderson-McQueen funeral home in St Petersburg, and will be used for the first time in the coming weeks. It is hoped other units will follow in the US, Canada and Europe.

The makers claim the process produces a third less greenhouse gas than cremation, uses a seventh of the energy, and allows for the complete separation of dental amalgam for safe disposal.

Mercury from amalgam vaporised in crematoria is blamed for up to 16% of UK airborne mercury emissions, and many UK crematoria are currently fitting mercury filtration systems to meet reduced emission targets.

"Resomation was developed in response to the public's increasing environmental concerns," company founder Sandy Sullivan told BBC News. "It gives them that working third choice, which allows them to express those concerns in a very positive and I think personal way."

_55016469_metal.jpg

The Resomator can dissolve the body tissue in under three hours, say its makers

The installation was only made possible after the state legislature in Florida approved the use of the technology, one of seven US states in which the process has now been legalised.

The system works by submerging the body in a solution of water and potassium hydroxide which is pressurised to 10 atmospheres and heated to 180C for between two-and-a-half and three hours.

Body tissue is dissolved and the liquid poured into the municipal water system. Mr Sullivan, a biochemist by training, says tests have proven the effluent is sterile and contains no DNA, and poses no environmental risk.

The bones are then removed from the unit and processed in a "cremulator", the same machine that is used to crush bone fragments following cremation into ash. Metals including mercury and artificial joints and implants are safely recovered.

The machine is patented in Europe with patents pending in other countries.

Legislative hurdle Alkaline hydrolysis has been used in the past to dispose of medical cadavers and farm animals.

Last year, Aquamation Industries of Australia disposed of several bodies in Queensland using a rival alkaline hydrolysis machine. The same design was also used in Ohio earlier this year to dispose of 19 bodies until a state court shut it down, ruling that the process was not compliant with state law.

Mr Sullivan, whose company is now majority owned by Co-operative Funeralcare, claims his machine will provide a more efficient and quicker process. He also believes the equipment can rival cremation for cost, particularly given the expense of fitting mercury abatement systems.

He is now pressing for legislative changes in the UK to make alkaline hydrolysis a reality in Britain.

"The installations in the US will assist in that process because many of the leaders in the funeral industry are coming to see this unit functioning in the next couple of months once it's running," said Mr Sullivan.

"Once they see the unit running, see the process and how dignified, respectful, quiet and quick it is, they will help to push through legislative change in the UK."
